Focus on
Waimakariri
with Mayor Dan Gordon
Safe, accessible roads
important to residents
At our council meeting, earlier this
month, council asked for the inclusion of
the Rangiora Eastern Link and
Skewbridge in the draft 202427 National
Land Transport Programme (NLTP).
We felt it was important for these
roads to be included in the draft NLTP
for afunding partnership with Waka
Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency).
At the end of the day, if they're not in
there, they can’t be considered.
It is important for residents and
visitors to our District to have safe,
accessible and congestion free roads to
travel.
For this reason, council is continuing
to advocate for better infrastructure
investment from Waka Kotahi for the
whole District.
We are currently considering how we
can bring forward major roading
projects that address some of our
challenges, including traffic congestion.
Expect to see this as part of next year’s
Long Term Plan consultation.
We did welcome the news this month
that the National Party has included the
Woodend Bypass as aroad of national
significance its $24billion transport
package.
The Woodend Bypass was first
confirmed in 2013 following safety
concerns from the community, but Waka
Kotahi stalled the project.
Since then many in the community,
including the Waimakariri District
Council and WoodendSefton
Community Board, have called for and
organised public rallies requesting that
AT THE LIBRARY
this project be prioritised.
Growth areas like Waimakariri need
infrastructure in place so they remain
great places to live.
You can’t allow for significant growth
in terms of housing supply, but not put in
place infrastructure to service this.
The revised Waimakariri Economic
Development Strategy is going out for
consultation this week.
Ten years ago, Council developed the
Waimakariri Economic Development
Strategy which helped to guide our
District through the postearthquake
recovery phase.
Now with the support of Enterprise
North Canterbury (ENC) council has
refreshed this strategy with afocus on
the District’s economic growth for the
next 10 years.
The new Waimakariri Economic
Development Strategy will see an
emphasis placed on climate change
adaptation.
This includes undertaking actions that
support our businesses, industries, and
wider economy transition to alowemissions
future.
The draft strategy outlines avision for
the District as a‘thriving, prosperous
and environmentally responsible
economy, and one that underpins our
desirable local lifestyle’.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor,
The authorities are contemplating
reducing someSH1 speeds downfrom
100kph to 80kph in places.
Isupport that change. Iwill give you
an instance whereby there was no need
for abig articulated trucktopass me —
one instance of many.
Iwas travelling north on thepassing
lanes between Saltwater Creek and
Leithfield.
Iamonthe inside lane travelling at
100kph.
The articulated truck behind me is,
according to law, restricted to 90kph per
hour.
He passes me and slowly disappears
into the distance. This was at night, I
might add.
When Iarrived at Amberley, he was
just disembarking from his truck outside
Classic car gathering
The 23rd Classiccargathering will be
held on Sunday, August 27, at the Better
Half kitchen and bar, on the corner of
Ashworths Beach Road andSH1,
Leithfield, from 9am until 1pm. The
the public toilets.
How much time did he gain by passing
me, travelling at least 20kph to 30kph
beyond his legal limit?
The trip on the Woodend to Rangiora
road, travelling at 80kph per hour, is less
than one minute slowerthan if you were
doing 100kph.
Statistics have shown that theimpact
at 80kph is far less than if you would
have been travelling at 100kph.
So, Iask, what is the point in driving
along this stretch of road at the present
legal limit?
It is one of manyinNorth Canterbury
that should be reduced to 80kph.
Oh no, we will arrive in Rangiora a
minute later.
Yours,
Trevor Stanley Joblin,
