OFF WITH ITS HEAD! A LOVER’S REVENGE The Survivor: Heath Slaughter (yes, that’s his real name). The Victim: Ford Single Cab Truck The Gory Details: Overall what had happened, now I live in Iowa mind you, I was working at a local car lot in Iowa City. And there on the lot was an old Ford single cab truck that was your typical ragged out smelly farm truck. The truck was a trade in and I'm not sure who owned it (which was probably for the better). I got to work and just started throwing away stuff. I didn’t look under the seats, but would put my hand under them and would feel around to see if there was anything to throw out... This went on a bit until I felt something weird under one of the seats and then noticed my hand was wet... I pulled it out and looked at it and my hand had blood on it. I yelled and looked under the seat to find a pig's head. The Exorcism: The mess from the pig's head was basically blood, etc. I hit the area under the seat with Real Clean and followed up with some ammonia then a splash of Nature's Own. It was a chore... But living in Ainsworth, Iowa, it's hard telling what you'll find in a farm truck. The entire job took 12 or more hours. However, once I was done, and got the pig’s head remnants extracted, the truck was [back to ‘normal’]. The Survivor: Adrian Olteanu The Victim: 2012 Camaro The Ammo: Spraypaint, a screwdriver The Horror Story: Over the years I had the pleasure of detailing many neglected and very dirty interiors, however, this year one interior gave me the run for my money. I received a call from a good friend of mine who was looking to bid on a 2012 Camaro that had been spray painted out of spite. He asked me if I can do something about the exterior and I told him that I got him covered. I spoke too soon. After he obviously won the auction bid and brought the car home. He asked me to come see it. When I saw it, I backed up 2 feet, scratched my bald head and raised my eyebrows. The car was a million times worse than what the picture showed. The whole interior and exterior were spray-painted with orange and gray spray paint. There were misspelled obscenities, carved with a screwdriver, all over the hood and doors of the car. Surely there was nothing I could have done about the exterior so I had to get it re-painted by a professional. The interior was covered in 90% orange paint and 10% gray paint. The paint was absorbed in the grain of the leather and plastic and almost every crevice and crease of the interior was covered in paint. Places like air-conditioning ducts, LCD screen, door panel pockets, dashboard trims and the center console had it worse. The Recovery Process: I worked on it for 5 days straight using different products starting from the least aggressive method of APCs and working my way into light solvents and other solutions. I used no less than 50 Costco rags and about 10 different brushes and tools to get the job done. The Aftermath: I am glad that I had the opportunity to work on this project so I can understand what it takes to battle and win a spray painted interior and I wish that every professional detailer gets to experience this at least once in their life. OH, DEER! The Detailer: Scott Gray, owner of Soapy’s Auto Wash in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The Culprit: Deer blood The Horror Story: One of the worst stains we ever tackled was from a guy who had a minivan and had shot and killed a deer in Texas. Originally the guy took his minivan to the dealer to see what they could do with it, but they gave up and sent him to me. He had been in Texas and had been on a hunt on a game ranch. He successfully cut up and put the deer into a large cooler that he sat on the rear passenger seat for the three-hour trip from Texas to Idaho. The small drain plug in the cooler was accidentally left open. The blood from the meat then drained onto the seat and the floor throughout the three-hour drive home. He did not notice it until he was unloading his cooler when he got home. Blood ended up draining through the seat fabric and all the way into the foam cushion. The Removal Process: We had to remove the seat cover to extract the blood out of the cover and the underlying foam cushion, which the blood had seeped into. We had to do multiple flushes on the foam cushion. We then gave it a heavy dose of odor eliminator and a healthy dose of ozone and put it back together. The carpets were also soaked with blood so a good bit of extraction was needed there. We used some odor neutralizer during the process and then gave it a healthy dose of ozone. The Outcome: We were able to take care of both the smell and stain. 10 | AUTO DETAILING NEWS | VOL. 8, NO. 3 • FALL 2023
INDUSTRY NEWS All the news and dirt concerning detailing businesses, suppliers, events and industry icons. International Carwash Association The numbers are in for the 2023 Car Wash Show, held back in May in Las Vegas, and a whopping 9,000 people attended. A total of 920 exhibitors were on display and the three-day event covered 190,000 square feet in the new West Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Did anyone use the Loop during their stay? Elon Musk’s innovative underground transportation system, the Vegas Loop at Las Vegas Convention Center, an underground transportation system from the mind of Elon Musk, is the first of its kind. Connecting the existing North/Central/ South Halls of the Convention Center to the West Hall, the Loop travels across and under the LVCC in under 2 minutes. According to a Vegas Means Business article, “The system and fleet of all-electric Tesla vehicles are designed to shuttle more than 4,400 riders per hour across the site through the two-mile-long tunnels. The Vegas Loop at the Las Vegas Convention Center has officially opened the Resorts World passenger station, providing direct access to and from the Las Vegas Convention Center. Riders can now access the Resorts World station from any of the four Convention Center stations.” Detailing after adversity The detailing industry is made up of a tough crowd of people, both physically and mentally. Take for instance Isaias Duran, who along with his brother, owns Permian Basin Auto Detailing, of Odessa, Texas. Isaias, who suffered a terrible boating accident a few years back, does all of the physical labor of any other detailer, but he does it all with one less leg. “We were at the lake, and I was wakeboarding and I was involved in a boating accident,” Isaias told cbs7 back in June. “So, the boat came over me and the propeller ended up getting me right below the ankle, so I had to get my leg amputated.” During that time, he admitted that things were pretty dark. But, he knew he had to push ahead and be a role model for his daughter. “He’s pushing for his family,” his wife said in the story. “And I think it shows his daughter ... you know, you want your kids to have it better than you. And I think him starting this and her seeing him busting his butt for us, it shows her, my daddy’s doing it for me and my mom.” The duo said they would like to continue building their business by adding employees. “Being able to bring happiness to their face,” Isaias said in the story. “You get to see the joy in their eyes once they see their investment all shined up.” Co-owner and brother Israel Duran also said in the story, “The thing I love the most is getting to see peoples’ faces. When they see their car and they’re like, ‘oh my... it’s a brand-new car, straight off the lot.’” Nothing will stop this 23-year-old from living his dream! Cerebral Palsy isn’t keeping 23-year-old Carter Jones from living his dream of being a professional detailer. According to an inspiring story out of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, detailing cars has been a passion from Jones ever since he was a child. “When it was bath time, I would always have to take a model car in the bath and wash it,” he said in a June 16 Chat News Today story. Jones was two years old when he went into cardiac arrest and it was discovered he had CP. He said it was difficult finding work when he got older…“So because of my disability I am pretty sure that’s the case, it was very hard for me to find a job.” Instead of giving up on his dream, Jones started his own business back in 2020 called Handicapped & Hustlin’. Thanks to a partnership with Owner’s Pride Auto Detailing Products and Supply Store he is given discounted prices on detailing supplies as well as training and mentorship. Jones said he can do most of his work from his wheelchair, but relies on employees to help him with the hard-to-reach areas, the story said. “That’s where they kind of step in and help with the higher parts because when I do it I’m only about four feet tall so I can’t reach everything,” he said in the story.
