Culinary celebration<br />

Anine­day culinary celebration of<br />

Kaikōura’s famous kaimoana, the crayfish<br />

is sure to tickle the taste buds of visitors to<br />

the sea side town.<br />

Over 30 businesses will showcase a<br />

variety of ways to enjoy this amazing<br />

delicacy at Crayfest Kaikōura from<br />

Saturday November 11 to Sunday<br />

November 19.<br />

Crayfest is running for the fourth year<br />

with the aim of making crayfish accessible<br />

to everyone, celebrating the seasonality of<br />

crayfish, while encouraging sustainability<br />

throughenjoying ajust ataste of crayfish,<br />

and sharing acray among friends and<br />

family.<br />

Mel Skinner,event organiser, says in<br />

2022 over 40 plus crayfish dishes were<br />

dished up, with the People’s choice 2022<br />

winner being Beach House Cafe, with its<br />

Crayfish Eggs Benedict and Ugly<br />

Dumpling Crayfish Dumplings.<br />

‘‘So far on the menu for <strong>2023</strong>, we have<br />

crayfish laksa, spring rolls, souvlaki, pasta,<br />

eggs bene, ravoli, fritters, crayfish cakes,<br />

wonton soup, bisque, fritters, half and<br />

whole cray, barbecue cray and more,’’ Mel<br />

says.<br />

‘‘More dishes always come out of the<br />

kitchens as our chefs get competitive and<br />

creative ensuring they use as much of the<br />

crayfish as possible.’’<br />

This year Mel says there will be several<br />

incredible events running as part of the<br />

overall event.<br />

the menu in away that he believes will<br />

provide the best experience for their<br />

guests, using all the crayfish and<br />

showcasing its flavours.<br />

‘‘We have Beach House Café putting on<br />

Kaimoana Kōhue –Seafood Boil. This is<br />

fantastic fun and acasual evening all about<br />

sharing delicious seafood boil.’’<br />

If you are looking for alittle bit more<br />

adventure, why not Catch and Cook.<br />

‘‘Hapuku Kitchen have teamed up with<br />

Top Catch charters and will take you<br />

fishing, and then teach you how to prepare<br />

and cook Kaikōura most famous<br />

kaimoana,” says Mel.<br />

‘‘If fishing is not your thing, but want<br />

something alittle more hands on, Forage­<br />

Fire­Feast is for you. Forage in Hapuku<br />

Kitchen Garden, where you can watch<br />

Fiona cook crays over an open fire and<br />

feast on your efforts.’’<br />

Mel says if that is not enough to entice<br />

you, they also have live music in the beer<br />

garden while crays sizzle on the barbecue<br />

at Strawberry Tree.<br />

‘‘Crayfest Kaikōura is not just limited to<br />

hospitality, and we have fabulous<br />

catch‘n’cook fishing charters, dive<br />

experiences, helicopter flights, gin tours,<br />

wine pairings and much more.’’<br />

Transpower, the owner and operator of the<br />

National Grid, is undertaking maintenance<br />

(jointinspections) on sections of itsIslington<br />

toKikiwa220 kV transmission line(between<br />

Islington and Kikiwa).<br />

The helicopterwill be operating at around<br />

50mabove the conductor, with aline worker<br />

suspendedunderneath and will hover<br />

stationary forapproximately 3mins while<br />

testing each joint, as highlightedonthe<br />

accompanying map.<br />

and Friday 24<br />

November <strong>2023</strong>.<br />

The work is weather dependentand maychange at<br />
