23rd International Exhibition Triennale Milano:
Tashkent Modernism.Index project
On April 17-23, 2023, the 23rd International
Exhibition Triennale Milano was held in Milan
(Italy). During this exhibition, a presentation of
the unique Tashkent Modernism.Index project
was held.
This project aims to interpret and preserve
the modernist architecture of Tashkent. Thanks
to the project, the international community learnt
about a unique architectural style – Tashkent
modernism. The experts took as a basis 20
monuments of modernism, representing the
architectural, social and historical aspects of
Tashkent.
Tashkent Modernism is an architectural
style that developed in Tashkent between the
1950s and 1990s. It was associated with the
modernization of the city, which was taking place
at that time. The main characteristics of Tashkent
modernism were the use of new materials and
technologies, the functionality and simplicity of
forms, as well as the unique style of facades
construction.
It is considered one of the most interesting
and original architectural styles that developed
during that historical period.
Today, many buildings designed in this style
are architectural monuments and attract the
attention of tourists from all over the world.
The Panorama Cinema Hall was chosen as
one of the objects of study of the project. It is
one of the first immersion halls in Central Asia
for watching panoramic and wide-screen films.
The aesthetics, original layout and unique design
of the cinema make it the main masterpiece of
Tashkent modernism and the most famous piece
of architecture of the 20th century.
Other city buildings included in the Tashkent
Modernism.Index project: The State Museum
of the History of Uzbekistan, the Institute of the
Sun, the Tashkent Circus, the Uzbekistan Hotel,
a television center and many others.
