Ulugbek Memorial Museum
Samarkand, Tashkent street, 1
The Ulugbek Memorial Museum was opened in 1964, and in 2010 it had major overhaul along
with the nearby observatory. The museum tells about the life and scientific activity of Mirzo Ulugbek
– the great scientist of the Middle Ages.
The entrance part of the museum building was erected in the style of the portals of medieval
madrasahs, and forms a single ensemble together with the foundation of the observatory and a
unique instrument. The shape of the museum building itself is similar to the dial of a medieval clock,
each part of which tells about Amir Temur and his grandson Mirzo Ulugbek.
Among the exhibits there are astronomical and mathematical instruments and manuscripts found
by archaeologists in the ruins of the observatory and its environs. The exposition also contains
models of architectural monuments of Samarkand, Shakhrisabz, Bukhara and other ancient cities
of Uzbekistan.
