“A Newfoundlander in Canada” by Alan Doyle
The Evergreen library has many different types of books. We have fiction, history, biography,
politics, wellness, self-help and military. We also have books on Canada and some of local
interest. For this review, I ventured into the biography section and found a book by Alan Doyle,
the lead singer for the band, Great Big Sea. What an enjoyable read!
Alan takes us along on the band’s first Canadian tour. They drove from Newfoundland to
British Columbia, performing in big cities and small towns along the way. We see Canada
through his eyes as he is exploring our country for the first time. Alan tells human stories about
the people they meet, many of them Newfoundlanders, hoping to connect with home through
music.
We also discover what it is like to be a musician on the road. They travelled in a van,
stopping for food at fast food restaurants and convenience stores. They chose the most
reasonable accommodations they could find, leading to some interesting encounters with the
locals.
You will be entertained hearing about performing for the Queen, opening for Barney the
Dinosaur, and encountering a baby on a plane trip home. You won’t be disappointed spending a
few hours with this wonderful Canadian storyteller, Alan Doyle. His passion for Newfoundland
and the people and places in the rest of Canada are heartwarming.
