What’s happening in your community… Waimakariri Libraries Welcome 20,000 Visitors inOctober The Waimakariri Libraries are the place to be with record numbers checking out the facilities over the past two weeks. During the school holidays there were 20,000 visitors across the three libraries —Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Oxford. Waimakariri Libraries Content and Discovery Team Leader Luke Sole says it’s hard tojust pinpoint one thing that brought in the crowds, but staff were delighted tosee so many faces. “We had the Treasure Hunt running at all three libraries for the school holidays and we also had the robotics sessions which are popular with kids. “Of course, wewere also operating aspolling booths for the elections, but that provided a great opportunity to sign upsome new members to the libraries as well as welcoming back some previous members.” Luke says some of the biggest feedback they get from people is how surprised they are by the range of things onoffer atthe library. “I thinkpeople oen just thinkit’sbooks.That was their experience of a library.Now they walk in and seeour librariesbustlingwith events,techtoexplore, andspacestoworkorrelax andconnect with friends.” Luke says the best thing about the libraries is how well they cater for multi-generations. He says staff will oen see grandparents with their grandchildren, particularly inthe school holidays and there is something to keep everyone amused and entertained. Currently Waimakariri Libraries are conducting a customer satisfaction survey which people can fill-in online, either from their own homes orthey can come into alibrary and access it from alibrary tablet or PC. Luke says staff really want to hear from people about what they think is working well and what they think can be improved on. “We love getting feedback from people and hearing what they enjoy doing at the library and of course how wecan make their experience even better in the future.” Let us know what you think at: waimakariri.govt.nz/letstalk One Month to Lodge your Silly Season Special Licence With the silly season around the corner, Council is reminding anyone hosting an event or party where you’re selling and supplying alcohol to get your licence application sorted. Many people forget that aSpecial Licence takes a minimum of 20 working days (approximately one full month) to process. This means that to get your festive party planned you need toapply soon. “This is friendly reminder that nothing ruins your Christmas plans more than not having the party basics sorted —like your Special Licence. “There are potentially big fines to pay if you sell and supply alcohol at your event without one. Applying is easy and Council staff will help walk you through the process. So, it’s ano-brainer to get onto this early,” says Billy Charlton, Environmental Services Manager. To host an event where you sell and supply alcohol without aSpecial Licence you risk afine of up to $40,000 and imprisonment. Here are acouple of things that you need to know before applying: • A Special Licence takes 20 working days (approximately one full month) to process. • Toget your licence sorted for Christmas week you will need to put in an application before 21 November. • There are no working days between 20 December and 15 January. This means that applications are not processed during this time. • This also means that Special Licence events up to 14 February 2024 will be affected. • Applications received less than 20 days before the event are unlikely to be considered.
