25 years of pizza(zz)
Avalon institution Cranzgot’s is 25 years
old this year – and it’s same, same, but
different for the locals’ pizza place.
“I used to bring the kids here when they
were younger,” says Lara, the manager of
Cranzgot’s. “The different owners
over the years have usually lived
in Avalon and we’re all about
collaboration and community
these days.”
The origins of Cranzgot’s
are South African
though. A pizzeria started
in Plettenberg Bay in 1981,
that was known for its
pizza, its atmosphere and
the big wooden tables that
people carved their names in.
Sound familiar?
“Philip Golombick moved to
Avalon at the end of the ’90s and
brought his ideas with him; to
this day we retain a South African
influence in the menu.

“We’re not an Italian pizza restaurant, we’re
unique. We have ingredients such as pepperdew,
which is a chilli-sweetened roasted
capsicum.
“The menu doesn’t change a great deal, but
we do have specials which are new concoctions,
such as the recent Club Pesto, and we
also bring back old favourites by popular
demand. And there are specials such as the
CCC (chicken, cranberry and camembert) that
we bring out for special occasions.”
Cranzgot’s has had music off and on over
the years, but Lara has honed the
brand as Live @ Cranny’s, with
local up-and-coming acts on a
Wednesday evening and established
bands on a Friday.
It’s common for people
to get up and dance, and
Cranzgot’s has a relaxed
but lively atmosphere.
In terms of local collaboration,
Lara works closely
with Chill Bar in Avalon,
only serving their ice cream.
While beers are brewed locally
at The Avalon Brewery (formerly
Trust Tree). Cranzgot’s also help
sponsor Avalon Soccer Club and are
always looking for new local staff.
As for the 25th anniversary, Lara has more
innovation planned.
“Stay tuned for some great new things happening
at Crangot’s. We have Facebook and
Instagram pages that are constantly being
updated, and there will be plenty for locals to
enjoy this year.”
