Community-building in a developing neighbourhood As part of its support for neighbourhood development, aspern Seestadt Neighbourhood Management, commissioned by Wien 3420 AG, focuses on local communitybuilding. A team of nine people is responsible for setting up a programme to support and empower citizens. By responding to local issues, supporting bottom-up initiatives and informing citizens about the development process, the organization aims to build bridges between residents and local businesses and institutions, to create new spaces for meeting and exchange and the development of a lively community in the district. 9. How to build local communities in new development projects? How to foster a sense of belonging in a new neighbourhood and promote cultural exchange? In aspern Seestadt, under the motto ‘Seestadt is what we all make of it together’, the Neighbourhood Management team works with local residents, businesses and other parties to develop local neighbourhood dynamics. 10. Since 2018 a neighbourhood budget has been allocated to fund citizen initiatives. The ‘Ich. Du. Wir. Nachbarschaftsbudget’ (Me, you, we, neighbourhood budget) is an annual programme open to all actors in the district. Following the submission of project proposals, a jury of citizens selects projects such as cooking classes for children, bricolage workshops or a shared wheelchair bicycle for the neighbourhood.
