SeikoKai Karatehosted aparakarate selfdefence seminar at its Kaiapoibased dojo recently, and chief instructor Sensei KevinMerriman, saysitwas so successful, it is hoped there willbemany more. ShineTribe providesaforumfor people with intellectual disabilities to gatherand shareexperiences in music, artistic projects and mindfulness inspired activities. Kevinsays as soon as the selfdefence seminarwas suggested by Tash Beckinsale, the founder of ShineTribe, he felt her passion for her littletribe. ‘‘It was then just amatter of preparinga lesson plancateringfor each member of the group.’’ Part of the preparationwas holding an independent session with the SeikoKai team in advance of the seminar. ‘‘Ourambition was simple. ‘‘We wanted to empowereach student by providingthem withanopportunity to lead,share what they have learned in the class, and ensure thatthey could take away the lessons being taught and remember them,’’ Kevin says. He structured the classtofocus on a single principle of step and enter. The repetitive natureofthe base movementallowed for different outcomes —wouldbe confrontational situations, Shining ... TashBeckinsale saysthe sessionwas a hugesuccess. ‘‘What made it asuccess was the manner in which instructors interacted with the participants, tailoring them to everyone’s individual learningstyles and needs. ‘‘The passionand willingness to be flexible was so refreshing,and the outcome was everyone felt comfortable, safe and engagedinthe session. ‘‘Everyone went home feeling very empowered,and with abig smile on their faces,’’ she says. By default,the support staffalso took partinthe class. Rhondda saysshe loved the class,and was amazed at the efforts of everyone participating. ‘‘The training wasmade fun, and where required the instructorsadapted moves to suitindividual students.’’ Support Staff Jenny says the class was helpfuland respectful. ‘‘ Tia, who relies on her wheelchair to get around, was really determinedtoshow everyone that she was able to do whatwas taught to her. ‘‘The Senseis werevery helpfulshowing things thatwecan do with just our hands/ arms, allowing Tia to participate in a sitting position and able to use these self defence moves if everneeded. ‘‘Tia lovedbeingable to do what was shown.’’ Support staff Suzi says the class was amazing, fullon fun and involved every individual in differentways. Kevin says the dojo is all about the community and karate spirit. ‘‘This event would not have been possible without the support of many others, such as my employers —Armitage Williams Construction —who supported my involvement, Dan and Jake givingtheir work time to helpmeteach, and Ruby who needed special permission from school. ‘‘Butofcourse, Shine Tribeand the incredible work theydo, should not be underestimated.’’ Scenic marathon returning to Kaikōura OneofNew Zealand’s most scenic marathons is returning to Kaikōura in October. Thefourth annual Kaikōura Mountains to SeaMarathon will be held at Labour Weekend as afundraiserfor Kaikōura High Schooland the KaikōuraLions Club. Organiser Carys Laugesen says the family funeventhas fourdistances 5km, 10km, halfmarathon(21km)and full marathon (42km),with participants able to completethe fullmarathon as ateam event. ‘‘It is very muchagrassroots fundraiser,’’she says. ‘‘It has thatgrassroots charm to it, but we’vegot our feetonthe ground nowand we’reready to start makingitareally big event and anotherreason to getKaikōura on the map. ‘‘It you’ve not beentoKaikōurabefore, it is agreatway to seethe land and the sea.’’ Last year there werearound 100 participants andCarys is hoping for more this year, nowthat Covid uncertainty is behind them. ‘‘We’re keen to attract more people fromNorth Canterbury, Christchurch, and Nelson and Marlborough. ‘‘Wehad an entrant fromthe United States oneyear, who justhappened to be on holiday,and we getafew from Australia and theNorth Island.’’ Mostofthe eventsstartonthe waterfrontatSouthBay,with the5km event starting at the Point Kean seal colony. Courses take in acircuitofthe Kaikōura Peninsula, withthe half marathon heading overtothe Kowhai River and themarathon climbingtothe Mt Fyffecar park. All events finish at the South Bay Racecourse. Participants canwalk the 5km, 10km and half marathon courses, as long as theyspecifytheir intentionwhen signing up, andthere is acut offtimetocomplete the event. The different agegroups promote the local birdlife, includingthe littleblue (penguin, under17 years), dotterill (1829 years), shearwater(3039years), white morph (4049years),skua (5059years), mollymawk (6069years) andalbatross Seaside setting ...
