Support is available By DAVID HILL, Local Democracy Reporter Support is available to help farmers who are feeling the weight of environmental regulations. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has onfarm support teams on the ground throughout the country to support farmers meet the growing pressures facing the industry. Caroline Amyes was appointed Canterbury regional manager 12 months ago, with her team appointed in February. She joined Environment Canterbury staff in giving apresentation to farmers on environmental regulations in Oxford recently, to raise awareness that support is available. ‘‘Our role is to provide on the ground support. Regulations is one aspect, but there is also the changing environment,’’ Ms Amyes said. ‘‘There was arealisation, with the growing number of rules and regulations, that there is alack of expertise to support farmers, so we are looking at how we can bolster that.’’ Onfarm support teams assisted farmers with farm planning, tackling environmental challenges and adapting to change. Funding and support is available for communityled initiatives to assist with developing integrated farm plans, and to train new farm advisers Ms Amyes said there were onfarm support teams in each region, who were able to give regional input to help inform Government decision making. ‘‘We can go out in paddock and talk to farmers and then go and talk to policy staff in Wellington and say ‘this isn’t working in Canterbury’.’’ The Canterbury onfarm support team was working alongside Ministry for the Support available ... NZPork commissioned AgResearch to examine how factors such as animal gender, and muscle pH values impact the eating quality of New Zealand born and raised pork. Consumer testing identified a preference for pork with normal pH levels of 5.52 to 5.65 —just slightly acidic —while those with low pH achieved less favourable scores. Animal gender wasn’t found to influence eating quality for pigs with normal pH levels. However, when it came to pork with low pH levels, meat from entire males had the highest fail rate.
