Wheels with wings NEWS The North Canterbury News, January 18, 2024 17 By JOHN COSGROVE OxfordWheels with Wings is returning for the third time in 2024 and organisersbelieve it will be as big, if not bigger than past years. Event organiser Dave McPherson, from the Oxfordand Districts Lions, say he estimated they had over 1500 spectatorsand car enthusiasts come along last year. ‘‘We think therewere over 450 vintage, veteran, classic and modern cars, trucks, tractors and motorcycles who attended plus 14 recreational aircraft from the Canterbury Recreational Aircraft Club.’’ Located at Mr McPherson’s property on Browns Road —sign posted from Oxford—the show will run from 10am to 4pm,onSunday, January 21, and is open to classic and vintage cars, motorcycles and recreational aircraft. It will also be the finish of the Oxford scooter tour, amini version of the famous Christchurch to Hokitika scooter fundraiser which will start at the Rangiora Racecourse and go through Loburn and Ashley Gorge beforefinishing on site. Mr McPherson says improvements this year include, asmoother runway and an extra field on the terrace for parking, allowing for better traffic management. ‘‘We have had wonderful community support over the years and it has helped us make the Oxford Wheels with Wings afun filled, relaxing family day out. ‘‘There will be lots of attractions, classic and custom cars, and planes to look at along with plenty of shade, as we expect the weather to again be bright and sunny as it was last year.’’ He says that although events like this are very weather dependent, the long range forecast is good for the day so organisers are hoping for agood turn out of both cars, planes and people. The scooter run participants will arrive on site around midday and and park in the car park, to allow people to look them over as they raise money for Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis Canterbury. Funds raised at the Oxford Wheels with Wings will go towards supporting community projects organised by the club and to the Oxford Community Trust. NC crimereport Flying away ... A person on ascooter was seen to be checking out vehicles in the Rangiora north area. Avehicle was set alight in Oxford after disorder at anearby address. January 10: Number plates were stolen from avehicle parked at Leithfield. A vehicle was broken into and personal belongings were stolen in Leithfield. A Marlborough man was charged with driving while disqualified in Cheviot, his vehicle was impounded. Two youth were seen jumping afence into the yard of ahouse under construction in Kaiapoi. Amale was arrested for a burglary at avacant Kaiapoi property. January 11: Awindow was smashed and tools stolen from avehicle in Carmana Gardens. Abuilding on Woodend Beach Road was broken into and items stolen. An Amberley resident was awoken by her dog barking and observed amale scoping out her vehicle in the early hours, nothing was taken. Adisqualified driver was charged after being stopped driving in Kaiapoi, his vehicle was impounded. Tools were stolen from atradespersons vehicle while parked in the driveway on Blackett Street. Aside window was smashed to gain access. An offender was disturbed by the alarm while attempting to break into avehicle in Leithfield. January 12: Astolen vehicle was located in Okuku after being submerged in the river. It was taken from Christchurch before Christmas. January 13: Tools were stolen from a tradespersons van on Ashley Street, the rear window was smashed. January 14: AChristchurch male was issued an infringement notice for EBA while driving in Kaiapoi. The summer holidays are not over, we still have plenty of summer left. With long hot days we need to reduce the risk of driver fatigue. The effects of fatigue are similar to the effects of alcohol. If you stay awake for long periods you’ll behave like you have consumed alcohol. After 24 hours you’re as dangerous on the road as someone who is twice the legal blood alcohol limit. To avoid fatigue –plan your sleep times, share the driving, stay well hydrated, eat plenty of snacks and take food with you if out of range. Stop for ashort nap wherever possible in asafe area.
