Ōtautahi
The place to be whatever the season, summer
is endless in Christchurch in 2024 with major
international sporting events turning up the heat
and adding even more great reasons to visit the
South Island’s biggest city this year.
CHRISTCHURCH IS CRANKING
Ōtautahi Christchurch is the ultimate
playground of fun this March when
it welcomes Crankworx Summer Series
to its thrilling line up of summer events.
Returning to New Zealand this year, the
global mountain biking Summer Series is
taking place at the brand-new location
of Christchurch Adventure Park from
Friday March 1 – Sunday March 3, 2024.
What exactly is Crankworx?
Calling all mountain biking enthusiasts,
fans of adventure sports and extreme
downhill racing... You won’t want to miss
a second of this action-packed weekend
in Christchurch.
Crankworx is the ultimate experience
in mountain biking. Born in Whistler,
Canada in 2004, Crankworx has evolved
into a multi-stop international festival
series. Bringing together the best
mountain bike athletes to compete in
elite-level competitions in a variety of
disciplines, the Crankworx World Tour
festivals also host races for amateurs,
categories for next generation athletes
and contests for young riders.
Now a firmly established mountain bike
event, Crankworx Summer Series will
draw athletes and fans from around
New Zealand and beyond, building up
to the 10th anniversary of Crankworx
Rotorua in the following weeks.
The series is set to take on a fresh
and exciting dimension with two
internationally broadcasted events,
Pump Track and Downhill.
Pump Track: Chains off. Game on.
Strength, momentum and skill are the
name of the game in this arena where
pedal-less power reigns supreme
and a single mistake can cost the
victory. Pump Tracks are continuous
circuits with successive waves and
berms. Pulling and pushing (pumping)
movements are used to pick up speed.
This is where the most epic battles
of the festival will take place, with
racers going head-to-head taking
to the track to battle for chainless
supremacy.
Downhill: Often called the Formula
One of mountain biking, Downhill
encapsulates the highest speeds,
gnarliest tracks and biggest features
in an exciting racing format. The
Downhill Track is known for high
speed, high risk and high adrenaline
racing. It involves riders racing against
the clock on a short (usually 3 to
5 minute long) track, littered with
technical features such as jumps,
drops and rock gardens.
Crankworx perfectly aligns with
Christchurch’s passion for sports,
particularly those that get you out
into the city’s beautiful natural
environment. With the majestic Port
Hills as the backdrop to this event, the
summer scenes will be spot on.
And extra special for Ōtautahi is the
commission of a permanent headto-head
Pump Track and World Cup
level Downhill track for the event,
reflecting the dedicated commitment
of the mountain bike community in
Canterbury. These tracks will provide
a platform for local talent to flourish
and also attract international athletes
and spectators for years to come.
With a variety of single day, multi
day and family passes available,
there’s something to suit all schedules
and budgets.
