HAVING A BEER WITH | SKYLER DUTTON
working hard to deliver that cup of
coffee.
What’s the most interesting
experience you’ve had thanks to
coffee?
On a serious note, I like how coffee
can be a vehicle for good. The
amount of nonprofit people in the
world that I’ve met and learned
about and helped uplift in some
way… that’s been really great. On
a more fun note, we used to do
Bluestem and cater backstage for
concerts. I had a nice conversation
with Jason Mraz about coffee.
Which city has the best customers:
Fargo or West Fargo?
That’s the hardest question.
They’re all great. I think Thunder
Coffee has the best customers. We
say that all the time. You see all
10 | THE GOOD LIFE
the viral videos about outlandish
behavior at the corporate coffee
chains. We don’t see that behavior
from our customers. Customers
always ask to chip in for whatever
charitable cause we’re working
on at the moment. Regulars get
to become friends… had a regular
yesterday brought me a pie for
Thanksgiving.
What’s your weirdest coffeerelated
talent?
For sure being able to pour latte
art. Latte art is required for our
baristas, but given my background
in law enforcement, construction,
and oil fields… it just seems
ridiculous for me to know how to
make a tulip in your cup.
What’s the most interesting fact
about coffee?
I think a lot of people don’t know
that coffee is grown as a cherry.
The coffee bean is actually a seed
in the middle. So when you hear
us talk about different processing
methods, those are just different
methods of separating the bean
from the rest of the fruit.
How far away can you spot a
non-coffee drinker?
This is actually a game we play.
Haha! We have a lot of windows
in West Fargo, and you can often
tell if people are coming in to see
us or one of the other businesses.
If you were going to sponsor
a sporting event, which
sport would be the perfect
pairing for coffee?
Anywhere where there’s tired
parents. Youth sports. Hockey
