New Park for Selwyn
One of the great things about being on our Council is the ability to listen and respond to
your feedback. In 2018 you told us that the Prebbleton-Lincoln area needed more diverse
play experiences, some sort of adventure play, safer bike opportunities, more sports pitches
and a dog park. We responded with a masterplan to build just that. Following much more
public consultation, $13.5 million investment, and a huge community effort we opened the
first 14-hectare stage of Kakaha park last month. The sports pitches are staying a little wet
but will be in operation for the next season. There are also two artificial cricket wickets ready
for the summer. The floodlights ensure that early winter evenings don’t stop the fun and
the pavilion and covered pergola area is the perfect spot for a team talk or to catch up with
friends. Prebbleton school pupils put in the mahi and helped plant over 400 natives into the
surrounding landscape. Several cycle features such as jumps, boardwalks and a snake run,
as well as a mini playground, car parking and toilets complete this phase of the park. Looking
ahead, the park will expand to a total of 22 hectares over the coming years with more sports
fields, landscaped pathways, and a more off-road cycling tracks. So, grab your bike, bring your
dog and ball of choice and have a blast at Kakaha Park on Birches Road.
Opening the park with the kick of a ball. So much to do in the new park. Testing skills on the bike board walk.
