afternoon watching the championships and group classes.
The highlight of the trip would be seeing the class of stock
bulls judged. There would be about 16 older stock bulls all in
the one class, with the heaviest weighing around 1800kg!! It
was some sight to see. We then got to mix with some of the
breeders and enjoyed several drinks at the show through out
the evening.
On behalf on Andrew and myself, we would just like to thank
the Charolais Society for giving us this incredible opportunity
and thanks must go to Allen & Fiona, Ben Harman, Gareth &
Sioned for taking us under their wing and keeping us right on
the trip. If it wasn’t for them we would have found ourselves
eating calves testicles!
Obituary Caldwell McAskie
It is with great sadness that we received news of Caldwell’s passing on 21 December, one of
this country’s true gentlemen. Caldwell was among the pioneers in the early days of Charolais
in Northern Ireland with his Mountjoy herd, importing five heifers from France in 1973. He
remained a lifelong Charolais enthusiast. With a keen eye for stock and an enthusiastic nature, he
was a successful farmer and Charolais breeder winning numerous accolades over the years. His
knowledge of the breed was appreciated at the many shows he judged throughout Ireland.
As a former chairman he maintained a great interest in the ongoings of the Charolais Club and the
Society until quite recently. Caldwell loved meeting people and was very helpful in giving advice
and encouragement to young breeders. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and we
pass our condolences to wife Lila, children Robert, Desmond, Bill, Jayne, and grandchildren.
