The Star Thursday April 18 2024 A raft of testing was done, including blood and urine testing, radiography, ultrasound and MRI ( which gave us our diagnosis of severe pachymeningitis and evidence of encephalitis). Yogi was an intensive hospital patient requiring constant observation, recording of vitals including blood pressure, intravenous fluids, medications, regular glucose readings to keep his diabetes in check and assisted feeding to keep up his strength. He spent his days with us and his nights YOGI Yogi, an elderly, blind 11 year old Sydney Silkie, was recently diagnosed with a rare neurological disease, GME ( Granulomeningeal encephalopathy). I may only diagnose GME every couple of years and diagnosis requires an MRI and often spinal fluid analysis, so not an easy disease to work up. Yogi presented for sudden onset focal seizures, head twitching, unable to walk, circling and severe depression ( he just wanted to head press as though he had an extreme migraine.) He was mainly affected down his left side, with a head tilt and facial Yogi and his mum. paralysis to the left. He could often become floppy, collapsed but then would stand up. His appetite had decreased and being a Type 1 Diabetic made this case complicated. He waxed and waned with fevers and appetite. He would crash and then improve. Yogi the patient at MMH vets Yogi undergoing MRI at the Afterhours Clinic. It was a lot for Yogi but he never complained, allowed us to do what we needed to do as he was determined to get better. Our nurses loved caring for him as an inpatient. Miraculously this wee dog responded to the heavy medications required to treat this disease, as well as dealing with the hurdles of being a diabetic. His South African owners would do absolutely anything for “ Joggie” ( original name is Joachim, meaning established by God). Hes taking prednisone and cyclosporine to treat the GME and handling these drugs well. Hes also on twice daily glargine insulin, eye medications for dry eye, seizure medication and Panadol. Hes such a trouper taking all these and every week I can see improvement. Luckily he loves his tucker and adores his mum and dad, who he has completely wrapped around his wee paw. This case highlights the fact that every patient ( owner willing of course) deserves a chance of surviving, even if the odds are stacked against them being elderly and having a severe brain inflammatory disease - not an every day disease at all. Yogi may have only weighed 4kg but he has fought to get better every step of the way. Your vet is so proud of you Yogi and I can’t wait to see more improvement when im back from holiday. The memorial, which commemorates the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 and subsequent conflicts, returned as the service’s focal point last year following an extensive restoration project. Thursday’s programme begins after veterans meet at the Worcester St bridge to parade with the New Zealand Army Band to the square at 6.15am. The service starts at 6.30am.
