The village of Plain City is embarking on the first phase of its
Public Square project, a multi-phase endeavor to create a community
gathering place in the heart of the village. The initial phase,
known as The Depot at Public Square, involves the relocation of an
historic railroad depot from Upper Arlington to Plain City’s historic
Uptown District.
With unanimous support from village council, the village has
closed on the purchase of the depot from the Fromm family of Upper
Arlington. The 1,473-square foot depot was originally constructed
in the 1880s in Brice, Ohio, to serve the Shawnee and Columbus
Railway. In 2004, the depot was relocated to northwest Columbus
where it underwent a meticulous reconstruction and restoration by
Barry Fromm. Many of the original depot components were retained,
including the wooden walls and ceilings, while others were
salvaged from other historical structures. The depot was the centerpiece
of a larger rail collection, which also included three historic
train cars that Barry restored and preserved. The depot and its rail
collection served the community as a museum and meeting and
event venue.
After the passing of Barry Fromm in 2018, Barry’s son Jordan
Fromm, daughter-in-law Maria Fromm, wife Lynda Fromm, Ralph
Griffith, and the team at Value Recovery Group set out to find new
homes for these artifacts that would prioritize their continued
preservation as historical assets.
The Fromm family selected Plain City to acquire the depot based
on Plain City’s vision for incorporating it into the Public Square
project.
“A goal of staff and council is to create unique gathering spaces in
our Uptown District that complement our local businesses and landmarks
of Plain City. I’m eager to see the addition of the Public Square
project come to life and help round out our uptown amenities,” said
Haley Lupton, village administrator.
Upon being dismantled and shipped to
Plain City, the depot will serve as the cornerstone
of the larger Public Square project,
where it will provide space for events, visitor
amenities, commercial ventures, and
historical displays. Relocation is anticipated
to occur in June with the facility opening to
the public in early 2025.
When considering purchasing the depot,
village officials cited Plain City’s ties to the
railroad industry which date back to July 4,
1853, when the first train passed through
the community, then known as Pleasant
Valley, on the Columbus & Indiana Central
Railway (a predecessor of the Pennsylvania
Railroad and later, Conrail). It later hosted
The village of Plain City has created a vision for an uptown gathering place called Public Square. The first
phase, set to start this summer, involves the relocation of an historic train depot from Upper Arlington to Plain
City. Future phases include the creation of a park and a marketplace. This rendering represents a preliminary
visualization for the overall project that serves as a starting point and is subject to change.
the Abraham Lincoln Funeral Train in 1865.
By the late 1800s, Plain City was one of the leading stations in
Ohio for shipping livestock. Large corrals in the community held
cattle, sheep, and hogs. Items from all over the country could be
shipped in, as well. For example, stores in town frequently advertised
fresh oysters for sale, brought in from the East Coast. In addition
to the economic advantages provided by the railroad, it also
served as a link to Columbus and points beyond. After passenger
service ended in the 1940s, the village’s original depot was demolished
in the 1960s. The final train passed through Plain City on
July 17, 1986.
The future location of the depot and the Public Square project,
pays homage to Plain City’s history. Historical maps from 1862 and
1875 reveal that the area slated for the Public Square project was
referred to as “Public Square.” Positioned at the corner of East
Bigelow Avenue and Church Street, the site served as the original
location for Plain City’s town hall, fire department, school, and
other early community buildings. Currently owned by the village,
the site is undergoing preparation, including
London hoopster breaks longstanding record
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
A shot at the buzzer from just inside
half-court sent London High School senior
Zach Jones into the school’s record books.
The scene was a regular season home
basketball game against Bellefontaine on
Feb. 17. Jones entered the game 16 points
away from breaking the school record for
total points scored in a career, a mark set in
1992 by Andy Hawkins with 1,495 points.
As the first half was coming to a close,
Jones had accumulated 14 points, and one
of the Bellefontaine player was at the free
throw line. With three seconds left on the
clock, the opponent missed the second free
throw shot and Jones got the rebound. Jones dribbled a couple of
times then launched the ball for a three-pointer. It went in, and the
crowd went wild.
“It was a pretty exciting moment,” Jones said.
Making it even more special was a recorded video message from
Hawkins, the previous record holder, congratulating Jones on becoming
the school’s new all-time leading scorer. The video was shown on
the gym’s big screen moments after Jones broke the record.
“For me, that was a pretty neat thing,” he said.
Jones went on to score seven more points in the Raiders’ 71-51
victory over Bellefontaine, bringing his total points for the game to
24 and his total career points to 1,504. And that was with more scoring
opportunities still on the calendar, including the final two regular
season games and tournament play.
Head Coach Cody Sarensen is proud of what Jones has accomplished
in his high school career.
“It’s been an honor to coach Zach the past four years. His work
ethic and determination has helped him achieve this honor. Zach,
along with his teammates, has helped our team succeed over the
years,” he said.
Jones has racked up several awards for basketball. As a freshman,
he was named second-team all-Central Buckeye Conference
(CBC) and honorable mention all-Central District. His sophomore
year, he garnered first-team all-conference and third-team all-district
honors. Last year, he was named first-team all-conference, second-team
all-district, and special mention all-state. So far this year,
he has been dubbed Madison County boys’ basketball player of the
year and co-player of the year for the CBC’s Kenton Trail division.
Jones also is a standout athlete in football and track and a topnotch
student in academics. He recently signed his letter of commitment
to play football at Colgate University starting this fall. He
is a member of the National Honor Society, has made honor roll
throughout his high school years, and was named academic all-Ohio
in football. Last fall, the London board of education recognized him
as a student who meets the district’s Portrait of a Graduate criteria,
a list of key skills and attitudes for graduates to succeed in college
and careers.
Jones is the son of D.J. and Jen Jones.
Characters bring life to ‘Players’ romantic comedy
Since 2018, Netflix has churned out more than a dozen original
romantic comedies and acquired roughly the same number from traditional
movie studios that didn’t want to risk giving theirs the theatrical
treatment.
For the most part, Netflix’s romantic comedies have made little
impact on the general public or the subscriber base. The few that
have become instant favorites — “Always Be My Maybe,” “The Kissing
Booth,” “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” and “Set It Up” —
have done so due to the charm of their stars, without which a romantic
comedy has little hope of success.
“Players,” the streaming service’s latest romantic comedy release,
leans heavily on the charisma of its primary cast, led by Gina
Rodriguez and Damon Wayans
Jr. With their megawatt
smiles, puppy dog eyes, and
sunny presence, the duo transforms
a movie that feels like it
belongs in the bin of the early
2000s into something watchable, if not downright almost
enjoyable. While I don’t believe it is an instant
classic, it does have some appeal because the two leads
look like they are having a great time with the material
and each other.
In the film, which was released on Valentine’s Day,
Rodriguez plays Mack, a sports reporter who has spent
the last decade with a serious affliction — a strong aversion
to committed relationships. To celebrate her stance
on the single life, she regularly gathers at sports dives
with her small group of guy friends — Adam (Wayans
Jr.), Brannagan (Augustus Prew), and Little (Joel
Courtney) — and comes up with elaborate schemes to get
strangers into the sack and out of the apartment a few
hours later.
On the surface, it appears that all is going well for
Mack but sad music plays as she looks at lovey-dovey
couples, and the wistful glances she shares with Adam
are hints that things aren’t always what they seem.
While at the newspaper office one morning, Mack
meets Nick Russel (Tom Ellis), an acclaimed war correspondent
who is in town to pick up some awards and do
research for an upcoming book. Taken by his beauty, his
accent, and his reputation as a “serious journalist,”
Mack immediately wants to run a scheme to get him interested
enough in her so they can share a night together.
Naturally, when she is at his swanky downtown
apartment adorned with pictures of his parents and
dishes that match, she is smitten and wants more than
one night together.
“I want a drawer to put stuff in at his place,” she tells
her friends who are perplexed and a bit repulsed by her
desire for a genuine relationship. But because they love
her and want her to be happy, they help her come up
the reel deal
By Dedra Cordle
with a scheme called “The Moneyball”
to snag the man of her
dreams. This involves light stalking
to collect data on his likes and
dislikes, on his morning, afternoon,
and evening routines, and
on the kind of women he is attracted
to. Once the information
has been gathered, it is analyzed
via pie charts and graphs and
dissected in a way that will offer
Mack the best odds to make Nick
see she could be the woman of his dreams.
Although the scheme may come across as a 10 on the
creep scale, it is set up by screenwriter Whit Anderson
and director Trish Sie like a zippy heist film. It’s a sharp
and winking-at-the-audience stylistic choice, and it infuses
the story with intrigue as the film works its way
through to the most reliable trope of the romantic comedy:
That the real Mr. Right was in front of our clueless
heroine all along.
Although there are some miscues in the movie — the
dialogue comes across as flat and outdated at times —
“Players” has a watchable quality to it, thanks to the affable
nature of the characters and how they are portrayed
by the equally affable leads and secondary
characters. You get the sense that the actors are having
fun with their roles and with the challenge of making
their characters not come across as sleazy as they could
have been. I imagine the cast spent a few weeks of prefilming
together, bonding over how to make their characters
endearing, coming up with the “loveable rogue”
angles. Overall, their preparation yielded success and
their on-screen fake friendship and off-screen chemistry
worked to make this a romantic comedy that is batting
just above average.
Honoring Black History
As we celebrate Black History Month, let us not only reflect
on the past but also commit ourselves to building
a brighter future. As your State Senator, I am honored
to stand in solidarity with you during Black History
Month, a time dedicated to commemorating the resilience,
achievements, and cultural richness of the
Black community. This month serves as a poignant reminder
of the struggles and triumphs that have shaped
our nation. From the courageous leaders of the Civil
Rights Movement to the trailblazing innovators who
have revolutionized every facet of society, Black Americans
have left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness.
Their unwavering determination in the face
of adversity and their relentless pursuit of justice continue
to inspire us all.
However, Black History Month is not merely a time for
reflection; it is a call to action. At the community level,
there are countless ways to honor Black History Month
and contribute to its celebration. Here are a few suggestions:
Support Black-Owned Businesses.
Patronize Black-owned businesses in your community
and amplify their voices through social media and
word-of-mouth recommendations. By investing in the
economic success of Black entrepreneurs, we can promote
economic empowerment and foster a more equitable
society.
Attend public hearings and meetings where issues
affecting black communities are discussed.
These hearings provide an opportunity for community
members to voice their concerns, share their experiences,
and advocate for change directly to lawmakers
and policymakers. By showing up and speaking out,
you can ensure all voices and perspectives are heard
and considered in the decision-making process.
Engage directly with your elected officials.
Writing letters, making phone calls, and scheduling
meetings with local government officials and state legislators
are all powerful tools for advocacy. Building relationships
with your elected officials and holding us
accountable can help drive positive change from the
ground up.
Get involved with local organizations and advocacy
groups actively working to address issues facing
black communities.
These groups often have deep connections and relationships
with state government officials and can provide
valuable insights and support for your advocacy
efforts. By collaborating with problem solvers who are
dedicated to advancing black communities, you can
amplify your impact and contribute to meaningful
change in your community and beyond.
Together, let us strive to create a society where every
individual is valued, respected, and empowered to live
up to their fullest God-given potential. By honoring the
legacy of Black Americans, we can forge a more just and
unified future for generations to come.
Last month, 14 seniors from Jonathan Alder and London high
schools started bringing home paychecks along with their report
cards, thanks to the new ELITE program offered through Tolles Career
and Technical Center.
ELITE, which stands for Experiential Learning in Technical Education,
is open to seniors from all 11 high schools affiliated with
Tolles and is designed to give students paid, hands-on experience
in a career field of their choosing prior to graduation.
“There are students who don’t want to be in school the entire day
of their senior year and are just taking a couple of courses so they
can graduate,” says Todd Hoadley, Tolles superintendent. “In career
tech, we recognize the importance of real-world work experience in
shaping students’ life skills. Our goal is to keep students motivated
and engaged throughout their senior year, helping them finish high
school on a strong note and better prepared for their future careers.”
In addition to Jonathan Alder and London, seniors attending
high schools in Dublin, Fairbanks Local, Hilliard, Madison-Plains,
and West Jefferson may apply for the ELITE program. Those accepted
into the program are carefully matched with a non-retail position
at a central Ohio business based on their unique interests
and skill sets.
“It’s an opportunity to go out and get a taste of a career-level position
you’re interested in to see whether this is really something
you may want to do,” says Steve Cawley, Tolles internship coordinator.
“You also get a chance to start saving money for your future
life —whether that’s going into higher education or the workforce.”
ELITE students work an average of 10 hours per week with four
scheduling options — morning, afternoon, outside of school hours,
and weekends — that can be mixed and matched to suit the mutual
needs of the student’s and employer’s schedules. So far, all students
are being paid well above Ohio’s $10.45 per hour minimum wage.
“Our business partners are really stepping up to the plate,” Cawley
says. “On average, our students are seeing pay in the $14 to $16
per hour range, but that can also get up into the $20 range, depending
on the field.”
Students log weekly hours on a time sheet that the employer
must sign. The employer also completes a quarterly progress report,
rating the competencies the student has displayed on the job, such
as work attitude, organizational skills, teamwork, communication,
attendance, and following policies and procedures.
“These are substantial learning opportunities, not just shadowing,”
says Kim Hull, support specialist for the ELITE program.
“These students are being given real projects and tasks from our
business partners.”
“They’re providing value to these businesses and, in return, a lot
of our business partners are treating these students as valuable
cogs, including them in their celebratory lunches for meeting company
goals, for example,” Cawley says. “They really appreciate
them.”
Cawley says he expects at least 25 seniors to be accepted into
the ELITE program this coming fall as more students learn about
the opportunity.
“I could even see it up to the 50 to 75 range,” he says. “We’re giving
students the opportunity to get out into the workforce to see
what happens in the career they’re choosing. It’s going to benefit
them greatly however they continue on their career pathway, even
if they find out it’s not what they want to do.”
Seniors interested in the ELITE program must have a 95 percent
attendance rate at their home high school, have no record of major
discipline issues, have a minimum 2.5 grade point average, be on
track to graduate, maintain a grade of C or better in all classes, get
a recommendation from their guidance counselor or school administrator,
and provide their own transportation to and from the workplace.
“There are a lot of boxes that need to be checked, but the students
we have enrolled right now are very happy,” Hull says. “I am
constantly amazed at the enthusiasm that I am encountering from
both our students and the businesses with which they are placed.”
Students can enroll in ELITE for just one semester or for their
entire senior year.
“They can stay with the same employer for the whole year or
change employers at the break,” Cawley says, noting ELITE students
can also earn one elective credit at their home high school if
they work 180 hours in a semester.
“We’re working on developing some additional curriculum for
students, like resume writing, developing a LinkedIn profile and
an elevator speech—little things they can do to build their skills and
log some hours before they are placed in their internships,” Hull
says, adding that, unlike some other programs, ELITE students do
not have to line up their own internships. Tolles does it for them.
“We even set up an interview with the student and the business
partner to make sure it’s a good fit. This is such a unique and exciting
opportunity for students,” Hull says.
MALONE
Donna Marie Malone, 63, of London, Ohio, passed
away peacefully while in hospice care on the morning of
Feb. 4, 2024.
She was preceded in death by: her loving mother,
Marie Malone, and father, Lawrence “Larry” Malone, as
well as several brothers and sisters. She is survived by:
her sister, Barbara (Michael) Reece; her son, Christian
Malone; cousins including Valerie (James) Vernaccini
and Keith Williams; and many nieces, nephews, greatnieces
and great-nephews. She also is survived by her
sister of adoptive family, Diana Fulmer, and was preceded
in death by Jack and Geneva Fulmer, who became
family to her at her darkest hour, as she lost her
father at age 18, and who remain a part of Donna and
Christian’s lives ever since.
Donna loved many people and loved them dearly.
She loved her son with all of her heart and spent her
life making sure that he could pursue his dreams. She
saw him graduate from high school, then college, then
law school, become a lawyer, and then, as she neared
the end of her life, that he was accepted to begin a new
career by entering nursing school.
Donna had previously beaten melanoma in 1997
with the help of wonderful surgeons and doctors which
were able to render her cancer-free for several decades
before she was diagnosed in November of 2023 with
pancreatic cancer. Donna was able, with the help of the
OSU James Cancer Hospital, Madison Health Hospital,
ViaQuest Hospice, and the London Health and Rehab
Center, to spend two more months in comfort and good
cheer with her family and friends.
Until her passing, Donna was devoted to helping others.
Even when she was weak, she would never hesitate
to help anyone. Donna spent her life working with people,
for people. She never entered a restaurant or a hotel
where her instincts to make sure everyone was taken
care of didn’t kick in when she saw something below
standard. Donna did not possess the ability to turn off
her need to help others, even as her body could no longer
keep up with her mind.
Donna struggled with narcolepsy from 2014 until her
passing, but through the struggle, she enjoyed reading
and interacting with others in the community who also
suffer from narcolepsy and cataplexy.
Donna was a native of East Liverpool, Ohio. Although
Donna moved away to be with family, and most
recently resided in London, Ohio, she always loved East
Liverpool and the friends and family she grew up with.
Donna resided in the metro Atlanta area for several
years in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and again in the 2010s.
Donna attended East Liverpool High School, the University
of Akron, and Kent State University.
She leaves behind many “honorary” children and
grandchildren, coworkers at Taco Bell locations in Calcutta,
Columbiana, and Clarion (Pennsylvania), and the
friends of her son, Christian, including Joshua (Rebekah)
Smith and their son Soren, Brandon (Virginia)
Bair, and too many more lives whom she touched to
mention. She also leaves behind several dogs whom she
loved and who loved her dearly, and goes to be with
those who have gone to rest, both two- and four-legged.
In lieu of flowers, her family suggests a donation to St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Donna’s memory.
A celebration of Donna’s life was set for 6 p.m. Feb.
24 at Jalisco’s Restaurant in Salem, Ohio.
Fun ways to ask people to be in the wedding party
Plenty of love and effort goes into coordinating
a dream wedding. Although the
happy couple garners most of the spotlight,
they’re not the only ones who feature prominently
in the wedding.
The wedding party is made up of bridesmaids,
groomsmen, a ring bearer, a flower
girl, ushers, and other guests of honor, such
as a couple’s parents. The wedding resource
The Knot reports that old-school etiquette
once indicated there should be one groomsman
and one corresponding bridesmaid for
every 50 guests, although four bridesmaids
and four groomsmen tends to be the average
nowadays.
Choosing who will be included in the
wedding party requires forethought and
should not be rushed. The rule of thumb is
to ask roughly a year to eight months before
the wedding so those asked have time to
prepare. When that time comes, these fun
ideas can help couples invite loved ones to
be in the wedding party with style.
• Say it with a treat. Remember those
heart-shaped candies that come out at
Valentine’s Day that are printed with sentiments
like “Be mine”? Replicate the idea
by giving prospective wedding party members
cookies iced to look like tuxedos and
bridesmaid gowns with a phrase like “Will
you?”
• Give personalized drinkware. Whether
it’s wine glasses or flasks, have drinkware
engraved with the names of who is being
asked so that everyone can toast when they
say yes. In the event that someone declines,
that person will still have a thoughtful momento.
• Make custom scratch-off cards. This
is one gamble that is likely to pay off when
you present loved ones and friends with
scratch-off tickets that reveal the question,
“Will you be my bridesmaid/groomsman?” besties in the wedding party. Those who are
• Put together swag bags. Take a page up for having a good time will have no problem
wearing the matching outfits when out
out of fashion shows or celebrity parties and
package some luxury items into gift bags for for wedding-related events.
those special people you want to stand by • Fill balloons with confetti and messages.
Ask friends and loved ones to pop
your side on your wedding day. High-end
grooming products, jewelry, electronics accessories,
and more can be great gifts for in the wedding party.
ballons to reveal your request that they be
those who are likely to be in your wedding Engaged couples may have many close
party.
friends and loved ones they want to stand
• Gift robes or T-shirts. Plan ahead for by their side during the wedding. There are
staged and coordinated photos by purchasing
matching robes or T-shirts for all the the celebration.
plenty of fun ways to ask them to be part of
Plenty of tasty options
when it comes to cakes
Something sweet comes near the end of
a wedding reception, and that is the joy the
couple experiences knowing they have their
entire lives ahead of them to enjoy together.
However, there is another sweet treat that
is shared near the conclusion of the wedding:
the wedding cake.
Couples have many options when picking
their wedding cakes. The following are some
tidbits to chew on.
• Couples can choose among various
cake styles. Many opt for a classic style,
which is typically a white or ivory tiered
cake with simple, elegant decorations. Rustic
cakes may be much less ornate, while
modern cakes may be rectangular or square
and feature clean lines and minimalist decoration.
The cake should fit the overall
theme and scope of the wedding as it is another
complementary component of the
larger celebration.
• Wedding cakes can be quite costly.
Couples and their guests look forward to
Wedding Wire estimates the average wedding
cake costs around $500. One way for
indulging in wedding cake near the end of
the reception. The looks and flavors of a
couples to save on their cake is to have a
wedding cake can be as unique as the
faux cake on display, with one tier that is
made from cake and can be cut. Guests will
then be served slices of a sheet cake that is
much less expensive.
addition of egg whites, makes it a more stable
option over traditional buttercreams,
• Couples have many flavors to choose
from. Vanilla is classic and quite popular particularly during warm weather. Alternatively,
couples can opt for a “naked cake,”
because it appeals to a vast number of people.
Lemon, chocolate, and carrot are some which usually has a scant amount of frosting
so that the cake underneath peeks
other popular cake flavors.
• When it comes to frosting a cake, there through.
are various outer coatings that will encapsulate
the cake to make it both beautiful largely fell out of favor, although it is still
• A groom’s cake used to be tradition, but
and durable. Buttercream, Swiss meringue, alive and well in the American South. The
fondant, cream cheese, and ganache all can groom’s cake typically is less ornate than
attest that Swiss meringue, due to the choices in style, interests, and
the wedding cake, and favors the groom’s
flavors.

What to keep in mind
when looking for dress
Planning a wedding requires making
many different decisions. The choice of wedding
attire is among the most crucial decisions
that couples must make. Whether the
wedding is traditional or customized to suit
couples’ personalities, brides and grooms
want to look their best when they say, “I do.”
Many brides-to-be spend a significant
amount of time looking for their ideal wedding
dresses. What defines the right gown
depends on personal preference and is
unique to the person doing the search. For
example, a dress that sets a fairy tale scene
for one bride may not necessarily align with
the tastes of another. The average bride-tobe
tries on three to seven dresses before
finding the right one. The following tips can
help those shopping for dresses find a look
that makes their big day even more special.
1. Don’t get hung up on perfection
Many brides get caught up as they
search for the one dress they consider perfect.
No dress is likely to check every box.
Getting hung up on a desire to find a dress
that has it all may make it hard to see the
beauty in other dresses. Remember, with
the talents of an experienced tailor or seamstress,
most dresses can be tweaked to suit
your vision of the ideal gown.
2. Consider the season
Getting married during the hazy and
humid days of summer is an entirely different
experience than tying the knot during
the heart of winter. The fabric of the wedding
dress should complement the season,
whether it’s lightweight and breezy for a
warm day, or more substantial and cozy
when darting to the ceremony in snowfall.
3. Flatter your figure
Chances are brides-to-be know which
cuts and styles are most flattering. Mimic
those style choices in the wedding dress. If
you want to take focus off of full hips, choose
a basque or asymmetrical waistline. Gowns
with substantial straps or higher necklines
may be better if you have a larger chest.
Sheath and mermaid style gowns are options
if you are confident with your figure
and want to show off your curves.
4. Try a bit of this and that
Don’t go into a wedding dress appointment
with firm parameters. Although you
may have a ball gown style in mind, after
trying on other options something with a
less voluminous silhouette may actually
catch your eye. Many brides also automatically
defer to strapless gowns, when various
straps and sleeves can be very appealing.
5. Arrive with a firm budget
Weddings can be costly. It’s important to
set a budget for the wedding dress just as
you will with other expenses. There are
plenty of dress designers across a wide spectrum
of price points. A willingness to consider
and ultimately purchase a less costly
dress can help you stay on budget.
Browsing through magazines and looking
online can provide wedding dress inspiration
as well. Also, when in doubt, defer to
the experts at bridal shops who have experience
choosing dresses that brides are inclined
to love.
What defines the right wedding gown depends on personal preference and is unique to
the person doing the search.
