Who can argue with saving money and
being more environmentally friendly?
Rolleston man Flip is pleased to report
he prefers driving his family’s electric
vehicles (EVs) over his previously owned
Toyota Corolla and his wife’s Mitsubishi
Outlander petrol vehicles. Along with
little maintenance and saving money on
ever-increasing fuel costs, the EV provides
a quiet ride with the power of immediate
and smooth acceleration without emitting
greenhouse gases. As a bonus, Flip also
advised, “I hardly ever have to go to a
charger where I have to pay for it.”
With plenty of charging stations
around the area, including Rolleston’s The
Warehouse and Foster Park, Flip uses free
charging where possible. He confirms it is
easy to find places to charge while out and
about. Flip explains, “While we’re doing the
shopping, the car is on charge, and then
afterwards, we just top it, and it’s sufficient
to keep it charged.”

advantage is solar power at home, which
makes it convenient and economical to
charge the cars overnight.
Starting the EV journey with a 30kw
Nissan Leaf three years ago, the family
added a Kia EV6 to their fleet of cars three
months ago. Initially, the Nissan Leaf
caused some range anxiety, but learning
to manage the charging and not waiting
until it’s on zero was the answer. At home,
the fast charge on the Leaf takes five hours,
while the EV6 takes longer. Flip regularly
drives 50km a day, while a recent road
trip to Kaikoura and return was easily
accomplished with no issues and well

within the car’s single-charge range of
528 km. The cooler weather doesn’t affect
the vehicle’s performance, but charging can
be slower.
Flip and his family had been in the
process of ordering a ute as they enjoy
getting out and about and camping,
however due to the EV6’s towing capacity of
1.6 tons, there was no need for the ute. Flip
is keen to recommend EVs to prospective
buyers as they are the “future and make
more sense”, where the range is not an issue
and plenty of charging stations are on hand.
He suggests non-EVs will have higher taxes,
and resale may be harder. Flip also gave
Europe as an example, with a planned EU
ban on combustion engine cars by 2035.
