Just like you, this story caught my
attention. What is not in the news is
the subject of this article. Walk with
me, please.
Sometimes, I fancy myself thinking
like Sherlock Holmes. Generation X
will remember Holmes, famed for his
uncanny ability to gather evidence
based on his honed skills of
observation and deductive
reasoning. So, like Holmes, I
wondered why Amarachi chose to
commit suicide at work and not at
home. What triggered this state? Was
she suicidal?
It was important to do a background
check. So, I visited her LinkedIn page.
Amarachi landed a job as a
relationship manager at the Globus
Bank in May 2023. She wrote on her
timeline about securing the job, “I’m
happy to share that I’m starting a
new position as Relationship
Manager at Globus Bank!" She had
moved from Zenith Bank.
Amarachi was 32, well-dressed,
pretty, and bright. She also wrote on
her page, “Being the best and
nothing less is my identity. I was
awarded best graduating student
from a pool of over a hundred
students in 2016. The Achievers team
was top performer in 2019, increasing
sales by over a 100% and I was the
team leader. Performing at my job
with excellence and competence has
given me the opportunity to work in
three different units in the space of a
year in Zenith Bank.”
From this, one could deduce that she
was happy and excited about life
and ready to take on the world. It
seemed like everything was going
well for her. On the surface, at least.
Is it fair to rule out the possibility that
she was suicidal? Let’s take a deep
dive into what’s happening in
Nigerian banks. Bank marketers,
Amarachi was 32, well-dressed,
pretty, and bright. She also wrote

students in 2016.
especially those who are far from meeting set deposit
targets, dread going to work on Mondays! Why? They
will be talked down on, bashed, and harassed for not
delivering! They may even be served queries. During
end-of-the-week meetings, some marketers’ selfconfidence
will drop significantly. Is this enough to
trigger suicide?
In Amarachi’s case, it is important to know what
happened at the review meeting that Monday morning,
if there was one. Was the meeting the tipping point for
her? Her suicide note read: “Nothing is working in my
life. My brain is clogged up. The economy is getting
harder. My decisions are wrong. My mind is messed up.
The future doesn’t seem bright at all. I see extreme
hardship, and I can’t bear the pain anymore. I’m sorry
Mom, I’m sorry Dad.”
We all know that one person can start an epidemic. I
hope that Amarachi’s case will not become a tipping
point for other marketers in the banking sector who are
under pressure to perform!
