PUBLISHER’S NOTE
One year ago when I joined
Global Sky Media it was called
Asian Sky Media. The company
had been producing a number
of market intelligence reports
not only for business jet
fleets, but for helicopter
fleets, infrastructure, training
and charter, and a quarterly
report to provide an up-to-date
market overview and summary for business jets and helicopters.
The geographical coverage of all of these reports was always
Asia-Pacific.
Our name change from Asian Sky to Global Sky was our
statement to our readers and to the aviation industry, that we are
not only about Asia-Pacific anymore. We are going to be much
more than that moving forward.
reports, I am delighted to tell you that we have expanded our
coverage to go beyond Asia-Pacific. The same insights and data
that you have become accustomed to, are now available in our
Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Europe editions. We
always obtain our data from multiple sources including, where
possible, directly from the operators themselves. The criteria
remain the same for fleet reports, where the aircraft must be in
service, must be used only for civil purposes, and must be based
in the region to be counted.
To our existing readers, supporters and clients, I hope our
expanded coverage will give you even greater value than in the
past. To our new readers around the world, I hope our intelligence
brings you valuable knowledge to assist your businesses. You
can look forward to more international research for other types of
aircraft and aviation services throughout the year.
Since the summer of last year we have been writing daily news
and delivering it through our upgraded and personalized website
alongside our weekly newsletter sent to thousands of subscribers
worldwide. Our research, such as the publication you are reading
now, has taken significant steps forward in becoming truly worldclass,
by achieving higher levels of professionalism.
Our global news coverage now includes business aviation,
general aviation, helicopters and advanced air mobility. For our
YE 2022 EUROPE BUSINESS JET FLEET REPORT | 3

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
There were 2,428 business jets operating in Europe at the end of December 2022, which was a year-on-year increase of
1.4%. The fleet changes during 2022 comprised 93 new deliveries, 210 pre-owned additions and 269 deductions, which
resulted in a net fleet addition of 34 aircraft. Business jet demand in Europe continued to be affected by the COVID-19
pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, especially for medium and long-haul flights, as travel restrictions to many
regions and countries remained in place during much of 2022. On a more positive note, the year-on-year fleet growth
and increasing number of Long Range and Very Light jets are signs of increased demand for European operators to use
business jets inside Europe, as well as on flights to destinations outside of the region.
Despite a 2.5% year-on-year reduction in
terms of fleet size, Textron continued to
be the most popular Original Equipment
Manufacturer (OEM) in Europe with a
fleet of 929 jets and 38% market share
at the end of 2022. This highlighted
the preference for smaller aircraft and
shorter range flights in Europe, as 83%
of Textron’s fleet in the region comprises
Light and Very Light jets. The US-based
OEM delivered a total of 23 new jets
to Europe during 2022. Canadian OEM
Bombardier had a 24% market share with
a fleet of 576 jets, a net increase of four
over 2021. The Long Range Global 7500
accounted for 14 new deliveries to Europe
during 2022 – more than any other model.
French OEM Dassault had a fleet of 289
jets and 12% market share, which was
down by 2.7% year-on-year. Embraer’s
European fleet increased by eight units
over 2022 bumping up the Brazilian
OEM’s fleet share to 10% in the region
with a fleet of 254 jets at the end of 2022.
Gulfstream’s year-end 2022 European fleet
comprised 192 jets for a 8% market share,
mainly in the Long Range category. One
notable development during 2022 was
NOTE: Historical fleet data is based on JETNET LLC.
a 42.9% increase in fleet share among the smaller OEMs, led by
new deliveries and pre-owned additions of Very Light and Light
jets from Swiss OEM Pilatus and US-based Cirrus and Eclipse.
The fleet of Corporate Airliners from Airbus have remained fairly
stable year-on-year.
The Light category remains the most popular in Europe with
a 33% market share and 803 aircraft, down just one percent
year-on-year. On the other hand, the Long Range category saw
a near 9% increase in fleet size over 2021 to 494 aircraft. This
was driven by an increasing number of new deliveries of the
Bombardier Global 7500 and Gulfstream G600 models. There
were 363 Medium Jets operating in Europe at the end of 2022,
up by four aircraft from the end of the previous year. The Large
Jet fleet decreased by nine units during 2022 to 363, which was
mainly driven by older models leaving Europe. There was a 4%
increase in the number of Very Light Jets during 2022, with the
fleet reaching 347 units at the end of the year.
The European business jet fleet has remained fairly stable at
around 2,300 jets since the end of 2018, passing the 2,400
aircraft mark by the end of 2022, with Western Europe accounting
for almost half of the fleet with 1,167 aircraft. Southern Europe
had a fleet of 503 jets, with Malta taking a 28% share in that
subregion. Northern Europe and Eastern Europe had fleets of 446
and 312 jets, respectively. Northern Europe was the only subregion
to see a year-on-year decrease in fleet size while the other
sub-regions’ fleets saw increases. The overall European fleet was
up by 1.4% year-on-year with a net growth of 34 aircraft.
There were 93 new deliveries to Europe during 2022, comprising
models across all size categories but quite heavily concentrated
in the Long Range and Light categories. Pre-owned additions
to the region totaled 210, led by Very Light Jets including the
single-engine Vision SF-50 and Eclipse 500, which highlights the
potential of these aircraft to satisfy the demand for short range
and lower cost business jet travel in Europe.
In terms of aircraft models delivered, there were 14 new
Bombardier Global 7500s handed over to Europe during 2022,
highlighting the demand for this new Long Range Jet and
perhaps an indication of renewed demand for long-haul flying
from the region. Gulfstream’s G600 accounted for seven new
deliveries into Europe. Other popular models delivered include
the Pilatus PC-24 (Light), Cessna Citation Latitude (Medium) and
Embraer Praetor 600 (Medium).
The addition of 303 aircraft to the region during the year, together
with the 269 which left Europe, resulted in a net increase of 34
jets. The reductions comprised mainly of older aircraft models
from various OEMs such as the Cessna 525 (CJ1), Dassault
Falcon 900 and Embraer Legacy 600.
As expected, the Western Europe sub-region had the largest
overall fleet, led by Germany with 481 aircraft. Malta recorded the
YE 2022 EUROPE BUSINESS JET FLEET REPORT | 5

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
highest number of net additions with 11 aircraft. Spain recorded
the largest number of net deductions at nine aircraft.
NetJets Europe was the largest European operator at the end of
2022 with a fleet of 108 jets, followed by VistaJet with 64 and the
Luxaviation Group with 62.
In terms of aircraft registration country or location, 72% of the
European fleet was registered locally at the end of 2022. Among
the ten largest markets, the percentage of locally registered
aircraft varied between 37% and 97%, with Portugal having the
highest share. Some 89% of business jets in Germany – the
largest fleet by country in Europe, were locally registered. A total
of 108 aircraft among the ten largest markets were registered in
the United States. Offshore registration remained popular with
the Europe fleet, and a total of 431 jets were as such registered,
led by Malta with a 45% share and the Isle of Man with 23%. The
majority of offshore registered aircraft were in the Large and
Long Range categories.
While many European countries began to fully relax Covid-related
travel restrictions by early 2022, long-haul international travel,
especially to Asia-Pacific, was severely restricted until later in
the year when more borders were opened up. This reduced the
demand for Large and Long Range categories throughout the
year. However, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has further
affected demand and posed additional operational restrictions.
The effects of Brexit and associated restrictions on business jet
flights between the United Kingdom and the European Union are
still being felt by operators and users on both sides.
However, the year-on-year fleet growth and increased number
of deliveries of Long Range Jets is a positive indication of the
anticipated return in demand as more borders are re-opened.
Intra-European travel will benefit from an increasing number of
Very Light and Light jets being added to the fleet, which brings
more choice for cost effective business jet travel in the region.
There were 2,428 business jets operating in Europe at the
total European fleet with 1,167 aircraft, led by Germany with
481, France with 217, Austria with 174 and Switzerland with
152. There was net fleet growth for Austria (ten aircraft)
and France (nine), with the former having the second
largest net fleet increase among all European markets. On
the other hand, there were fleet deductions for Germany
(four), Switzerland (seven) and Luxembourg (one). A net
Southern Europe had a fleet of 503 jets at the end of 2022,
an increase of 22 aircraft year-on-year, more than any other
European subregion. This growth was mainly attributed
to fleet growth in Malta (11 jets), Portugal (eight), Greece
(five) and Italy (four), offset by reductions in other countries
including Spain. The continuing popularity of Malta as an
operator base with an offshore register helped boost its
fleet once again, in particular the Long Range category.
NetJets’ operations out of Portugal also contributed to the
net additions. Net fleet change in percentage terms for
Southern Europe was 4.6% year-on-year.
Northern Europe recorded the only net fleet decrease
among the European subregions and during the year and
ended 2022 with a net decrease of five jets, or 1.1% less
than the end of 2021.There were fleet reductions across
this subregion including Denmark (six), Estonia (five),
Sweden (three), the United Kingdom (three) and Finland
(two), offset by additions in Lithuania (four) and Latvia
(seven). A total of 446 jets were in operation in Northern
Europe at the end of 2022.
The Eastern European fleet increased by a net of eight
aircraft year-on-year with a total of 312 at the end of
2022. Poland’s fleet grew by ten jets, mainly in the Very
Light category, which indicates the potential of increased
domestic and regional demand. There were also net fleet
increases in Hungary (four), the Czech Republic (two) and
Romania (one). Other countries in this subregion had small
reductions in their fleets, including Bulgaria (three), the
Slovak Republic (three), Cyprus (two) and Turkey (one).
The overall European market remained relatively strong
as demand increased for domestic and regional business
jet flights and there are the first signs of recovery in the
long-haul market. The Long Range fleet size increase since
the end of 2020 was almost 20%. However, some countries
and markets have fared worse as the industry progressed
to recover from the pandemic. The ongoing Russia-
Ukraine conflict posed additional challenges for European
operators, and the post-Brexit effect continued to impact
the UK – Europe market.
MAJOR COUNTRY SNAPSHOTS
Germany
Germany remained as Europe’s largest business jet market
in terms of fleet size with 481 aircraft, a net decrease of four
compared to the end of 2021. A total of 15 new deliveries were
made, 53% of which were Light jets. There were also 37 pre-owned
additions from both within and outside of Europe, while 56 jets left
the country for other European operators, or from those outside
of the region. Textron had a 47% share of the German market
at the end of 2022, led by the Citation 525, 525A and 560XL
aircraft families with a combined 27% of the fleet. There were
103 Bombardier jets with German operators, which comprised
products from the Learjet, Challenger and Global families.
Embraer and Dassault had shares of 16% and 6%, respectively. In
line with the overall European fleet trend, Light Jets and Very Light
Jets were the most popular in Germany with a combined 65%
fleet share. Some 89% of business jets based in Germany were
registered locally on the D- register.
The United Kingdom
With a small net deduction of just three aircraft, the United
Kingdom fleet totaled 288 at the end of 2022. Some 15 new
deliveries were made during 2022, as well as well as 54 pre-owned
additions, while 72 jets left the UK, with one-third headed for the
United States. Almost half of the new deliveries were Long Range
Jets. Textron and Bombardier had almost equal shares of the UK
market with 78 and 75 aircraft, which equated to 27% and 26%,
respectively. Gulfstream held a 15% fleet share. The UK is also
home to the largest Boeing BBJ1 fleet in Europe with 11 aircraft.
Long Range jets were the most popular with 88 aircraft – a 31%
fleet share. Light Jets occupied a 21% share and Medium Jets
17%. There were 15 Corporate Airliners in the UK, more than any
other European country. The Long Range Bombardier Global 5000
and 6000 series were the most popular models with a combined
fleet of 27. Only 37% of the UK-based fleet was registered locally,
with 39% on offshore registries.
France
With a net increase of nine jets, the French fleet totaled 217
jets at the end of 2022. Only two new deliveries were made to
France-based operators during the year – a Falcon 8X and a
Citation M2. The fleet growth was mainly accounted for by 31
pre-owned additions which mainly comprised smaller size jets.
Some 24 deductions across all size categories were recorded
during 2022. Textron had a 48% fleet share with 105 aircraft
while local OEM Dassault took a 22% share. Embraer had a 13%
share at the end of 2022. The French fleet, which comprised
almost 50 business jet models, is concentrated on the Very Light
and Light categories, with a combined fleet share of 58% (126
aircraft). The Cessna Citation Mustang is the most popular model
in France with a fleet of 26, followed by the Citation 525 with 23
and Citation 525A with 12. The most popular Dassault product is
the Falcon 7X with a fleet of 12. Some 60% of the France-based
fleet was registered locally, with offshore and other European
registries also relatively popular.
Austria
With 174 jets in the fleet, Austria was Europe’s fourth largest
market at the end of 2022. Fleet movements during 2022
10 | YE 2022 EUROPE BUSINESS JET FLEET REPORT

COUNTRY SNAPSHOTS
comprised five new deliveries, 47 pre-owned additions and 42
deductions. The net fleet increase of ten jets was the joint highest
in Europe. The five new deliveries comprised two Global 7500s,
two Citation XLS Gen 2s and one Citation CJ3+, four of which are
locally registered. The pre-owned additions included a mix of 15
models across all size categories. For the OEMs, Textron had a
37% market share with 64 in the fleet, followed by Bombardier
with 33% and 57 jets. Light Jets were most popular in Austria
with a fleet of 61 and there were also 44 Long Range Jets in the
fleet. A total of 51 business jet models were in the Austria-based
fleet, led by the Citation 560XL series with a fleet of 14, Challenger
300/350 series with 13 and Citation 525A with eight. Some 84%
of the Austria-based fleet was registered locally while 10% was on
offshore registries.
Switzerland
There were 152 business jets operating in Switzerland at the end
of 2022, down seven aircraft year-on-year. Five new deliveries
and 28 pre-owned additions were offset by 40 deductions
during the year. The five new deliveries comprised two Pilatus
PC-24s (Light), one Phenom 300E (Light), one Citation Latitude
(Medium) and one Long Range Falcon 8X. Textron again had
the largest market share in Switzerland with 43 jets (28%), with
Dassault taking a 26% share and Bombardier 17%. The Swiss
fleet is somewhat more focused on larger sized jets, with the
48 Long Range Jets accounting for a 31% fleet share. Other
popular categories included Light (37 jets) and Large (29). The
most popular among the 49 models based in Switzerland are
the Falcon 7X (14 aircraft), Citation Mustang (ten), PC-24 (nine)
and Falcon 2000 EX (nine). Just 47% of the Swiss-based fleet is
registered locally.
Malta
Malta has become an increasingly popular base for business
jet operators in recent years, mainly due to the availability of
offshore registration with associated favorable tax structure, as
well as operational flexibility. This is evidenced by the relatively
high number of Large and Long Range jets based in the country.
The Maltese fleet grew year-on-year by 11 jets to a total of 143
by the end of 2022. A total of 12 new deliveries were made
during 2022, eight of which were Global 7500s, with the majority
operated by VistaJet. There were also 22 pre-owned additions and
23 deductions during the year, again with an emphasis on larger
sized jets. Bombardier had a 70% fleet share in Malta with 100 jets
from the Global and Challenger families. Gulfstream had a 10%
share with 15 jets based in Malta. Long Range Jets accounted for
42% of the fleet, with Large and Medium jets each taking a 21%
share. Perhaps not surprisingly, Bombardier products occupied
the top five spots for the most popular business jet models in
Malta, led by 26 Global 6000s, 23 Challenger 300/350 and 16
Global 7500s. Some 88% of the Maltese fleet is registered locally,
which is considered an offshore registration.
Portugal
Home to NetJets Europe’s operations, Portugal had a fleet of 125
jets at the end of 2022, an increase of eight over the previous
year. Of the 12 new deliveries made, 11 were handed over to
NetJets and comprised six Citation Latitudes, three Phenom
300s, one Challenger 350 and one Global 6500. A Vision SF50
Very Light Jet was delivered to a private operator. There were
also five pre-owned additions and nine deductions during the
year. Textron, Bombardier and Embraer were the top three OEMs
in the Portuguese market with fleet shares of 44%, 26% and 19%,
COUNTRY SNAPSHOTS
respectively. Light Jets were most popular in Portugal with a fleet
of 53, followed by Medium Jets with 42. Some 25 business jet
models were operated in Portugal, led by the Citation Latitude
(25), Phenom 300 (20) and Citation 560XL (18). Portugal had one
of the highest proportions of locally registered business jets in
Europe with 97% of the fleet on the CS- register.
Turkey
Turkey’s business jet fleet size reduced by just one aircraft during
2022 for a total of 117 at year end. Only one new jet was delivered
during the year – a Falcon 8X to charter company Setair. There
were 15 pre-owned additions of mainly Large and Long Range
jets, as well as 17 deductions. Bombardier was the top OEM in
Turkey with a fleet share of 36%, ahead of Textron with 28% and
Dassault and Gulfstream with 14% each. The Turkish fleet was
concentrated around Large and Long Range jets with a combined
fleet share of 57%, with the Light and Medium categories having
shares of 20% and 17%, respectively. Turkey’s fleet was quite
widespread among 45 aircraft models, with each model having
comparably small numbers. The Challenger 605, Gulfstream
G450 and Citation 560XL series were jointly the most popular
models with seven aircraft each. Turkey’s locally registered fleet
proportion was relatively high at 84% with just 9% of the fleet were
registered offshore.
Italy
With a net gain of four aircraft and a 2022 year-end fleet of 112
jets, the Italian business jet fleet ranked ninth among European
countries. There were six new deliveries to Italy during 2022 –
four Gulfstream Long Range Jets and two Citation CJ4 Light
Jets. The 14 pre-owned additions and 16 deductions from the
fleet comprised a mix of aircraft models across all categories.
Textron captured the largest OEM market share in Italy with 47%
(53 aircraft). The other major OEMs Bombardier, Dassault and
Gulfstream had fairly even fleet shares of around 15%. Embraer
was less well represented in Italy with just two aircraft – one
Legacy 650 and one Phenom 100. The Hawker 400 was the most
popular model in Italy with ten aircraft, followed by the Citation
525, Citation 500/501 and Gulfstream G550 with seven each.
Some 67% of the Italian fleet was registered locally, with 17%
offshore and 7% on the US N register.
Spain
Rounding out the top ten largest fleets in Europe were the 78 jets
operated in Spain. The year-end 2022 fleet saw a net decrease of
nine aircraft over the previous year – the most of any European
country. There were few additions to the Spanish fleet during 2022
with just one PC-24 as the only new delivery made, and only five
pre-owned additions. On the other hand, there were 15 deductions
from the Spain-based fleet during the year, nine of which headed
to other European countries. Textron accounted for 55% of the
fleet with 43 jets, followed by Bombardier and Gulfstream, each
with a 17% share. Light Jets were the most popular in Spain with
28 aircraft and a 36% fleet share, followed by Very Light Jets
with 21% and Long Range Jets with 19%. Cessna Citation family
models were most common in Spain, including the Citation 550
(nine aircraft), Citation 525 (eight), Citation Mustang (six) and
Citation 560XL (five). Three-quarters of the Spain-based fleet was
registered locally, with the remaining fleet registered offshore
(8%), on the US register (3%) and on registries (14%).
LUXAVIATION CEO
SEES DEFICIENCIES
IN SEEMINGLY
BUOYANT MARKET
By Mia Yao
Patrick Hansen
CEO, Luxaviation
14 | YE 2022 EUROPE BUSINESS JET FLEET REPORT

LUXAVIATION
Luxaviation CEO Patrick Hansen is predicting a strong and buoyant
business aviation market in 2023, despite the fact that growing
costs are bringing low margins to the sector.
“I’m sure that for the next six to twelve months, people will continue
to live on the buoyancy and the structural issue of the market,” said
Hansen, adding that people are living in a certain time when they
don’t see the deficiencies.
The major deficiency, he says, are the extremely low profit margins
due to increasing costs and regulatory issues, which have been
witnessed across all regions.
He also believes that certain investors should check growth
numbers and put messages of growth and buoyancy in perspective
as they compare with Covid time numbers.
“Over the last two years, a lot of people are living off
announcements of significant growth. It was very easy to grow very
much when there was little activity in 2020,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot
of extremely buoyant messages coming out from various industry
players. I think there should be reality checks behind it when it
comes to the true numbers.”
“For the business aviation market in general, 2022 was a good year
except for the last two months where you could see a slowdown.
Some business owners might see their business in a much better
light than what it actually is.”
Since it was founded in 2008, Luxaviation has made major
acquisitions including Fairjets, Abelag, Unijet, and ExecuJet, and
has expanded its FBO networks in Germany, the US, and Australia.
In 2021, the Luxembourg-based company announced a partnership
with Lilium for future operations of its seven-seat Lilium Jet.
Looking into the future, Hansen said the company will continue
its path of growing the global FBO network as well as expanding
its activities in the US market although COVID-19 has slowed the
company’s business and expansion process over the past few years.
Talking about the company’s thoughts on the emerging advanced
air mobility (AAM) industry and the billions of dollars that have
been invested in it, Hansen said it is only a matter of time for
commercial air taxis to become a reality.
“I’m a firm believer that sooner or later AAM will become a reality.”
I’ve seen a lot of extremely
buoyant messages coming
out from various industry
players. I think there should
be reality checks behind it
when it comes to the true
numbers.”
MARKET UPDATES
OPERATOR OVERVIEW
With a combined fleet of 588 jets, the top 20 operators in Europe
accounted for 24% of the total European fleet at the end of 2022.
Portugal-based NetJets Europe had by far the largest fleet in
the region with 108 aircraft, followed by VistaJet with 64 and
Luxaviation Group with 62. A further seven operators had fleets
of 20 jets or more.
Bombardier and Textron were the most popular manufacturers
among the top ten European operators, with fleets of 132 and
148, respectively. Embraer had 62 aircraft with these operators,
followed by Dassault with 46 and Gulfstream with 19.
The majority of large European operators had mixed fleets
with aircraft from four or five OEMs, with the clear exception
of VistaJet and GlobeAir, which VistaJet operated exclusively
Bombardier aircraft and GlobeAir operated exclusively Textron
aircraft. Luxaviation’s fleet has been expanding both in size and
aircraft variety and at the end of 2022 it operated aircraft models
from seven different OEMs.
In terms of size categories, the majority of top ten European
operators each had a mix of aircraft of at least four categories.
The Light Jet Category was most popular with 111 aircraft among
the top ten operators, and featured in seven of the top ten fleets.
NetJets Europe was the largest operator of Light Jets with 44 in
its fleet and 68% of ProAir Aviation’s fleet comprised Light Jets.
The top ten European operators had a total of 110 Long Range
Jets at the end of 2022, and this category also featured in almost
all of the top ten fleets. VistaJet was the largest operator of Long
Range Jets with a fleet of 37, which equated to 58% of its fleet.
The almost equal popularity of both Light and Long Range jets
among the largest operators further supports the fact that there is
great potential in developing domestic and intra-Europe markets
with Light Jets while new generation Long Range Jets allow
operators to expand their long-haul reach to satisfy clients’ needs.
The Large and Medium categories were operated by eight of the
top ten, with ProAir and GlobeAir being the two operators without
aircraft in either of these categories. Corporate Airliners were
flown by just two of the top ten operators, while Very Light Jets
featured among five of the top ten.
Looking at the local European registers, the German
register (D-) is by far the most popular with 451 aircraft
at the end of 2022, a small decrease of just seven
aircraft compared to the end of 2021. Some 94% of
German registered business jets in Europe were based
in Germany. The Austrian (OE-) register had 203 aircraft
at the end of 2022, up 5% year-on-year while six aircraft
were added to the Portuguese (CS-) register during the
year to reach 138. Conversely, the number of business
jets on the United Kingdom (G-) reduced by some 27%
since the end of 2020 to just 117 aircraft, driven by the
effects of Brexit and associated changes in regulations
on business jet operations for UK-registered jets in
Europe. Fleet sizes of the remaining European registers
have remained fairly constant for the past three years.
Germany had the largest business jet fleet in Europe
at the end of 2022 with a fleet of 481, with some 89%
registered locally – one of the highest shares of local
registrations among the top ten European markets. The
remaining fleet share was registered in the US, offshore
and other jurisdictions with a fairly even split. A total of
288 business jets were based in the United Kingdom at
the end of 2022, with just 37% registered under the UK
G- registration. Apart from the post-Brexit market, the
high proportion of Long Range and Large Jets meant
offshore registrations would be more advantageous in
terms of tax, while US registration would be beneficial
when transacting these aircraft, and thus almost 40%
of the UK fleet was registered offshore and 12% in the
US. Some 60% of the 217-strong France-based fleet
was registered locally, as were 84% of the Austriabased
fleet of 174 jets. Both France and Austria had
fleets which were focused on smaller sized jets, for
which local registrations were more popular.

Offshore registries offer numerous benefits to business jet
owners and operators. The first is ease of flight operations
– offshore registered aircraft are much less restricted when
operating into certain countries or regions. This is not so relevant
for most European operators, especially when flying within the
European Union; although it does bring more convenience if
flying to some overseas locations. The advantages of a flexible
tax structure is perhaps most attractive reason for an offshore
registry to be selected, which means that high end jets in the
Large, Long Range and Corporate Airliner categories are most
commonly registered offshore. Among all offshore registered jets
in Europe, some 61% are in these three categories. In addition,
the level of privacy offered by offshore registries is also preferred
by owners.
Malta has become an increasingly popular offshore registry. The
number of Malta registered jets (9H-) increased by 30% since the
end of 2020 and reached 193 by the end of 2022. Malta has also
become a preferred location as an operator base and company
headquarters, led by fast expanding operators such as VistaJet.
The clear advantage of a flexible tax structure is highlighted by the
fact that the 67% of the European business jets registered in Malta
AIRCRAFT REGRISTRY OVERVIEW
Other offshore registries available in Europe include the Isle
of Man (M-), San Marino (T7-) and Guernsey (2-) which had
a combined 182 Europe-based jets registered, or 42% of the
offshore registered fleet in Europe. These registries have also
proven popular with owners and operators outside of Europe,
particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. For the Europe-based fleet,
the number of San Marino registered jets has been on the rise
since the end of 2020, with a significant 58% increase during
2022 to 49 aircraft. The number of Guernsey registered jets based
in Europe increased by 50% year-on-year to 36 by the end of 2022.
On the other hand, the number of Isle of Man registered jets in
Europe has decresed by almost 13% since the end of 2020.
The traditionally popular offshore registries from Bermuda (VP-B
and VQ-B), the Cayman Islands (VP-C) and Aruba (P4-) had minor
presence in the offshore registered fleet in Europe. There were just
56 Europe-based jets across these three registries at the end of
2022, which has been quite consistent over the past three years.
Some 38% of offshore registered business jets in Europe were
in the Long Range category, 18% Large Jets and 5% Corporate
Airliners. The smaller size categories took the minor shares in
offshore registration, with the Very Light category taking an 8%
share with just 36 jets.
The United States (N) register is also popular in the European
fleet, with a 14% year-on-year increase since the end of 2021 to
139 aircraft. N- registered aircraft have the advantage of ease of
transaction compared to some local registers.
SUPPORTING
MODERN TIME
MACHINES
Business jets are often described by owners as today’s time machines.
Time is often at a premium for the influential customers that use the aircraft,
so availability and reliability is essential.
38 | YE 2022 EUROPE BUSINESS JET FLEET REPORT

SPONSORED CONTENT
With more than 3,600 Rolls-Royce powered business jets in service
worldwide, the company is the leading engine supplier in business
aviation. Its top priority is to provide an extraordinary level of
service that exceeds their customers’ expectations.
technicians, who rank among the best in their profession, travel to
the respective aircraft to perform special and complex maintenance
tasks, often to rescue customers from an aircraft-on-ground
situation and ensure clients make their next planned flight.
More than half of Rolls-Royce’s Business Aviation clients have
a fleet of one aircraft, which means they typically do not have a
comprehensive department to perform maintenance on the engines
themselves.
“One key differentiator for Rolls-Royce is that we have a separate
and dedicated Business Aviation unit,” says Megha Bhatia, VP Sales
& Marketing, Business Aviation. “This unit includes its own services
organization - purposely set up to assist the distinct needs of our
clients, which differ from those in commercial aviation.”
It goes without saying that all the moving parts within this services
organization – from the Business Aviation Availability Centre,
logistics and spare parts to On-Wing services - must work like a
perfectly tuned machine.
Rolls-Royce’s Business Aviation Availability Centre looks after over
8,000 engines in service worldwide, and it operates 24 hours a day
7 days a week. All Engine Health Monitoring data is assessed at
the Availability Centre and from here the company deploys teams
of service engineers, logistics specialists, fleet and maintenance
planners and operations specialists to ensure the smooth operation
of the worldwide fleet. In the rare case where an issue with the
engine prevents the customer from flying, these experts aim to
solve a routine issue anywhere in the world in under 24 hours.
While there is no problem for predictable, routine tasks, which can
be managed at any of our 75 Authorized Service Centers globally,
it gets more challenging if a customer needs help in a remote
location. Fortunately, Rolls-Royce created the On-Wing Services
team to resolve such problems for their unique cliental. These
The On-Wing Services team, which forms the spearhead of the
organization for quick responses and special missions, is a vital
part of Rolls Royce’s dedicated global service network. The team is
composed of 65 highly qualified technicians, which are strategically
placed around the globe This ensures faster response times and
minimizes AOG downtime wherever our customers are in the world.
Top priority is to provide an
extraordinary level of service
that exceeds their customers’
expectations.”
And with Rolls-Royce’s pioneering CorporateCare Enhanced service
programme these activities are already covered at no additional cost.
The programme offers substantial financial and operational value to
customers, such as increased asset value and liquidity, mitigating
maintenance cost risk and protection against unforeseen costs
and unscheduled events anywhere in the world. Increased aircraft
availability, reduced management burden, full risk transfer, direct
priority access to the Rolls-Royce services infrastructure and remote
site assistance are further benefits for the customers.
“This outstanding service is recognized by Rolls-Royce customers
all over the world. We are really proud of having been ranked
number one in AIN’s Product Support Surveys for two consecutive
years now. This is really important for us, as the feedback comes
directly from our customers. We want to ensure we’re continually
striving to better our customers’ experience and exceeding their
expectations” Megha adds.
MARKET UPDATES
ENGINE OVERVIEW
At the end of 2022, there were 4,949 engines installed on 2,428 business jets in the European fleet, which was a
0.4% increase over the 4,927 engines at end of 2021.
While the European fleet size was up by 1.4% year-on-year, the
number of installed engines only increased by 0.4%. This was
mainly accounted for by the movements of tri-jets (Dassault
Falcon series), with just four new deliveries and 24 aircraft
leaving the Europe fleet.
Pratt & Whitney maintained its position as the dominant business
Jet OEM in Europe with a 0.6% net increase in the number of
installed engines to 1,928, which equated to a market share of
39%. Some 11 engine families from Pratt & Whitney powered more
than 30 aircraft models across the majority of size categories.
Some 40% of Pratt & Whitney engines were installed on Light Jets,
21% on Long Range Jets and 16% on Very Light Jets.
There were 879 Williams International engines installed across
eight aircraft models in the Europe fleet, with a year-on-year net
increase of 21 engines. The Williams International FJ44 powered
fleet comprised Very Light and Light jets including 235 Citation
525/525A jets and the increasing popular PC-24, of which
56 were in service at the end of 2022. Some 61% of installed
Williams International engines powered Light Jets. The FJ33
engine powered the single-engine Vision SF50, of which 19 were
in operation in Europe at the end of 2022.
Rolls-Royce had a 17% engine market share in Europe, with its
836 installed engines focused on the Large and Long Range
categories, including the majority of Bombardier and Gulfstream
jets in these categories, as well as the Legacy 600/650. More
than three-quarters of the 836 engines were installed on Long
Range Jets. The number of engines installed increased by 26
during 2022.
Some 780 Honeywell engines were installed on 23 aircraft
models in Europe at the end of 2022, with a focus on the Medium
category. However, there was a year-on-year decrease of 69
engines. This was driven by older jets powered by the TFE731
engine leaving Europe or being retired, including early build
Falcons, Citations and Learjets. There were 230 of the newer
HTF7000 engines installed on the Challenger 300/350, Legacy
450/500, Gulfstream G280 and Citation Longitude.
General Electric saw an almost 10% increase in the number of
its installed engines during 2022. The 410 installed engines on
the Europe fleet powered 17 aircraft models from Light Jets
to Corporate Airliners. The year-on-year increase was mainly
accounted for by new deliveries of the Passport-powered Global
7500 Long Range Jets, of which 38 are now in service in Europe.
However, the largest size category for General Electric in Europe
is the Medium category.
CFM International’s installed engine share, which comprised
solely of Corporate Airliners, decreased slightly as a number of
BBJs left the European market in 2022.
