NEW CARBON LEVY TO IMPACT ALI SECTOR<br />

Sheerline is highlighting the Government’s<br />

plans to introduce a Carbon Levy, which it<br />

says has ‘big implications’ for importers of<br />

carbon-intensive products like aluminium.<br />

Reports in December 2023 suggested the Carbon<br />

Levy may come into effect by 2027, with many<br />

systems companies around the UK ‘scrambling to<br />

get themselves ready’, according to Sheerline.<br />

freestanding mountain in the world -<br />

Mount Kilimanjaro.<br />

Dad of three Andrew, 43, will start his ascent<br />

up the mountain in September <strong>2024</strong> to raise<br />

money for two charities; Kelly’s Heroes, a<br />

mental health support charity, and Harry’s<br />

Pals, a charity that provides emotional support<br />

to parents of severely ill or disabled children.<br />

Having found out about the incredible work<br />

that climb organisers Kelly’s Heroes do,<br />

Andrew was keen to get involved, with one<br />

ask, that he could also fundraise for another<br />

charity too: Harry’s Pals, so named after his<br />

little boy Harry, eight, who is severely disabled.<br />

Set up by Hayley, Andrew’s wife, Harry’s<br />

Pals provides free counselling and therapy<br />

sessions, as well as short breaks to<br />

help families across the country who are<br />

struggling as they grapple with the emotional,<br />

practical, and physical implications of their<br />

child’s diagnosis.<br />

In terms of aluminium, Sheerline says not just<br />

large manufacturers but businesses of all sizes<br />

could potentially be affected, and is urging<br />

fabricators within the fenestration industry to<br />

‘review their suppliers ahead of time to avoid<br />

increased costs’.<br />

Imported aluminium looks set to be hit with<br />

an additional charge through the Carbon Levy<br />

– costs that systems companies who rely on<br />

overseas supply will look to their fabricators to<br />

cover, according to Sheerline.<br />

Ross Hartshorn, Technical Production Director at<br />

Sheerline, commented: “Sheerline is ready for<br />

the future, but many manufacturers will struggle<br />

UAP, the specialist in locks and hardware<br />

for doors and windows, has expanded into a<br />

new 120,000ft² headquarter building in Bury,<br />

Greater Manchester.<br />

The £750,000 investment has seen UAP relocate<br />

from sites in Radcliffe and Whitefield, bringing all<br />

its processes under one roof. As well as improving<br />

efficiency and connectivity between departments,<br />

the Orbital 60 building in Dumers Lane has more<br />

than doubled UAP’s stockholding capacity.<br />

Order fulfilment for all seven UAP brands has<br />

been streamlined through specialised racking as<br />

well as new picking systems and software. The<br />

building also houses the company’s production<br />

lines, testing centres, and training facilities.<br />

The move follows a year which has seen UAP’s<br />

overall business grow by more than 50%.<br />

Strategic acquisitions with Maher London and<br />

Security Hardware helped to fuel this expansion.<br />

in the coming months and years because the<br />

Carbon Levy has the potential to shake up the<br />

UK aluminium market, which extends to the<br />

fenestration industry.<br />

UAP EXPANDS INTO NEW 120,000FT² HQ<br />

UAP also invested in two new businesses in 2023<br />

– Fire Door Maintenance (FDM) and Armadillo<br />

Metal Coatings. Both are located at the new site,<br />

including FDM’s 3,000ft² Training Academy.<br />

A total of 80 employees are based at Orbital 60<br />

with teams at Security Hardware and Locking<br />

Systems remaining at their existing locations in<br />

the West Midlands and Tyne & Wear respectively.<br />
