One of the largest British travel magazines, Wanderlust
travel magazine, published an article about nine impressive
fortified cities around the world. The publication included
the most ancient Ichan Kala as “a labyrinth of mosques,
palaces and minarets”.
The top nine walled cities included: Cartagena
Fortress in Colombia, Dubrovnik in Croatia, Taroudant in
Morocco, Yorkshire Castle in the UK, Ichan Kala Fortress
in Uzbekistan, Carcassonne in France, Jerusalem in Israel,
Mdina in Malta, Xian Fortress in China.

British magazine The Times has published 13 of the
best alluring and faraway places to travel in 2023. The
publication included our ancient city of Samarkand in the
list. The list also includes: Australia, Kenya, Qatar, Nagoya,
Maldives, Istanbul and others.
“The golden age in Samarkand began with the era of
the Great Silk Road, when Genghis Khan was building a
powerful empire. However, the beginning of the 21st century
shows the same prosperity: after the arrival of high-speed
trains connecting two other ancient, mesmerizing tourist
centers of Uzbekistan - Bukhara and Khiva, azure-domed
mosques and jewel-studded mausoleums were joined by
a new luxurious complex. Located near the city, the Silk
Road Samarkand complex offers tourists first-class hotels
and unique gastronomy,” the newspaper notes.
