the excellent standards of research and
patient improvement innovations carried
out by young doctors and other dedicated
healthcare professionals within the field of
gastroenterology and hepatology - and 2023
has been no exception.
‘We are delighted too, that this year for the
very first time, our rostrum of winners includes
pharmacists, who play such an important role
in the care of patients with GI or liver diseases.
‘Every one of our winners has shown
passion for their projects, plus the dedication
needed to complete them to an extremely
high standard, often alongside working or
studying full time. They really are the best of
our profession and provide evidence that the
future of GI and Hepatology medicine and
pharmacists within the integrated healthcare
teams, the applications were open to all
pharmacists working in primary or secondary
care and other areas where service redesign
or any project has had a positive impact on
patient outcomes.
The worthy winners were presented with
their awards and prizes by the President
of the BSG, Professor Andrew Veitch and
the Medical Director of Dr Falk Pharma UK,
Dr Riadh Jazwari. Also at the dinner was
the CEO of Guts UK, MS Julie Harrington,
the Managing Director of Dr Falk Pharma
UK, Mr Tony McFadyen, as well as several
internationally renowned members of the
gastroenterology & hepatology community.
Dr Victoria King, Chair of Trustees at Guts UK
comments: ‘For almost two decades, Dr Falk
Pharma UK and Guts UK Charity have been
working hard to maintain the supply of bright,
enquiring minds within gastroenterology,
hepatology and pancreatology.
‘Each year, we come together to recognise
the dedication, enthusiasm and commitment
shown from medical students, doctors,
nurses and dietitians. For the first time in
2023, we are delighted to introduce a prize for
pharmacists too. To the winners, our future
Guardians of the Gut – congratulations!’
Medical student Ms Ho Kiu Giselle Ngan
received the Dr Falk Medical Student Essay
Prize for her project entitled A Genomewide
Association Study of Non-alcoholic
Liver Disease in India. Ms Ngan undertook
this research project whilst intercalating for
an iBSc Sciences with Clinical Sciences at
University College London Medical School.
Ms Ngan notes: ‘It is a great honour for me
to receive the Dr Falk Essay Prize. I aspire to
further explore the field of Hepatology and
translational medicine in order to promote
personalised medicine and benefit a wider
population. This award provides me with great
encouragement to pursue a medical career
involving clinical research to help progress
medicine.’
Advance Nurse Practitioner Ms Pearl Avery
has won the Nurse Recognition Award for
the evaluation of her novel role managing
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) patients in
a primary care setting, reducing unnecessary
referrals to secondary care and reduction
of patients living with long term unresolved
symptoms.
Ms Avery explains: ‘I believe that my project
has provided real benefit to patients and
the GP practice, and I am passionate about
taking this out to GP networks to see if this
model may be adopted by other practices.
‘Winning this award has provided me with
the funding to support this idea, giving me
capacity to work on the analysis which will
allow me to clearly demonstrate the cost
benefit and how the model can fit into primary
care.’
Dr Jazwari comments: ‘Each year, the Dr
