The future of the historicraceway
was put in doubtduring Aprillast year
after theCanterbury Regional Review
of Raceways,commissioned by Racing
NZ —made up of the three racing
codes,thoroughbred,harnessand
greyhounds—recommended it should
be ‘‘disposed of after the 23/24 season’’.
The recommendation wasmade
despitethe review also findingthat the
majority of horses in thewider
Canterbury region were located close
to Christchurch or in North
Canterbury.
Duringthe RangioraHarness Racing
Club’s meetingatthe racewaylast
Sunday club president, Greg Wright,
saidthatheunderstoodadecision
couldbeatleast another year away.
Earlierthisyear he likened the
recommendationtoclose the raceway
to ‘‘having aDamoclessword hanging
overour heads.’’
However, he alsosaid therewas
widespread support fromthe harness
racing community,includingthe
trainers anddrivers,for retaining it
and that support wasreinforced by
racegoers at Sunday’smeeting.
