Welcome to... THE Club Welcome to our Winter 2023/24 issue! As we turn the page on 2023, I’d like to wish you and your family a healthy and prosperous year ahead. In the face of heightened economic and geopolitical challenges, our government is continuing to take a responsible and targeted approach to building a strong Ontario. We are looking at ideas from all corners of Ontario that will continue to build Ontario’s long-term prosperity and create jobs, while supporting workers and communities. Reducing red tape is critical to strengthening Ontario’s position as a key player in the North American and global economy and creating the conditions that enable people and businesses to thrive. This fall the Ontario government introduced another package of red tape reduction initiatives to help ease the compliance burden on Ontario residents. The new package of measures will make many meaningful changes, including freeing up time for physicians to put back into their practices; improving access to generic drugs and treatment options for patients; creating more pathways to enter the skilled trades; and enhancing consumer protections when buying or selling a vehicle. Just a reminder that, although winter is upon us, there is still so much to do around Sarnia-Lambton, so please take the time to discover all the great events and activities happening every day. In closing, I’d like to wish all The Club’s readers the very best for 2024. Whatever your plans and aspirations, I truly hope that you and your family enjoy a happy, healthy year. Branching Out by Mark Moran, Publisher Not every town or city has one, but the Royal Canadian Legion is an anchor in the social fabric of every place that it calls home, or that calls it home. And your local Legion is changing. Countless hours must have been spent by the Canadians that persevered through the wars of the 20th century, wondering what the future would hold for the Royal Canadian Legions they’d built as their generations aged. Those who fought, along with those who held things together at home and welcomed the soldiers back, established these halls from coast to coast where they could gather, whether they were in their hometown or on the other side of the country. A place they would be welcomed, maybe not to remember what had transpired, but to make a promise to never forget. I wondered, too… I think we all did. There was no Legion in Port Lambton where I grew up, but when I moved to Wyoming at the age of 16 one of my first jobs in a new town was to cut the grass at Branch 388. It was an odd experience because I knew very few people in my new home but was routinely walking in and out of this shrine I never knew existed where the members, while there was nothing fancy about them, seemed like some sort of local royalty. Of course, I didn’t belong. I was only 16 and no one in my family had served in the military. Once I reached a legal age I could’ve been signed in by friends, but never really felt that I belonged, so I didn’t go. A few years later I did end up serving in the Canadian Forces in Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. I was injured and released early. Despite the fact that I had a remarkable experience and had accomplished a great deal, there was a certain amount of shame in that. I served but was never deployed, never had to fight. So upon my return I still didn’t feel that I truly belonged at the Royal Canadian Legion and was rarely in one if it wasn’t November 11th. Fast forward a few decades and the question of what would happen to Branches of the Legion is being answered loudly and proudly in towns and cities across Canada. You no longer have to have served or be family to be a member. You don’t have to be a member to go to a Legion. There are some places where it even seems permissible to wear a hat, though I’d be careful with that one. Branches across the nation have been infiltrated, commandeered by friendly forces bent on keeping their legacy alive. The grandchildren and great grandchildren, and maybe great, great grandchildren, of those who served in the great wars are stepping up. Volunteers with no previous connection to the Legion at all are joining them, with an eye to aid those who have served in more recent years, and that will in the future. The Royal Canadian Legion, wherever it is in this great country, is a community within a community that has persevered for generations, and that’s what today’s leaders are keeping alive. From what I’ve seen they’re doing a pretty fabulous job, and welcoming everyone inside was an important step. I’m finally a member, thanks to an extra nudge by veteran and Sarnia City Councillor Chrissy McRoberts. My wife and I love to visit the local Legion wherever we are on vacation. There’s a consistency that’s persevered in the smallest but most significant ways with the meat raffles, pull tickets, euchre games and pickled eggs (yech), and that unmistakable feeling that you’re among friends and good people, even if you don’t know them. The decor is history in itself and will hopefully never change, because they’re not going to remove the tributes to the past, and we don’t wish for any new ones. I’d never been in the Sarnia branch until October of this year and was in on two Saturdays in a row to see live bands perform (Twang Bastards and Night Moves, and both were fabulous). The admission was free, the crowd was having a great time and drinks were cheap by comparison. I always go for the “Beers My Dad Drank” when I’m at a Legion… OV, Labatt Crystal, Black Label… you get the point. But it’s the people that set the Legion apart from almost any other place. Many younger patrons, enjoying the Legion nightlife for the first time, commented on the dancing. It’s often a place where you can sit back and admire older couples dancing, and you can see how they’ve lived and loved the same dance moves for 50 years. Some of them could barely walk without a cane, but man they could still dance! There’s a camaraderie that can’t be duplicated. It’s not unlike a wedding, where a family comes together, and the young remember to respect and maybe even learn something from the older folks. Some of my good friends are now carrying the load at the Wyoming Legion and are part of this next generation. I’m confident that they won’t be the last, because the legacy that veterans and their families built is a community unto itself, and we are all welcome to be part of it. Welcome to... Welcome to ...
