Support is beingoffered to
Waimakariri’s lifestyle blockowners to
meet their environmental commitments.
The Waimakariri Zone Committee, in
partnership withEnvironment
Canterbury and the Waimakariri
District Council, hasdeveloped a
resourcetosupportthe growing number
of lifestyle blockowners.
The Waimakariri district has more
than 6500lifestyle blocks, which is
thought to be one of the highestnumber
in the country.
Zone committeechairperson
Carolyne Latham saysitwas found
lifestylers oftenfell under the radar,
during the process of developing the
Waimakariri zone implementation plan
in 2018,whichbecame Plan Change 7 to
the Canterbury Landand Water
RegionalPlan.
‘‘We knowthat they want to be doing
theirbit for the environment, but
sometimes it is difficulttoknow where
to start.’’
Collectively, lifestyle blockscould
have asignificant impact on our
environmentasthey typically had more
people and infrastructure on asmaller
land area.
The zone committee’s lifestyle block
working grouphas produced anew
resourcecalled Top Ten Tipsfor
Lifestylers.
‘‘This resource condenses all the
information availableinto the most
important areas where improvements
will make adifference,’’ Ms Latham
says.‘‘It was surprisinglydifficult to put
it togetherbecause, while there is alot
of information out there on good
managementpractice, we needed to
look at it fromalifestyleperspective.

‘‘Often they don’thave to do much,
sometimesitmight just be putting things
in adifferent place,like moving fences
or moving troughs.’’
Not all lifestyle blockswere the same,
she says. Some were like mini farms,
somewere extended sections, somehad
sheds for storing vintage cars or
machinery and othershad businesses
run out of them.
The tips included protecting
waterways, understanding yourland,
takingcare of plants and animals,
monitoring septic tanks,managing
fertiliserand manure, and being
responsible with rubbish disposal.
Advice is also available from the New
Zealand LandcareTrust, the
Waimakariri Biodiversity Trust,
EnvironmentCanterbury and the
Waimakariri District Council. Ms
Latham saysthe zone committeewas
working withthe councilstolaunch a
website withthe top 10 tips, and a
lifestyle workshop wasinthe pipeline.
