Fishers lured to Amberley<br />

An awardwinning Amberley artist, known primarily for her<br />
popular paintings of horses, is alsoatalented landscape<br />
painter.<br />
KarinWerner who has drawn andpainted since<br />
childhood and is ‘‘largely self taught, learning from my<br />
mistakes and seeing how other artists solved theirs’’, says<br />
her two passions in life are horses and art.<br />
‘‘Horses have always been afavourite subject, but I am<br />
interested in many other subjects andalsoenjoy painting<br />
en plein air (French for in the open air),’’ she says.<br />
That wideranging interestinother subjects is evident in<br />
her latest exhibition, Pikshers, which opened at the Art on<br />
the Quay Gallery in Kaiapoi lastThursday evening.<br />
But once again it is her equine paintings which really<br />
stand out, especiallythe magnificentReciprocity 1, alarge<br />
oil on canvas painting of two horses grooming each other.<br />
Karin is in demand for commission work, painting horses<br />
but also other animals and pets,plus portraits and<br />
landscapes.<br />
Her exhibition closes on February 14.<br />
Keen fishers can head to<br />
AmberleyBeach on Sunday,<br />
<strong>January</strong> 21, in aquesttolure a<br />
lengthy catch, and snare aprize<br />
at the 30th annual Surfcasting<br />
competition at AmberleyBeach.<br />
Hosted by the Amberley<br />
District Lions Club for three<br />
decades,itisone of the largest<br />
fishingcontestsofits type in the<br />
South Island, with many repeat<br />
entrants turningout each year to<br />
line the beach.<br />
It is ahand casting event, with<br />
arange of prizes awarded based<br />
on the length of the fish caught in<br />
the junior and senior categories.<br />
First prize in the senior<br />
category is $1000 cash.<br />
Prizes are also awarded for the<br />
longest Mullet, largest crab and<br />
all Junior entrants over five<br />
years and under 13 receive a<br />
prize for entering.<br />

Entry cost is $25 per rod in the<br />
senior category, and $5 for junior<br />
entrants (one rod only).<br />
Fishingstarts from 8am and<br />
ends at 3pm, followed by the<br />
prizegiving.<br />
