Georgyna is right on target

GeorgynaOrchard, shooting is her quiet
place.
Controlling her breathing,relaxing and
blocking out everything else except the
sight picture and the target are all the
elements that she enjoys.
‘‘It calms me down and Ienjoy it,’’ she
says as she takes up position behind her
specialist­built .22 calibre target rifle at
the range under the MainPower Oval.
Twenty­five yards away the target is
small, very small, and yet 17­year­old
Georgyna can reach an amazing 99 to 100
percent accuracy as she hits the bull's eye,
making a5mm hole inside acircle only

‘‘It’s about relaxing,focusing on the
target and holding my nerve.’’
Georgyna was arecipient of a2023
MainPower Youth Sports Scholarship and
plans to use the funds to continue her
passion for target shooting as she joins the
New Zealand SecondarySchools shooting
team and continues her climb up the
national ranking tables.
‘‘It’s going to help dad pay for all the
ammunition Ishoot in training.’’
She’s is the National Indoor CGrade
Champion, part of the Plainsman team
who are national district champions,
winner of Ashley and North Canterbury
shoots, amember of the South Island
women's team, and is on target to become
anational AGrade shooter next year. She
is only ayoung shooter, who only took up
the sport four years ago in Year 9.
‘‘I saw it offered as asport and Isigned
up. Ihad enjoyed shooting while on
school camps at primary school, and
when the opportunity was offered Itook
it,’’ she says.
Under the guidance of the Rangiora
Small Bore Rifle Club, the school offers
shooting classes for 35 students once a
week at the MainPower Oval as part of its
sports programme.
Her coach Ross McQueen says
Georgyna has the true steadiness of hand,
and an accurate eye needed to do well at
this sport.
‘‘She has lots of natural talent and she
is wonderful to coach as shelistens and
learns.’’ He says shooting is avery
disciplined sport and her strong work
ethic helps her with her desire to win.
Wrestlers win at champs

Asmall but talented team of wrestlers
from the RangioraAmateur Wrestling
Club made abig impact athe New
Zealand National Wrestling
championships in Tauranga.
Costs prevented some membersfrom
attending, but the performances from
those who did made up for the lack of
numbers.
The championships covered all age
groups from Under 13 to the seniors.
The Seniors had two styles —Greco­
Roman and Freestyle. Both styles are
international and are included in the
Olympics.
Matthew Oxenham and Fergus
Jenkins each won two New Zealand
championships —one in the senior
Greco­Roman and another in the
Freestyle.
Matthew competed in the 86/87 kg
weight division, and Fergus in the 97kg
division.
Matthew also won the trophy for the
Most Scientific Greco­Roman wrestler.
Matthew Stackhouse, in his first year
in senior, acquitted himself well and
was much improved because of his one
month’s training in Wisconsin USA,
prior to the championships. He took
home abronze medal. The club retained
the Smales­Humphrey Shield for the
Champion Senior Freestyle wrestling
club in New Zealand.
