‘Shotcrete’ concerns
The Avalon Preservation Association
(APA) has made its
concerns known about the
Council ‘shotcreting’ work
that had damaged the wellknown
and loved, Heritagelisted
geological feature on
the corner of Wanawong Road
at North Avalon. Council said
the embankment was identified
as unstable and required
remediation after a landslip
caused by a major storm
event in March 2022. Council
said it engaged geotechnical
experts and academics
with experience in heritage
aspects which recommended
shotcreting as the most appropriate
way to stabilise the
rockface for road safety which
would also maintain the geo
heritage aspect and balanced
aesthetic concerns. (The APA
says it thinks Council may
have achieved two of its three
aims.) Council says it has now
secured funding to apply a
surface treatment to ameliorate
the shotcrete. It’s hoped
this will deter potential graffitists
who have tagged another
shotcrete site south of
the Bilgola Bends roundabout.
