Celebration asparkling affair<br />

Ahuge audience and anew venue made<br />

for asparklingMatarikicelebration in<br />

Kaiapoi lastFriday evening.<br />

All Together Kaiapoi hosted the<br />

event,which was heldatanew site in<br />

Kaiapoi’s red zone —Norman Kirk<br />

Park. JackieWatson, Chairperson of<br />

All Together Kaiapoi says, they were<br />

thrilled with the audience.<br />

‘‘We can’tbelievethe numbers. The<br />

community has really rallied around<br />

and supported us.<br />

‘‘It’sfantastic to be part of this<br />

spectacle.’’<br />

It is the secondtime All Together<br />

Kaiapoi has run the event.<br />

Jackiesays the weatherconditions<br />

were perfect overall,with only one<br />

smallspellofrain during the earlypart<br />

of the evening.<br />

‘‘It was abeautiful night and not even<br />

frosty, so every one was havingaball.’’<br />

Thousandsofvisitorsattended which<br />

later caused extended traffic delays in<br />

nearbystreets.<br />

For some these delays lasted over an<br />

hour.<br />

All TogetherKaiapoi arranged an<br />

extensive performancelist for the<br />

three hour concert.<br />

It included the Kapa Haka groups<br />

from Kaiapoi<strong>North</strong> and Borough<br />

Schools, Kaiapoi High School staff<br />

band‘‘“Viking Thunder’’,bands<br />

Meanazz and FamilyAffair.<br />

Dance groups using LEDS as part of<br />

their act included Funkdafied Dance<br />

Club and Jenna McKenzieSchool of<br />

Dance for contemporary dance<br />

performances.<br />

Alarge number of food trucks and<br />

merchandisingstalls circled the event<br />

area catering to the thousands of<br />

visitors, while many family groups<br />

congregatedinand around the LED<br />

light stationsscattered throughout the<br />

park.<br />

Aplay area for LED poi and hoops<br />

kept children entertained while the All<br />

Together Kaiapoivolunteerswere kept<br />

busy handingout LED wands.<br />

Ma Bell, who is no stranger to<br />

Waimakariri arts and music<br />

communities, makes areturn to<br />

perform at the Pines Beach Kairaki<br />

Community Hall on Sunday, <strong>July</strong> 23.<br />

Ma’s featured guests for this show<br />

include award winning slide<br />

/fingerstyle guitarist Susan Leigh<br />

Grant, performing with Izzy as The<br />

Blues Mamas.<br />

They will be joined by well known<br />

local musicians Manu Francois and<br />

Sophia Bidwell.<br />

Born in the Caribbean, Manu is an<br />

eclectic unique musical creative, a<br />

percussionist and singer­songwriter.<br />

He is well known for his warm<br />

soulful voice, and beautifully crafted<br />

original compositions.<br />

Sophia Bidwell is ahighly respected<br />

musician in classical, and folk circles,<br />

who converted to piano accordion<br />

many years ago.<br />

Sophia performs throughout the<br />

South in avariety of ensembles<br />

including Cafe Operana, The Manuka<br />

Hunnies, Dr Tand the Dangerous<br />

Women and others. She is the director<br />

of the <strong>Canterbury</strong> Folk Festival, and<br />

Head of Music at Rangiora High<br />

School.<br />

The event is part of the Down by the<br />

River, Kaiapoi Music Series, in<br />

association with Miller Bell Music’s<br />

Acoustic South Project, supported by<br />

Waimakariri Creative Communities.<br />

It opens at the Dunn Avenue venue<br />

at 2pm. Entry is $<strong>20</strong> cash at the door.<br />
