Europe votes,
as two
neighbourhood
wars rage
Both the war in Ukraine and the Israeli-Gaza conflict
could escalate before the June elections — but outside
of the Baltics and Poland, most EU voters seem more
attuned to domestic concerns.

Two major wars have broken out in the EU neighbourhood
since the last European Parliament elections in
2019 — but voters are more likely to be swayed by domestic
issues than high tension on the international
front.
The Ukraine war had already begun long before the
2019 EU vote, when Russia first invaded Ukraine in
2014. And the Arab-Israeli conflict goes back to the
last century.
But Russian president Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion
of Ukraine in 2022 shocked Europe, bringing
artillery and tank battles on a scale not seen since
World War Two, and Kremlin threats of nuclear
strikes against Nato. And a new Gaza war broke out
on 7 October 2023 with the biggest pogrom since the
Holocaust, prompting Israel to kill tens of thousands
