THREE WAYS T3 CAN
SAVE YOU TIME & MONEY
T3, the Operating System for
Construction, is EquipmentShare’s
cloud-connected technology platform
with apps to help your company
monitor, track and manage its
everyday operations.
T3 can be installed on all of your
company-owned equipment —
regardless of manufacturer — and
every EquipmentShare rental comes
with T3 for the duration of the rental.
With the ability to monitor 100% of
your fleet and provide actionable
insights, T3 can save you time
and money.
Reduce Your Rental Spend
At EquipmentShare, we’re always
looking for ways to help you get the
most from your rental budget — even
if it means spending less with us.
T3 Fleet lets you review fleet
utilization right from your dashboard,
so you’ll know which machines are
making you money and which are
just parked. Then, easily off-rent with
the Rent app and right-size your fleet.
Reduce Service Times & Overhead
With T3’s data reporting and analysis
functions, you can pinpoint ways to
optimize your fleet usage and avoid
costly breakdowns.
Use T3 to identify long equipment
pinpoint the problem before they
arrive.
Reduce Theft
Equipment theft robs you of more
than just a machine — it idles your
workforce and slows your project
down. T3’s GPS and geofencing
capabilities can help keep an eye on
your equipment 24/7.
Simply set up an alert associated
with your jobsite geofence, and T3
can text you if equipment from your
jobsite is started outside working
hours. Then, use T3 Fleet to track
your machine’s location and status,
and easily share vital information
with law enforcement. Best of all,
the EquipmentShare team is there to
help you recover your assets every
step of the way.
T3 has helped contractors recover
equipment — from tool trailers to
skid steers — and send thieves to jail
across the country.
The Bottom Line
T3 lets you replace multiple systems,
spreadsheets and ledgers that track
equipment rentals, usage and service
with one centralized solution —
saving you time and money.
BUSINESS GROWTH
How Contractor Owners Can 20x’s
Their Cash Accounts and Stop Borrowing Time and Money
Wednesday, February 7 | 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. | Keynote Area
You will hear the true story of how one simple-minded contractor started 2020 thin on cash not realizing what the rest of
the year had in store.
Three years later his business is on a sure foot while taking on zero debt. He borrow no money and has no need to ask his
vendors, partners, or subs for additional time for payment.
You can run a small or large firm on cash. You can stop the constant calls from creditors wondering when they are going
to get their money. You can stop living from deposit to deposit. You can stop going to bed every night hoping the next
receivable will be in the mailbox tomorrow.
In this life-changing talk, Scott Beebe (CEPA) will share real numbers from a simple contractor that will motivate and
inspire you to build a business without being dictated by chaos, and placing you in the driver’s seat.
Learning Objectives
1. See how using one or two bank accounts in your business is crippling
2. Watch real life examples unfold showing the growth of the cash over time...even when a business declines in annual
revenue
3. Walk away with a simple structure you can implement tomorrow and the road map to do so
Target Audience: Homebuilders, Remodelers, Contractors
Creative technologies, specifically large-format direct-view LED display technology, is utilized by architects Worldwide
as a compelling visual medium for the creation of engaging, inspiring, socially connected, and compelling environments.
Variations of this technology may be used for indoor or outdoor applications in use cases ranging from small-format signage
to building-scale media facades. This presentation gives examples of various applications ranging from digital experiences
in corporate briefing centers, flagship retail and education facilities, to video activations of glass curtain walls in mixed-use
developments, to iconic large-format public art canvases and immersive sculptural “digital placemaking” installations in
transportation hub facilities.
These examples are shown in the context of how they enhance the built environment by creating a sense of place and have
a positive impact on the social wellbeing of occupants. This course will also elaborate on how the design of these systems is
integrated within the architectural design process through pre-contract and post-contract design development support, how they
are physically installed into new or existing construction, and the associated facility impacts, and ongoing support requirements.
Thursday, 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. | Room 404
Saleh Mubarak
Consultant, author, public speaker, and trainer in construction project management
Contractors have to update the projects’ schedules periodically. This update is so important not only because it provides the
contractor and the owner with an idea of where the project stands at this point, but also because progress payments from the
owner to the contractor depend on information in these updates, specifically amount of work performed this period on each
activity. This amount of work is usually expressed in percent complete. However, there are many types of percent complete,
based on physical estimates (units), cost, time, man hours, or other. It is also important to calculate both baseline and actual
percent complete for the activity, in order to determine if work is on, ahead, or behind schedule. This seminar takes a quick
look at different types of percent complete, explains them, and discusses what they represent and when to use them.
UNLOCKING
OPPORTUNITIES
Bridging the Gap for
Women in Construction
BY CHRISTINE FERRY
SUPERINTENDENT / CONSTRUCTION SERVICES INC. OF TAMPA
The Tampa Chapter of NAWIC, National Association
of Women in Construction, is happy to share some
interesting information on our organization and
construction industry trends.
NAWIC was originally founded in 1953 in Ft Worth, TX,
by women who wanted to support one another in a male
dominated construction industry. There is power when we
stand together and support one another! Our Tampa Chapter
began in 1960 and has been led by many prominent Tampa
Area women through the years.
Currently our Tampa Chapter is working on continuing our
outreach to potential new members, strategic partnerships
and community organizations. We also focus a lot of planning
and effort towards a week in March that we celebrate
Women In Construction, called WIC Week. The 2024 dates
are March 4 to March 8th, 2024.
What does NAWIC “really” do?
NAWIC provides support and means needed (for
women in the construction industry) to develop
leadership skills through:
• Professional Education & Personal Growth
• Becoming Involved with the Community
• Tremendous Networking Opportunities
We will be doing different activities throughout the week,
in the Tampa area. We will focus our events on Professional
Development, building a home with Habitat For Humanity of
Hillsborough County, becoming more familiar with hand &
power tools as well as connecting with the design community
in Tampa and increasing our heavy equipment knowledge!
Our web site is being updated and should have all the
information available in February for people wanting to join
us in celebrating Women In Construction!
Our Chapter was invited to attend a Professional day with
Hillsborough County Schools earlier this year. During the
presentation, I was able to interact with Instructors from local
schools that taught construction, design, plumbing, welding,
electrical classes, and other trades. The most discussed
topic was “Why aren’t more females taking their classes?”
At that point I could only speak to my personal experience
as I had no data to back up any of my perceptions. We
discussed several things like perhaps females felt it is a male
dominated area and they may not feel welcome or perhaps
they anticipated discrimination or harassment. The discussion
sparked an interest in me to search out answers to their
questions. They were very passionate about their trades,
very aware of the shortage of tradespeople and wanted to
encourage females to join the construction industry in Tampa.
My First NAWIC Annual Conference
Only a few weeks after the presentation I was able to attend
my first NAWIC Annual Conference being held that year in
Portland, OR. Wouldn’t you know one of the many excellent
classes being provided at the conference was “In Her Own
Words”, a research report done in May 2023 from the NCCER
(National Center for Construction Education and Research). I
was overjoyed to finally see a research study on the topic!
What I learned was the reasons women do enter the
construction industry is mainly to make money and that
usually there is a pre-existing family background in the
industry, which made perfect sense to me as my Father David
Lawson is an Architect and General Contractor and I learned
the industry from him starting at around age five when he
asked me hold the measuring tape at a project site he was
working on. My curiosity took flight from there!
According to the report, women perceived that there are
unlimited opportunities in the construction industry, there
were many training programs available and Site Leadership
was also possible. Many women felt they carried more
childcare responsibilities and the inflexible hours and the
physically demanding work impacted their choices.
38 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM

As you may expect, the perception of the industry of many
women was that the industry was male dominated, hard &
physical and not welcoming to females. They felt the barriers
to employment in the industry were possible discrimination &
harassment, they needed a personal connection to be hired,
their abilities are underestimated and they had the primary
responsibility for their children. What was nice to see is a
respectable number of women who felt “If a man can do this, so
can I”, which was personally always my feeling about the matter!
Winning Attributes
Just as men are not all the same, women too vary greatly
from each other and this report provided scientific based
research where we can look at the percentages of women
who believe certain things to be true, and we can consider
these trends as we strategize for the future. I was happy
to see the important attributes that women bring to the
industry listed to include having a “Team” Focus, Attention
to Detail, Clean Jobsite and a Safety Mindset. What
construction industry companies wouldn’t love to have those
attributes in their employees?
The report also went on the include advice to construction
companies on the recruitment and retention of women. To
attract more women, a company should raise awareness
that you are agreeable to hiring women, offer training &
advancement and communicate the reality of the job
without sugar coating it. There was mention that there
are “women who are just not going to be interested
in the industry” and that there may not be anything
companies could do about that, but my feeling is
that statement applies equally to men as well.
Part of the challenge is not buying into the
social construct that all men are cookie-cut
to be experienced and confident with their
construction skills and all women want to be
in their home or an office cubicle all day.
Best practices to retain their female employees was
also researched and they found some items companies
could work on to address retention. Discrimination &
Harassment must be met with strong policies and effective
implementation, consistent hiring practices to provide a level
playing field, offer training & advancement opportunities,
treat everyone equally, and accommodate primary caregivers
through on-site daycare, childcare support and/or flexible
hours. This is a list of ideas that can apply to women and
men, equally!!
In conclusion, I was so happy to receive the request to write
this article and share information about NAWIC and our
Tampa Chapter. I believe part of addressing the shortage
of women in the industry should start with our youth. After
attending the class and receiving much more fantastic
information at our NAWIC conference I promptly sent the
information out to the organizers of the Professional Day
event to share the information I received, with the hopes
that the Instructors would take action to help address the
shortage of women in the industry.
Our Tampa Chapter has also been taking steps to connect
with students through the Great American Teach-In that
happens in November each year as well as the Home
Builder Lennar sponsored event “Framework For the Future”
which invites local trade school students
to learn about and tour an active
residential construction site
and meet with trade partners
and organizations that can
help them in the industry.
We will continue to
grow, encourage and
assist women in the
construction industry
and we hope you will
join us in that endeavor!
LATEST
TRENDS
IN GREEN
BUILDING
Every year we see news reports with
a listing of the latest and greatest
new trends in green building design
and construction. While some are
achievable currently or in the near future
others are unrealistic in
their promises for quick
fixes for the environment
for several reasons. This
article will review a few
of the realistic options
in green building which
are currently feasible
including net zero,
green roofs, modular
SARAH
ANDREWS
SUSTAINABLE
SOLUTIONS
construction, retrofitting,
human health and wellbeing,
smart devices,
building information
systems, and biophilia.
We should begin with a review of the
fundamental concepts upon which green
building is based regardless of the rating
system used. Among the principal strategies
we find preservation, protection, restoration,
and resilience. These ideas apply to resources,
the natural environment, historical sites or
structures, habitat, community, and vulnerable
and endangered species of plants and animals.
Resiliency and adaptability following natural
or man-made disasters have also become
key aspects of green building in practical
application. The old “reduce – reuse –
recycle” we’ve seen on trash containers for
years still applies. Reducing our demand
and impacts, reusing materials and spaces,
and recycling refuse and materials are basic
concepts familiar to most in everyday life.
In recent years the focus has switched from
building-based intents to the protection,
preservation, enhancement, and improvement
of human health and well-being in the built
environment. Numerous studies have shown
that when humans are healthy and happy,
they are more productive in the workspace,
their attendance is improved, sick people heal
faster, and school children perform better.
Better attendance and productivity of workers
lead to an increase in return on investment
for owners as well as higher retention rates.
Facilities that enhance the indoor environment
also increase demand for green buildings and
support higher lease rates.
Net zero is a concept with a broad range of
possible applications. There are criteria for
net zero energy, water, waste, and carbon
policies. Water and energy use reductions are
based upon the precepts of reducing demand
and replacing supply with sustainable or lower
impact sources such as renewable energy
and non-potable water supplies. Renewable
energy can come from photovoltaic, solar,
42 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM

wind, wave, or geothermal power generation.
One may also support the production of
renewable energy in other parts of the
country by purchasing renewable energy
certificates if local options are not available.
Reducing the demand for potable water for
uses other than drinking water supports the
reuse of some wasted water like gray water
or partially treated black water for irrigation,
flushing toilets, and possibly process water
for mechanical equipment like cooling towers.
We seek to keep the use of potable water
limited to consumption for life to increase
the use of underutilized water resources like
rainwater. We want to treat stormwater as a
valuable resource not as a nuisance.
Net zero waste techniques are supported by
systems like Total Resource Use and Efficiency
(TRUE) certification. Any physical facility,
including buildings owned by businesses,
property managers, schools, government
agencies and nonprofits can receive
certification of eligible events. These events
would include any public or private organized
gathering at a predetermined time and place
such as conferences, festivals, entertainment,
or sporting events. Opportunities for the
reduction of waste begin with reuse and
reduction of generated streams along with
composting, recycling, anaerobic digestion,
and other processing technologies which
divert waste from landfills or incinerators.
Finally net zero carbon emissions techniques
like carbon capture, afforestation (increasing
forest cover), carbon burial, and the purchase
of carbon offsets help to reduce one’s carbon
footprint.
Green roofs, whether extensive or intensive,
provide a variety of options and can be
combined with solar panels to provide more
bang for the buck by augmenting the positive
effects of using multiple strategies together.
Green roof systems can be designed to look
like a park or may be used for rooftop framing.
A wide variety of plants may be used with
some systems requiring greater maintenance,
more fertilizer and water, and may require high
load-bearing capacity within the structural
systems. Many systems can function as storm
water filters and also provide habitat for urban
wildlife.
A third strategy for supporting the
accomplishment of green building goals
is modular construction. In contrast with
traditional construction methods modular
construction can provide greater flexibility and
reuse, less material waste, and improved air
quality with less moisture in support of human
health targets. This construction method can
be used to reduce the construction schedule
and eliminate weather delays while supporting
built to code construction with quality
materials. Modular construction projects are
safer, better engineered, and offer limitless
design opportunities.
Retrofitting is a means by which to optimize
operations and maintenance along with space
utilization. Old mechanical and electrical
systems can be given new life by incorporating
load curtailment programs and virtual building
automation systems. Existing spaces can be
made new through renovations and upgrades
to enhance and supercharge public visibility,
awareness, and engagement.
Perhaps the most impactful methods to
support green building ideals affect the
relationship between human health and
the physical environment. Evidence based
systems like the WELL Building Standard
by the International Well Building Institute
provide verifiable results about spaces
which enhance rather than hinder health
and wellbeing. The WELL Standard includes
10 concepts which include air, water,
nourishment, light, movement, thermal
comfort, sound, materials, mind, and
community. By providing facilities which
provide clean air and water, opportunities
for movement within and around the space,
creature comfort, and stimulation for the mind
and food for the soul the human creature can
thrive in these environments.
Smart devices have become pervasive in
every aspect of daily living and may increase
the effectiveness of various green building
strategies and techniques by increasing
safety, fitness, and interconnectivity during
construction and beyond. From wearables
like smart watches and fitness trackers to
advanced onboard computers and fleet
telematics, increased compatibility of systems
can lead to greater efficiencies in a wide
variety of applications including smart grids,
road conditions, bridge integrity, rainfall
monitoring, and public engagement.
Building information modeling (BIM)
provides digital planning and design for
use in simulations and digital workflows
to improve efficiency in the design and
construction processes. BIM may be used for
prefabrication of components and systems
to entire structures. Additional tasks such as
space planning and cost estimation benefit
greatly from BIM during the design process
and can be transitioned into the occupancy
phase of a facility for additional management
tools. Smart building systems can manage
building-wide or campus-wide systems such as
HVAC, lighting, energy management, alarms,
communications, maintenance, and security.
Finally, biophilia enhances indoor spaces
through the addition of plants and trees into
walls, interior design, roofs, and landscaping.
Biophilic systems use natural light and water
features to break down the barriers between
inside and outside. Occupants are nurtured
within these spaces, particularly in medical
and educational settings. Humans need that
connection to the outside world to maintain
both physical and mental health.
In summary there are numerous ways in
which to enhance the “livability” of indoor
spaces in support of the human beings living
and working inside those spaces. When the
human soul is properly nourished the physical
self and the mind can be liberated in order
to become the most mindful and caring of
creatures, and we will be free to be the very
best versions of ourselves that we can be.
experienced professionals in the industry can provide
guidance, advice, and a strong support system. Networking
events and forums tailored to their needs can also create
valuable connections.
3. Advocating for Equal Opportunities: Construction
companies and industry leaders need to actively advocate
for equal opportunities, eliminating gender and racial
biases in hiring, promotion, and compensation practices.
Implementing inclusive policies and fostering a culture of
diversity will help break down barriers.
4. Enhancing Visibility and Representation: Highlighting
the achievements and successes of black women in
construction through media coverage, conferences,
and industry events is essential. Increasing visibility and
representation can inspire future generations and challenge
existing stereotypes.
NABWIC’s newest project is to be a historian for the
achievements of Black Women in Construction. By
implementing these solutions, Tampa can pave the way for
a more inclusive and equitable construction industry, where
black women thrive and contribute their unique talents and
perspectives.
