Camping popular in Nth Canty<br />

Camping in <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> has again<br />
proved popular for locals and visitors<br />
over the holiday season.<br />
Holiday campgrounds and reserves in<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> reported higher<br />
numbers, mostly coming from local<br />
towns and the city.<br />
The Ashley GorgeHoliday Park 61kms<br />
from Christchurch, had afull house over<br />
both Christmas and New Years.<br />
Manager Leila Derveaux,says everyone<br />
behaved and at the same timethere were<br />
also alot of visitors each day to the nearby<br />
Reserve.<br />
She says the new barbecue facilities<br />
opened recently proved popular with<br />
families and groups.<br />
Leithfield Beach Holiday Park owner<br />
Gail Fenemor says this year the weather<br />
played ball and they too had areally good<br />
season.<br />
‘‘Overall our numberswere well up from<br />
last year,’’ she says.<br />
‘‘It was mostly locals camping out this<br />
holiday season and we also<br />
accommodated alargenumber of bigger<br />
sized family groups.’’<br />
Gailsays groups of families or friends<br />
came together from different locations to<br />
go camping, or were neighbours looking at<br />
camping alongside each other so their<br />
children could play together.<br />
Now the camping grounds are in the<br />
shoulder season, Gail says they will soon<br />
see more international tourists arriving.<br />
At the Greta Valley Camping Ground,<br />
owner Kim Chernishoff says their<br />
numbers were steady but down slightly<br />
from last year.<br />
‘‘The weather was good and we were<br />
busy despite the numbers being down<br />
slightly.’’<br />

received. We had mostly locals camping<br />
out this year and everyone was very well<br />

‘‘Now we are looking forward to hosting<br />
international visitors and national<br />
travellers.’’<br />
He says the trust has also been planting<br />
trees to improve the site for future guests.<br />
