YULE TIME IDEAS
Sue Penney
Yule is a time of deepest winter. The shortest day and
longest night. It is a time when you naturally feel like
drawing into yourself and hunkering down. However, It
is also a time of great positivity, the days will now start
to draw out and get longer and soon spring will be here.
So what to do during the darker days and longer nights?
Start a craft project
I always find myself drawn to knitting or creating in the
winter months. Even baking will do. In the summer I
always want to be outside in nature but during the
winter I like to be inside, cosy and warm. I love to feel
safe and warm and even love listening to the rain
pattering on the window panes and the wind howling.
All this whilst sitting in the warm by a fire creating
something with my hands makes me feel very happy.
Setting goals for the coming year
For the majority of people, Yule time tends to coincide
with time off, so why not use that time wisely and set
some goals for the coming year? Remember to also
reflect on the year that has passed. What went well,
what could have gone better and what would you like
to change this coming year? Write the goals down and,
if necessary, break them down into little steps that you
can do each day to help you achieve them.
Meditate
Set some time aside each day to do some gentle
meditation. Whether this is simply focusing on your
breath for 10 minutes or listening to a meditation on an
app or something that you have downloaded.
Meditation is proven to reduce stress and improve
wellbeing so start to include it in your daily routine.
Issue 22
Journalling
Think about starting a daily habit of journalling, record the happenings of your day and at least three
things about each day that you are grateful for. This will help you to concentrate on the positive
things in your life and your unconscious mind will instinctively seek out more of the same.
Walk in Nature
Wrap up warm and go for a walk in the forest. Spending time in nature, whatever the weather, will
]
boost your mood and benefit your mind body and soul. Just make sure that you are wearing the right
clothing for the weather conditions!
Create an altar for Yule
The colours associated with Yule are traditionally red, green and white. You can put whatever you are
drawn to on your own altar, whether you want some bright green and red-berried holly, some crystals,
candles or ribbon. The only rule is that there are no rules. Your altar is personal to you. You may want
to burn some incense for the season too. Just remember not to leave naked flames unattended.
CRYSTALS FOR
NOW
Sue Penney
Topaz
Tanzanite
Topaz is a most beautiful crystal, bringing joy and
good health. It is a stone of fortune and love. It
induces relaxation, reducing tension. Promoting
truth, driving away negative thoughts and embracing
forgiveness it is perfect for restoring broken
friendships. It is also the perfect stone for drawing
the right person into our lives. Topaz comes in many
different colours and all have their own unique
healing properties here are just a few examples:
Blue topaz
This is the stone of love, forgiveness truth and joy. It
helps to bring good mood by releasing tension and
radiating feelings of peace, it calms emotions and
soothes the soul. It brings about abundance and
good health. It works with the throat chakra helping
you to articulate and communicate more clearly.
One of my favourite crystals tanzanite is blue
Zoisite, a calcium aluminium silicate, ranging in
colour from deep blue to light violet-blue. It is
believed to help one attain a higher consciousness
and, as it works with the third eye, is great for
working with building your psychic abilities. In fact it
is also known as the awakening stone.
In healing, Tanzanite is one of the best crystals for
boosting the immune system and as it encourages
regeneration is also perfect for stimulating perfect
hair, skin and nails.
Tanzanite is great for removing worries and melting
away fears, when using it to work with the throat
chakra it helps you to speak your truth and gain your
confidence by standing up for what is right.
Pink topaz
This is the crystal that embodies hope and joy. It is a
stone of compassion and helps you to attract
genuine love. It dispels negative energy and will help
you to make good choices in matters of the heart.
Working with the heart chakra this is a great stone
for working on self knowledge, forgiveness,
acceptance and self love.
It will help you to trust yourself to know what is
right and to call on your inner wisdom, becoming the
very best version of yourself. A truly amazing and
beautiful stone.
Golden topaz
Working on the sacral chakra, golden topaz acts like
a battery charger, recharging our spiritual energy and
renewing our internal optimism. It is great for
attracting wealth and abundance into our lives by
removing self doubt and assisting in identifying and
the subsequent correction of unhelpful behaviour
patterns. It helps you to interpret messages from
spirit and strive towards achieving higher goals.
ANOTHER DAY
John Sjovik
I speak to this day and I tell it that I love it.
As with many other features of life on Earth, a day is an
invention, it is manmade. As I listen to the day, I can hear it
speak to me. It tells me that it is indeed a phenomenon of
changing light from sunrise to sunset, from morning to
evening. Its Martian cousin carries out its duties as day in
another fashion, as does the day on the Moon as well as on
the other heavenly bodies. There are no days in a spaceship.
Yet, as an inhabitant of this planet, days and nights are all I
have, as the Earth keeps rotating around its axis.
So I speak to this day and I ask it to allow space and time
for me to feel feelings, think thoughts and perform actions.
I ask it to be at my side and inspire me to use it for things of
purpose, of meaning and value, of beauty and love. I talk to
it and I show it my respect.
I express my awareness that a day is the most democratic
expression of equality there is. Every human being, animal
and creature upon Earth has not more or no less than a day,
upon which follows another day and then one. It is up to us
to make the most of it.
An average human life has 24,000 Earth days at its disposal.
As time progresses from one moment to the next, each day
invites us to achieve something. It may be grand, something
out of the ordinary, or something average and
commonplace. It does not really matter. A human life is built
from moments and achievements, small or large, simple or
important. The day speaks to me to use it purposefully,
without doubt, without hesitation, without judgment.
Keep in mind that each day is unique in its own right.
Tomorrow is literally another day.
THE JOURNEY OF
CACAO
Nasreen Pritchard
It was a warm rush when it first hit me. The power of
it, as my heart rate rose gently. The over whelming
feeling of surrender it allowed. I sent my words
written on paper into the fire and sobbed.
It was years ago with dear friends and guides Kimba
and Danny Bridgeman that I first encountered the
magic and beauty of Cacao. A fire, a circle of friends,
intentions, and music and singing to help guide us.
Oh, my heart. It was undeniable. The spirit of Cacao
was moving through me and had of that moment, set
into motion a ripple of change.
I think it took a while for me to really register the
profound effect of that night and the path it had
subsequently unveiled. Over the following year or
two, I was connecting to this beautiful plant
sporadically at Circles, Kirtans and Meditations.
But it wasn’t until a huge shift in life had been written
that She called for a more dedicated journey from me.
August 2020 came, much change had taken place and
most importantly much learning and healing were
about to unfold. I had no doubt that Mama Cacao was
going to be my ally through this period. So, I made my
first bulk order and committed to the Path… The Path
of the Heart.
At first, I was almost shy with her, as though I was
getting to know a new friend. It’s so curious and
beautiful the relationship we can hold with our Plant
and Animal allies.
I had not until this point been part of the making of
Sacred Cacao. I was guided and shown how best to
integrate this Path into my life with ritual and
reverence, and of course, I trusted that I would find
my personal journey with her in time.
10

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 23
And it is with no surprise that this soon become
one of my favourite parts of each day. I would sing
Mantras, dance in the kitchen, set my intentions
and clear space for my time with her each day.
As the song goes…. “These are a few of my
favourite things” and the really are.
And so, it seemed, I was home. Quite literally
feeling into a new home and environment, and in
my body with my singing and moving, and in my
soul with my deepened listening and connecting.
Gradually, the journey took on different shapes and
forms. From daily, to a few times a week and from
deeper and lighter visits with her. I began sharing
with friends who would come to my home and feel
so humbled by the continued openings she was
offering. No end to the openings it seemed.
I do look back now and smile at our journey. Like a
beautiful relationship, it has changed, evolved, and
deepened with time.
Experiencing ‘heart opening’ is no light task. It will
leave you feeling dizzy with love. Love for
everything and everyone starting with yourself.
And of course, yes, Love can hurt… How can we
not be truly with love without first a knowing and
acceptance of impermanence? Love is our constant
reminder of the deep, rich tapestry and beauty of
this world and a way to experience a life that is
ever-changing and renewing.
Do we love our Pets less even though we are most
likely to outlive them? Do we say, “I will love my
Dog 70% because that way it won't hurt as much
when they are gone”? No, I don’t think we do. But
can we adopt this way of love in our lives with
others and of course ourselves?
How many times in our day are our actions and
thoughts about ourselves, with love in mind? Are
we waiting for something to change before we do
so, are we giving ‘just enough’ love to ourselves/
others to be ‘acceptable’.
11

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 23
How many times would we ‘hold’ some love back from ourselves or others because we are living in a past
truth.
Is the regular walk to work each day not worthy of the same love you give your pet each day?
Does Love ‘come and go’ ? Or is it ever present… Always available and asking to be the source of which we
choose to live through.
Do we go to sleep at night feeling lucky that we didn’t love TOO much. Else goodness knows how much
would be left for tomorrow.
Of course, our tomorrows aren’t promised. They are a repeating gift when given, in which we have the
repeating choice to live in Full Heart.
The Hearts energy and capacity is of course boundless and limitless.
As I was circling through my 3rd year with Her, I found myself saying to a friend “I think I will stop soon, I
think I’ve opened enough”. Hahaha, oh how silly! Immediately I said it we both laughed and laughed as I
had just noticed what I really said. How dare I put a limit on my heart…. When she had done so well and so
beautifully till now in all her encounters and lessons. I had for a brief moment, thought that I could contain
her and only reveal her when I was ‘good and ready’. In fact, and in truth, my heart had been set free. Free
of expectations, truly free of the illusion of separateness and free to express fully and deeply.
Mama Cacao has more than supported my journey over the years. She has held me in deep releases and in
joyous laughter. She has been a humble yet strong observer and a beautiful friend.
I have grown with her as she has shown Connection as the root and Love as the way.
Connection, first and most importantly to self and Love, simply as a way of being.
So, I continue to sing. I continue to Dance, and to surrender… and I am committed to a Path of Magic,
Beauty and Heart.
And of course, the Journey of Cacao is and has always been,
The Journey of Love.
Are we first, Love?
Love first, we are!
Thank you Mama Cacao
MAGDALEN
PAPYRUS
Julie de Vere Hunt
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 23
These three ancient scraps of papyrus have been
locked away in Magdalen College library for over a
century and yet could be one of the most important
documents in the world. Each fragment, the largest
of which is just 4.1cm x 1.3cm, makes up part of a
passage from the New Testament gospel of
Matthew.
With Greek script on both sides of the fragments,
phrases from the 26th chapter of Matthew describe
Jesus’ anointment in the house of Simon the leper at
Bethany and his betrayal to the chief priests by
Judas Iscariot.
Magdalen Gk17 papyrus
A German papyrologist named Dr Carsten Thiede
stumbled across them whilst visiting family in
Oxford in February 1994.
Dr Thiede believes these are the oldest examples of
New Testament ever found dating from the mid-1st
century - an actual eye witness account.
Dr Thiede noticed the papyrus was written in a
distinctive script common in the 1st. century BC but
petering out by the mid-1st century AD.
Papyri dating is complex, but it was
previously thought to be written in the 2nd
century.
Since the papyrus had been originally dated in the
1950’s, important research had been done on Greek
texts from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Qumran
enabling Dr Thiede to reassess the time period the
papyrus was likely to have written.
How had this mysterious ancient papyrus reached
the Old Library at Magdalen College, Oxford?
14

It had been donated by Reverend Charles Bousfield
Huleatt (1863-1908), a one time undergraduate of
the college. After graduating in 1886 in Classics at
Magdalen he took holy orders and spent every
winter until 1901 as chaplain of the English Church
in Luxor, Egypt. It was here he bought the Matthew
papyrus at a local antiquities market, bequeathing it
to Magdalen College when he took up a chaplaincy
in Messina, Sicily. Far more would be known about
his understanding of the papyrus, had he and his
family not perished in the great Sicilian earthquake
in 1908.
With Huleatt were lost most of his effects and
papers, leaving a dead end to any further enquiry.
Matthew d’Ancona from The Times published an
article about the papyrus, catalogued as Magdalen
Gk 17 on Christmas Eve 1994.
Why have we heard no more about this?
Dr Thiede’s and Matthew d’Ancona wrote a book
called The Jesus Papyrus in 1996 expounding on
their research into the fragments.
Unsurprisingly, the academic establishment were
unimpressed. ‘Not invented here’ is alive and well in
these circles…
Central figure above door
Magdalen college was founded in 1458 by William
of Wayneflete, Bishop of Winchester. He dedicated
the college to Mary Magdalene.
According to Magdalen College, during the 15th
century English speakers called Mary Magdalene
Mary ‘Maudelayne’ without the ‘g’. The ‘g’ was put
back in some time later but the pronunciation has
not changed.
When you visit Magdalen College her presence is
unmissable. Magdalen Papyrus Fragment 1
translates as -
She poured it on his head as he was at table. When
they saw this, the disciples said indignantly…”
Matthew Ch 26, verses 7-9: “there came unto him a
woman carrying an alabaster jar of very expensive
perfume, which she poured on his head as he was
reclining at the table. When the disciples saw this, they
were indignant…”
As you enter the chapel
15

Mary Magdalene. Always portrayed with an
alabaster jar.
Is this why Huleatt sent the papyrus to Magdalen
College because of its connection with Mary
Magdalene?
Like Dr Thiede, I recently stumbled across the
Magdalen papyrus when I was visiting Magdalen
College Library with author and soul sister Kathleen
McGowan. For years she has wanted to see a 15th
century manuscript on ‘The Life of Mary Magdalene
and her sister Martha’. Between us we made it
happen and we got so much more!
Kathleen noticed a reference to the Magdalen
papyrus on the college website and asked the
incredibly helpful archivist (eternal thanks Georg) if
we could see it. As it is the oldest artifact they keep
(by over a thousand years) it was often requested by
visitors and Georg was able to locate it instantly.
Kathleen felt the significance of these fragments
and was overcome with emotion as she held the
ancient papyrus. It was a magical moment.
Why does it matter if this papyrus was written in
the 1st or 2nd century?
In the chapel
Well, it matters to me. In Mary Magdalene’s Legacy,
my fictionalised account of what happened to Mary
Magdalene and her followers after the crucifixion,
the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were
written in the 1st century at Lake Mareotis.
Lake Mareotis was a community established by
Mary Magdalene outside Alexandria, Egypt.
The Magdalen papyrus was found in Egypt.
Truth is stranger than fiction.
It feels like the mysteries surrounding Mary
Magdalene have been continually supressed over
2,000 years but now is the time for them to be
revealed.
ROOTS / ROUTES
Carol Coggan
What do you think of when I mention the word roots.
In the last magazine, I talked of being at One with the Universe and
Archangel Ariel being the main Archangel for care of the planet and
the Universe. Roots enable you to further be at One with the
Universe and working with Mother Earth.
As a starter, roots are the basis of plants and trees. The seed
produces roots and shoots. The roots are “programmed“ to grow
down into the Earth and this provides the plant/tree with stability
and nourishment. (I am sure the botanists reading this will know
more). These roots then continue to grow and support the plant,
which then produces fruit/seeds and it starts again. The roots are
underground and generally, we do not see much of their work. We
do not keep pulling them up to check on their growth, we just
expect from our knowledge, that the roots will continue their cycle.
At times we use roots as food such as carrots, potatoes and at
other times the nourishment they have gained from the Earth,
producing fruit/seeds again gives us food such as beans, peas. All
plants and trees are very much in our ecosystem cleaning the air
and supporting the planet. Recent research has shown that trees
have a system of “communication“ through their roots to each
other.
Why am I talking about roots? because we too have roots. We
have our heritage, the knowledge and characteristics that are
unique to each one of us and our families. It is within our
family/carers that we start life, and receive nurture as we grow
into adults. Some of us do not have this smooth transition, but we
all have roots. We have our heritage, through our DNA. We receive
our heritage from generations before us. This is what makes us
who we are, this is our I AM presence.
When working with the Angels and the Universe, we are
Lightworkers, shining our light in the Universe. Let’s engage with
the Universe and our roots; let’s establish our pillar of light. I have
mentioned this before but to refresh your memory, we place our
feet firmly on the ground and then send roots down to Mother
Earth.
18

We thank her for the support she gives us, as she sends energy up
through our feet and legs to our heart centre. From our crown
centre/head we send up our spiritual light up to the Universe. We
thank the Universe for the energy as it descends through our
crown, throat to our heart centre - and so you have your pillar of
light. Energy flowing through you and the power of the Universe.
As you establish your pillar of light you stand more and more in
your own power. You are aware of what makes you who you are -
so you can say I AM. This is the uniqueness of you. Being in touch
with your I AM will enable you to realise your life purpose, why
you are here on this earth. You have the generations behind you,
the support and security of Mother Earth and the Universe, as you
move forward in your life.
This takes us to a different spelling of roots-to routes. In your I AM
presence, you can decide on the route you wish your life to take.
The Angels can guide you, but you have free will, you can choose
whether to fulfil your life purpose or not. So often we know what
we don’t want, but we don’t know what we do want. We have put
our “roots“ down and are living a life in our comfort zone. This
comfort zone may be very uncomfortable but we know it, it is
familiar. We can make choices to change this, change our lives and
patterns of behaviour. We do not have to stick to the decrees laid
down by generations before, we can make changes. This is where
we differ from the carrot/tree. We have our roots but we can
change our “cycle“ of behaviour. We can remain rooted to Mother
Earth, but use the energy of our pillar of light to be One with the
Universe and realise our full potential.
Taking these steps can be scary, but call upon your Angels, as you
establish your pillar of light daily. Ask them what they need you to
know (this might not necessarily be what you want to hear) Listen
to their messages, and then make decisions whether to act on
these messages or not. If you want help in your “route map“
(forgive the pun!) then contact me for an Angel card reading – to
hear what the Angels have to say. Or take a workshop to get in
touch with your Guardian Angel and develop how you work with
the Angels. You can also explore with me the development of your
I AM and together with the Angels we can make some decisions as
to the direction of your life purpose.
As Christmas approaches, what better present to give to yourself
and receive from the Angels, their love and guidance.
NATURE SPIRITS - A
RAIN FOREST VISIT
John Sjovik
Many years ago, I found myself sitting in a long-tail
boat powered by a gigantic outboard engine, darting
along a river into Taman Negara National Park in
Malaysia. From my seat, I had a good view of water
buffalos splashing about in the river, monkeys jumping
from tree to tree and birds enjoying the view from the
canopy of the forest.
A few days later, I hiked to a hideout in the rainforest,
near a water hole, hoping to see wild and exotic
animals. I spent a sleepless night without much success
in seeing anything except a thirsty tapir coming for a
drink. The next morning, I followed a track some ways
into the jungle, to have a look around and to wash in a
stream. Washing turned out to be a challenge, as the
stream was full of leeches eagerly craving my blood. I
decided to mimic the water buffalos I had seen and I
splashed as much as I could while collecting water for
my morning routine.
After washing, I decided to continue along the track I
had found, moving deeper into the rainforest. After a
while, I found a log and I decided to take a seat to
better be able to observe the jungle around me. I
noticed a flower growing high up, near the canopy of
the trees. By using a tree as a host, the flower could get
much more sunlight than if it had grown on the ground.
I am not sure if it was a symbiotic partnership between
the flower and the tree or if the tree experienced the
flower as a parasite.
I often feel that these labels are typical of us human
beings. The difference between a partner and a parasite
is not always all that clear in nature. That is what I
believe. It depends to some extent on the frame for the
judgement or definition of what is supposedly good
(“partner”) and supposedly bad (“parasite”).
24

In healing work, I usually add a comment that I want the
healing to result in the best for the client and also the
best for the universe. As a mere human, I am not in a
position to fully grasp the complete difference between
good and bad. I was thinking about that when I was
sitting on the log in Taman Negara. Nature is neither
good nor bad. It is what it is. It would be wrong to be
judgemental when studying it. Morality and values – if
any – are on another level, within another framework. If
and when you encounter nature spirits, it is important
to try to keep this in mind. Otherwise, you will not be
able to understand any messages from them. You will
not be able to communicate, should you be so fortunate
as to be gifted that opportunity.
I remember a specific Shamanic work I did some years
ago. During the ceremony, I came across the spirit of a
gust of wind. Shamanism is an animistic view of planet
Earth and the Cosmos. A gust of wind can very well
have a spirit. The ritual demanded of me to speak to
that spirit.
Our conversation was quite bizarre and very challenging
for both of us. Most of my questions were answered by
a “What do you mean?” or “I do not understand?”
The most important condition when communicating
with nature spirits is to abandon human values and any
pre-conceived ideas you have. Any “you know” or “isn’t
it?” will only add confusion and misunderstanding.
The trick is really to not listen with your ears but to
drop to your heart and work from there. We need to
close our eyes so we can see more clearly. We need to
stop listening, so we can hear better.
Whilst sitting on the log, the odd twig fell upon me.
Dead leaves descended in a zigzag motion from the
trees and collected on my thighs and feet. Slowly and
with gentle ease the forest was claiming me to become
part of it. I realized that if I were to lie down on the
ground and draw my last breath, my body would soon
lose its shape and form, merge into the texture of the
rainforest and become integrated with the metabolism
and life cycle of nature. For a moment, I felt drawn to
the beauty of that process and I imagined Lord Byron
writing a poem about perishing in the jungle.
25

The inclination to remain in the rich combination of
verdant green and lush collection of pastels was strong,
and I had to brace myself to stand up, brush off twigs
and leaves and retrace my steps to the hideout and
observation platform, where I had stashed my
backpack.
Later in the day, when I had returned to base camp, I
decided to withdraw to a quiet and secluded spot and
to meditate on all the impressions from the day. I
clearly felt that the forest had an almost tangible
consciousness. It communicated with me, but not as a
directed, focused effort, as a human being would. It was
more like a presence; at the same time a conscious
presence as a spiritual one. As I was sitting on the log
earlier in the day, I became aware of a connection with
an omnipresent being. The forest acknowledged me
being there and there was an exchange of information
or energy between us. I tried to radiate respect, love
and a desire for innate understanding. In return, I
received compassion and esoteric wisdom, the type
that you cannot fathom with your mind but that you
need to sieve through the spiritual aspect of your being
before you can begin to understand it.
Keep in mind that there is a difference between
knowing something logically in your mind and innately
in your heart. Sometimes, you simply feel that
something is the way it is and there is no possibility or
even reason for you to explain it rationally. Call it
intuition, notion, insight, revelation or any other
expression that suggests a wisdom that lies beyond
rational thought.
We are living in times of technocratic dominance in
most aspects of our lives, including the way we
interpret the world around us.
I believe that if we limit our understanding of life to
what we perceive with our basic five senses, we will not
only reduce our appreciation of ourselves and the
physical world we live in but also risk losing the
otherworldly aspects of the great mystery of life. We
will end up with a reduction of the experience of being
alive and gain a mere fraction of what could have been
a full immersion in the cosmic matrix, in dreamtime.
26

Human beings have physical, mental and spiritual
capabilities. It is of the greatest importance to be aware
of and to honour all three of them. When I spent time
in the Malaysian rainforest, I experienced the smells of
the forest, tasted the humid air and explored the
texture of plants with my hands. I thought about the
relationship between all living things there and how
plants and animals depend on each other for survival.
And I tried to sense the spiritual aspect of the place and
how it interacted with me, being a visitor and guest.
The forest always speaks to whoever is visiting. Some
people will listen. Some will remain deaf. Part of the
magic of messages from nature spirits is that the
essence of the message is already within you. It was
there when you were born, even before you were born.
What is spoken by spirit is recognition of what you
carry. Spirit sees you as you truly are and mirrors what
you radiate. It may seem like something new and
unknown to you.
People are often ignorant about their true identity,
their true self. Such a revelation can be quite unnerving,
almost a burden. Some people may not be willing to
acknowledge who they truly are and what their purpose
or agenda of life is. They may protest and claim that the
message from Spirit is twisted, misguided or even false.
They may choose to interpret it in a way that changes
it.
It is of utmost importance to listen to guidance from
Spirit with an open heart, without judgment,
assumption or prejudice. If you feel that you do not
understand it, it is because you are approaching it from
the wrong direction. Never ask what the message
means or what it is. Intrinsically you will know it, you
will sense it, maybe not immediately and fully, but
eventually and gradually, the wisdom will become part
of you, will grow from within you and you will realize
that it was always there, congenitally part of you, just
not yet within your awareness.
When the forest speaks to you, when nature speaks to
you, it is first and foremost as one spirit to another. In
order to grasp the essence of the message, you must
try to tune in to another wavelength. Once, I had a
colleague at work, who loved to tell stories.
27

He always began by saying “listen and you will hear”.
It was as if he invited me and others to adapt to his way
of storytelling, his way of speaking, his form of
“language”.
It is a little bit like that when encountering nature
spirits. You need to tune in to a frequency that you at
first may feel unfamiliar with. However, once you get
the hang of it, you will be amazed at the amount of
knowledge and insight you will gain.
Nature is always speaking with you. Be open, drop your
guard and you will hear it.
THE AMYGDALA -
AND ‘IED’
Martin Lewis
Understanding ‘intermittent
explosive disorder’.
Everyone gets frustrated, upset, and angry. It's even
normal to yell, curse, throw things, or beat up a
cushion now and then. But for some people it can get
out of control.
Judging from news reports and social media, the
number of angry people in the world seems to be
increasing. Maybe society is getting angrier, or
perhaps we're less inhibited about acting it out.
It turns out these angry outbursts may be caused by a
little-known psychological condition called
‘intermittent explosive disorder’, or ‘IED’.
Michael McCloskey, PhD, a professor of psychology
and neuroscience at Temple University and a leading
IED researcher states: “When people with IED get
angry, they act out aggressively, yelling and screaming,
breaking things, and getting into physical altercations”.
If the reaction is disproportionate to what has
triggered it, then it could be IED. For instance, if
someone tries to punch you and you punch them back,
that's not IED. But if someone says they don't like
what you're wearing and you punch them, that could
be IED in action.
In effect the appropriate expression of anger is a
normal functional expression that is part of our ‘innate
defence mechanisms’. In psychoanalytic theory these
are defined as ‘reality distorting strategies adopted to
protect the ego from anxiety’.
30

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 23
The mind is incredibly creative when it comes to
finding ways of reducing anxiety. The Amygdala, an
almond shaped gland in each cerebral hemisphere of
the brain, is the part of our basal or ‘reptilian’ brain
that responds (often disproportionately) to emotional
stressors, apparently based on memories of how we
reacted in the past to a similar incident. However
when we become overwhelmed we lose our sense of
proportion, and act on the Amygdala’s ‘instruction’,
which can be as simple as “we are being threatened -
ATTACK”!
In effect they are not in control of their emotions,
a past trauma is!
"Overly aggressive people tend to have lower levels
of serotonin function," Coccaro said. This naturally
occurring chemical messenger, among other jobs,
works to ease aggression. "Think of serotonin as
your braking system," he said. “If your brake fluid is
low, you won't be able to stop”. In general these
people are more depressive and miserable, more
driven to succeed, and their anger is easily aroused.
Emil Coccaro, MD, the vice chair of research in the
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Health at
Ohio State University states: "We don't have any
data on whether it [the inappropriate expression of
anger] is increasing or not," he said. "But clearly life is
faster paced, people feel more stressed, more
miserable, and that could be promoting it."
Coccaro also points out that aggression is an
evolutionary necessity. We need defence
mechanisms to protect ourselves from threats, and as
stated earlier we are incredibly creative in coming up
with novel ways to achieve this.
However, when an unresolved traumatic event is
triggered the Amygdala takes over, and so when a
threat is perceived, it kicks in to trigger either a fight
or flight response. Coccaro explained. "in people with
IED, the amygdala reacts more quickly and strongly.
Their fuse is shorter.”
People with IED don't appear to plan to have their
outbursts. They just happen. (If they are planned
that would be classified as antisocial or
psychopathic behaviour.)
Rather they simply misperceive threats and then
can't control their reaction to those threats. They
literally ‘snap’. IED tends to be a bit more common
in men. Males are typically more physically
aggressive, while women with IED are more verbally
so. According to statistics IED is most common
among those in their teens, 20s, and 30s, after
which it gradually eases with age, although the
threat of an outburst always remains.
Research hasn't determined if any specific job or
socioeconomic conditions make people more likely
to have IED, but genes certainly can be influential.
"The more severe the manifestation of aggression,
the more genetic influence underlies that
aggression," said Coccaro.
31

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 23
Epigenetic (non-genetic) influences are also relevant.
These can be defined as our reaction to
environmental signals that trigger survival strategies.
Learning also plays a role. It's not uncommon for
people with IED to have been raised in angry
households with violent parents, or people who have
suffered a trauma and not been able to express their
emotions in a therapeutic way.
Another potential cause of IED is inflammation,
(literally ‘anger held within’), which also plays a role in
other behavioural disorders, such as depression,
schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. IED can also
result from a head strike that damages the brain's
temporal lobe, where the amygdala is located.
One question that has not been fully researched is
whether childhood tantrums are early onset IED, due
to unresolved trauma, that still influences adult
aggressive behaviour.
"We don't know if it progresses like that," said
Coccaro, "but we do know that about 20% of people
with IED attempt some form of self-harm, and
alcohol or drugs can make people more sensitive to
provocation and more uncontrolled in their
outbursts”.
However, there are other forms of complimentary
treatments available that can help. Meditative
practices, Tai Chi, and therapies that focus on the
person being able to express their feelings are all
worthwhile additions to orthodox treatments.
It is important to note that IED is a ‘triggered’
action. "We all have our defence systems," says Jon
Grant MD, a professor of psychiatry and
behavioural neuroscience at the University of
Chicago. "It's easier to blame others than ourselves,
that's human nature”.
“Most people think IED is just bad behaviour,
especially parents labelling their child as such, and
the person who's acting out needs an attitude
adjustment. But the truth is, there's lots of
biological evidence that IED is a real thing. It's not
simply an attitude.” says Coccaro.
It takes a brave person to admit that they may have
this problem. Depression often evokes sympathy,
but aggression scares us, and when someone admits
to abuse, we tend to automatically want to give our
attention to the victim, not the abuser. We need to
remember that the person who has a ‘short fuse’ IS
the victim, and their Amygdala is telling them, and
the people around them that this is so.
Fortunately, there are ways to manage IED. However,
as with most effective therapies the person has to
agree that they have a problem in the first place,
which tends to be a ‘fuse lighting’ event in itself!
People with IED will often blame others for their
angry outburst, rather than admit they have a
problem that THEY need to deal with.
When they have admitted that they need help then
Cognitive Behavioural therapy, combined with
medication is often the preferred method of
treatment from an orthodox perspective.
Newbury, Berkshire
Michael McCloskey stresses that anger is a normal
human emotion and expressing that anger (within
limits) can be healthy. Occasional small acts of
excessive aggression are normal. But if it goes
beyond that, get help.
"What's interesting about all this," said McCloskey,
"is that people with depression or anxiety will say,
'Oh, I get treatment for that.' But people with IED
tend to think, 'I'm just an aggressive person, and
there's nothing that can be done about it.' That's
just not true.”
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 23
THE AIRY ESSENCE:
VATA DOSHA
Claire Sparks
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of
medicine, identifies three doshas that govern
our individual mind-body make up, plus the
make up of the world around us. We each have
all three of the Ayurvedic doshas within our
mind-body make up – with the proportions of
each as unique as our DNA. Among the three
doshas, Vata dosha combines the elements of air
and space to govern various physiological
functions including the nervous system and
influences our energy, movement, and creativity.
Vata, which is the Sanskrit word for
“movement”, embodies the dynamic, everchanging
nature of life and is responsible for all
body movements including breathing,
circulation, and muscle contractions, plus the
more subtle movements such as transmission of
nerve impulses enabling communications
between mind and body.
Each dosha has a set of qualities which
characterise it and these correspond with
certain times of the day and seasons of the year.
The qualities of Vata dosha are cold, dry, rough,
mobile, subtle and light, making the essence of
Vata dosha naturally more dominant in autumn
and winter. When in balance, these attributes
create a sense of vitality, creativity, and a lively
disposition. On a physical level, this balance
supports efficient digestion, a healthy nervous
system, and a clear mind, with other
characteristics including a lean body frame,
quick thinking, flexibility, and adaptability. When
out of balance you may experience dry skin,
constipation, weight loss, joint stiffness and
anxiety, restlessness, fearfulness, and difficulty
concentrating.
34

The changeable nature of Vata dosha makes it most receptive of the three
doshas to restoring balance, by introducing changes to your food and lifestyle
which counter the natural qualities of the dosha. Here are my top 3
recommendations to balance Vata dosha:
Warmth & Moisture: the cold, dry nature of Vata energy, is balanced by
warmth and moisture with foods such as soups, casseroles and whole grains
which are considered in Ayurveda to be grounding for the mind. Drinking warm
herbal teas can provide internal warmth, whilst limiting stimulants such as
caffeine, which can overstimulate the nervous system and contribute to
anxiety and restlessness in the body and mind.
Oil Massage (known in Ayurveda is Abhyanga): Daily self-massage with warm
sesame oil, with a focus on joints and areas of the body prone to dryness, can
help to alleviate the dry, rough qualities of Vata dosha including dryness and
discomfort in the joints, and help promote an overall sense of relaxation by
settling the nervous system.
Regular Routine: establishing a consistent daily routine which allows time for
rest can help stabilise the variable nature of Vata dosha. Consistency in waking
up and going to bed at the same time each day, plus timing of meals, exercise
and work patterns, help to calm Vata dosha’s tendency to be scattered.
It’s important to remember that everyone is unique, so make adjustments
based on your own experience and needs. This personalised approach is key to
restoring balance through Ayurveda, so consult an Ayurvedic practitioner if
you’re not sure of the best adjustments for you.
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 23
WHAT IS THAT YOU
TRULY DESIRE?
Hannah Gauss
What if I told you that the truest form of yourself lies hidden
behind your secret desires?
You see, darkness is in all of us. The creation of this reality
was dependent on duality to ensure the truest effect of free
will. In order for you to experience light there had to be
darkness, and vice versa. But the psyche felt the threat of
unmasking our imperfection. Maybe it was the purest act of
the human ego yet to create a fear-based narrative around
darkness. The darkness, the unseen, was proclaimed as
seduction to our destruction. The bedtime stories of good and
evil solidified this belief in the collective consciousness.
In time, shame pushed those unattended desires into denial,
where they found fertile grounds to breed what you would
consider true evil. The denial of the desire in the shadow is
the most dangerous form of false morality that there is in this
reality. Everything that is denied, chained up and suppressed
has control over our decision-making progress. A lack of
empowered choices is the decay of autonomy. We are most
vulnerable to intrusion and external control in this state.
Oh, we have been fooled in associating the shadow
with evil, for our greatest gifts, powers, and liberation
comes in the moments of sheer darkness, where we are
left with no other choice but to rediscover our own
ability to be powerful. In the shadows, behind
our darkest unexpressed desires, lies
the most balanced and gentle version
of ourselves.
The planetary constellations of these
past months encourage a look into
the mirror of truth, to unveil what
lurks in our shadow and find that
there is no monster there.
38

This is an invitation to let the Rebel Archetype push
boundaries, and let temptation be the door into your hidden
desires. Here, the Dark Feminine offers you a safe space to
curiously uncover that which you do not dare voice to
yourself.
Let it tempt you.
Let desire be the storyteller of your unmet needs. Here in the
arms of the dark feminine, we are reminded that even hard
roads can be enjoyable to travel on. Dare to look into the
mirror.
What do you see? Is it really a monster or just unmet needs?
Your choice now is to either accept your messiness as part of
humanness or return it back into the shadows. Though the
face reflected back may be gruesome, authentic power lies in
its acceptance.
When we demystify the shadow, we ground it into a tangible
form, like an emotion or even an action. It imminently loses its
strongest and arguably only power over us - to operate
unknowingly from your subconscious. Because we cannot
fear what we can empathize with and we cannot be
controlled by what we accept about ourselves.
Truly, the voyage into our darkness is the one in which we are
tested the most. We are directly facing the illusions and
stories, the identities and coping mechanisms our own ego
created to prevent us from discovering the messiness. Sitting
here takes bravery, dear one. But we are always braver than
we could imagine.
So go on, what is it that you truly desire?
Hidden in the Mist
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 23
Susan always knew she could sense
things that she couldn't see, so when her
husband James starts to act strangely is
there more to his behaviour than meets
the eye?
With her daughter also starting to act
strangely, Susan's nerves are on a knife
edge, having lost all of her self-esteem
at her husband's hands, not knowing
where to turn and with echoes of the
past still clinging persistently to her
home.
Susan instinctively knows that
everyone's survival depends upon her.
Will Susan be able to save her family
from the malevolence which threatens
to engulf them all?
Hidden in the Mist is a supernatural
book that is loosely based on some reallife
experiences that Sue personally had
in her childhood.
“I read Hidden in the Mist in less than a
week as I got gripped by the characters
and the storyline - really needed to know
how it was all going to turn out! I enjoy a
good ghost story and this was a really
good ghost story.”
Pulling out all stops in her debut work of fiction, Sue Penney’s Hidden in the Mist is a
ghostly tale par excellence.
Aware of her own personal supernatural abilities since the age of three, the author
draws on real-life events she experienced as a child to give Hidden in the Mist an
authenticity and scare factor that plays with your mind from the outset. Adding further
to its spooky credentials, the front cover is illustrated with an image of the actual house
in which the author first experienced the paranormal.
Worthy of a solid ten out of ten for its accomplished plot, pace and the fear it evokes,
Hidden in the Mist is most definitely one to read with the lights on full."
Life behind
the mask
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 23
A compelling story of a young mother, happy in her
first marital home, running her successful dance school.
Everything changed one fateful night; following a
severe car accident, her husband developed paranoid
schizophrenia. A year of desperation, misery attempted
murder, a shooting and a suicide followed.
A second husband with rage issues, led to physical
abuse of her son and a life of fear. Follow her fight to
protect her children and explore the horrors they faced
growing up. Years remaining silent for fear of reprisal
and the guilt carried from seeing the effect it had on
her children.
Another near fatal car accident and the unexplained
miracle rescue. An illness that drained her body, stole
her career and left her bedridden. This is one woman’s
battle against insurmountable odds. The will to survive,
protect, overcome years of torment, fear and
oppression and the day she discovered the strength
within, to fight back and step out from ‘BEHIND THE
MASK’
I spent most of my working life as a professional dance instructor, designing and
producing theatrical shows for children. When a severe back injury resulting
from a car crash forced me into early retirement, I started looking for new ways
to be creative and find a new outlet in life to express myself. Writing filled this
void and allowed me to clarify, accept and eventually script what has happened
to me over the years, which makes for a compelling and at times, difficult read.
For a very long time I tried to come to terms with what I have been through and
how it has affected both me and my family. Having finished this book, I am now
able to look back and reflect on my life in a way I never thought possible. The
sheer number and variety of traumas I have experienced is almost
incomprehensible and the horrors of some of the situations are a lot to take onboard.
These have shaped me into the woman I am today.
Within the book you will experience my life in its rawest form including a suicide,
a ruined career, a lengthy lawsuit, a terrible marriage, an abusive husband,
terrified children, a debilitating illness, broken families, dreams shattered, hope,
fear, and impossible choices. Only when you are at your lowest, when you feel
that life has taken too much from you, do you look deep inside yourself and
make a choice. This story is my choice.
AVEBURY HENGE,
FOLLOW UP RITUAL
An article called Avebury Henge Autumn Ritual was published in issue 17 - November/December 2022 where
we - Martin Lewis, Julie de Vere Hunt and myself Jovi Hoonjan carried out a ritual on 23rd September 2022,
to ask ‘Divine to release the emotion of fear from humanity’.
We were called upon again to carry out a second ritual on 1st October 2023. The aim of the ritual was to help
‘humanity to become it's own best friend’.
These rituals were based on raising Levels of Consciousness (LOC), let me recap on what these are. Here is a
scale, created by Dr David Hawkins, of the levels to give you an idea:
20
75
100
500
600
700 and above
= Shame and anxiety
= Grief
= Fear
= Love
= Illumination
= Divine connection/enlightenment
We arrived at 11am and tested what the LOC
was. Martin confirmed it was 25, which then
went down a few minutes later to 24. We were
at the level of ‘shame and anxiety’.
We investigated why this was happening.
Apparently, it is reduced because of pagan rituals
being carried out. These rituals are preventing
the sacred sites across the World from evolving
with the times!
52

I channelled a Lemurian chant, especially for the day, it goes
like this...
Flee akhtee nakhu mianna
Shlukh bah niba druckhi sheen
Eeluah bleethan yinha hab polmiadh
Zubha sheen vebiop hafaa guresh vergraw
Blucktah granfikap vellutha.
and it means:
We awaken life in all its formation
We weep no longer to feign a life of vindication
Instead, we multiply and expand our strength
We will fly high, we will bond and
We will go beyond what we thought was ever possible
We will stand together, we are united.
We stood in a triangle at a specific location sourced by
Martin and repeated the words together.
We all felt something change!
53

54

Julie felt tingling in her legs. I felt tingling going down my back and then through to my legs. Martin, got a big
hit! Martin felt dizzy and had a sudden bout of nausea!!
We stood still for a while to allow the energies to settle.
We tested the LOC - they had immediately zoomed up to 875 within minutes!
We checked to see if other sacred sites needed a separate visit. The answer given was that as Avebury is the
heart centre, the other sites are aligned as soon as Avebury’s energies are uplifted.
We still had a second part of the ritual to complete, however, we needed a break to reboot and gather our
energies.
Testing the LOC again, we found it had stabilised
to 875.
The second part of the ritual was to place a vogel
quartz at the Avebury wishing tree.
Once done, we had another boost of rising Levels
of Consciousness, this time it was a more subtle
affair - luckily for Martin!
We left the sacred site with the levels at 947,
well and truly connected to Divine and
enlightenment!
