the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced in his 

budget statement back in March that the Excise 

Duty on certain products will be changing from 1st 

August 2023. These changes will be passed on in 

full and will take effect for all deliveries from 1st 

August 2023. Further details and the impact by 

product type will be communicated shortly, there 

will also be an August brochure which will reflect 

the new pricing.

Walters. Amy is based at 

Brewery HQ and looks after 

our customer experience.

Tell us about your role in St Austell Brewery. 

How long have you worked for the business? 

I’m Customer Experience Manager for St 

Austell Brewery. My role focuses on driving 

improvement across the business, to ensure 

we’re delivering fantastic experiences for 

our customers. A key part of my role is using 

feedback from our customers to find ways to 

improve our offering, across our pubs, our beer 

brands, and supporting our teams in bringing 

these improvements to life. I’ve worked for the 

St Austell Brewery for just over two years and 

love being a part of the team. 

What does a typical day look like for you? 

I am always busy doing lots of different things. 

From being a part of department meetings 

and ordering stock to being more hands on 

and serving behind the bar, and supervising in 

the kitchen. There is never a day which is the 

same. That’s why I love my job. My favourite 

part of the week is enjoying a pint after work 

on a Friday with the team and getting to try 

some of our latest beers.

What’s your go to drink of choice? 

A pint of one of our brilliant beers, of course. 

Anthem is my current go to drink of choice 

but you also can’t beat a pint of korev in the 

Cornish sunshine. 

Can you tell us something interesting that 

not many people know about you? 

I studied German at University and had the 

opportunity to study abroad for the year 

in Cologne. It was a fantastic experience, 

although don’t ask me to speak any German 

now… it’s a little rusty!

What’s your favourite part of your job? 

My favourite part of my job is getting out and 

about to visit the teams in our pubs. We have 

pubs in such beautiful locations and it’s great 

to see our guests enjoying our food and drink, 

and wonderful service from our teams first 

hand. 

Tell us a little bit about what you like to do in 

your spare time? 

I love spending time in the garden growing 

flowers to make bunches and arrangements. 

The summer is particularly busy with lots of 

beautiful flowers now coming into bloom. 

We’ve also recently bought a camper van and 

are planning lots of adventures in the coming 

months.

Welcome 

We’re excited to launch this new issue with a fabulous 

offer on a pair of French fancies. The Prestige Cuvée range 

of wines was only launched in March and have been a 

roaring success. The wines are made from a blend of grape 

varieties, each delivering something special to the final 

wine, it’s certainly a case of being more than the sum of its 

parts! Try this wine as a quality option for your house pour, 

they’re classy with complex flavours and a juicy fruity finish, 

bound to become a favourite with your locals. 

We have plenty to shout about throughout July and August 

with multiple days dedicated to the celebration of wine. 

Make the most of them and encourage customers to 

indulge in something sparkling before their meal, or to sip a 

glass of old vine chenin or two, with friends. 

Albarino day falls on the 1st of August and is an excellent 

way to take our minds off the impending duty change. It 

also lends itself to the amazing seafood we’re so lucky to 

have landed on our doorstep. We love to drink it with Hake 

Fish and Chips, Monkfish in a punchy marinade or just to 

accompany a simple crab sandwich.

We’ll raise a glass to old friends Shiraz, Cabernet and Pinot 

Noir this summer, each could become a BBQ favourite, 

Shiraz is perfect with a spiced lamb burger, Cabernet a 

classic with steak and Pinot Noir, made to accompany tuna 

in a soy, sherry, garlic and ginger marinade. 

You may be exhausted keeping up with all this merry 

making and if that’s the case, perhaps you’ll join the rest 

of us with a chilled glass of rosé. Sales have been steadily 

climbing since the beginning of the year and show no

world, Prosecco from Veneto in Northern Italy 

has carved an ever-growing reputation for 

more affordable, every day drinking sparklers. 

As with all wines, it’s all about the quality of 

the raw material and with Prosecco becoming 

such a commodity, it is essential to seek out the 

wines that use the best quality grapes – if you 

start with grapes that are under par then the 

resulting wine won’t be much better! 

Parma Ham & Melon Recipe 

Aperol Spritz Recipe 

An organic Prosecco from Italy’s famed north-eastern 

region of Veneto. Notes of peach and green apple are 

complimented by wonderfully creamy bubbles and subtle 

hints of acacia and rose. The classic food and wine match of 

‘if it grows with it, it goes with it’ screams out here! Parma 

ham, from the northern region of Emilia-Romagna, home to 

the town of Parma, is a match made in heaven. The saltiness 

of the ham is offset by the sweetness of the melon; the wine 

cuts through the ham beautifully whilst working in harmony 

with the melon. 

Ingredients 

plenty of ice 

Aperol 

Prosecco 

soda 

an orange slice 

Method 

Fill your large wine glass with plenty of ice. 

Add 3 parts Prosecco (75ml), then 2 parts 

Aperol (50ml) 

Add a dash of soda (25ml) and stir briefly 

Garnish with an orange slice and enjoy!

1 cantaloupe melon 

2 x packs of parma ham, torn 

handful of fresh basil leaves 

pinch ground black pepper 

4 tsp rapeseed oil 

Method 

Cut the melon into thick slices and remove the skin and any 

pips. Then chop into large chunks. 

Divide the melon between 4 plates then add the parma 

ham. 

Scatter with a some fresh basil leaves, season with black 

pepper and drizzle with the rapeseed oil.

Old Vines Day 

The term ‘old vine’ has no legal standing so its perception can vary from country to country, 

especially as vines can live for 100 years plus! As a vine generally reaches adulthood at 7 years 

old, it is classed as mature from 12 years onwards, becoming ‘old’ (in a good way!) from around 25 

years. Vines tend to lose productivity as they age meaning they produce a smaller crop with more 

concentrated grapes, resulting in a wine of more complexity.
