Garden festival opens
By ROBYN BRISTOW
The Hurunui Garden Festival is full
steam ahead despite Mother Nature’s
attemptstocreate chaos with ahowling
nor’wester.
Chair Meg Macfarlane says all 18
gardens will be ready to open to the
public from today, Thursday, October 26
to Sunday, October 29.
‘‘Everyone just beaveredaway
clearing any storm damage, and
preparing for agreat four days,’’ she
says.
It is the sixth annual tour showcasing
North Canterbury gardens—fromthe
intimate and whimsical, to the grand and
formal.
The gardensrange from Amberley in
the south, through the Waipara Gorge
with its limestone formations, to rolling
hills and productive farmland of
Hawarden, Waikari, Culverden
Rotherhamand through to Cheviot and
HanmerSprings.
Meg says there are not as many tours
as in previous years as the festival does
not provide aprelude to the
Marlborough Garden Festival which
usually would follow on from it, but is
now later in the year.
‘‘We know there is adown turn in the
economy, and Ihave prepared everyone
for that, and we will just take it as it
comes.’’
However, ticket sales were strong, and
it is hoped people will turn out on one or
more of the days as it is only $10 aticket
at the gate of each garden.
Details of all the gardensare on line,
plus the many events,workshops, and
food outlets.
(HGF) is continuing its commitment of
investing back into its community by
awarding the scholarship of up to $2000.
Students applying have to reside in the
Hurunui district, be in their final year of
schooling albeit local or outside the
district, or from homeschooling.
