32 North RURAL LIFE Canterbury News, May 2, 2024 Flock sheep competitionresults Tom and James Maxwell, of Maxwelton, Amberley, took top honours in the hogget, Hurunui Champion of Champions A&P District’s Flock competition. Jim Burrows, of Glenlake Farm Ltd, Amberley, won the twotooth championofchampions award, while the Amberley Show District won champion A&P District award. In spite of the dry conditions, North Canterbury farmers showed how they can produce excellent stock under pressure. Stock was judged in each of the show districts over four days —Hawarden, Amuri, Cheviot, and Amberley —which culminated in the Champion of Champions Day, at which the winners of each District Day competed headtohead for the grand title. Rural Change’s wellbeing programme has funded farmers, and the wider rural community, into over 529 sessions to jump the public mental health queue —all thanks to philanthropic donationsover the past 5years. Founder Elle Perriam says when they started Will to Live in 2019 the original mission was to change the stigma surrounding mental health in the rural sector. ‘‘It grew into acharitable trust from so many donations we received, and we passed those on to those in need inthe form of funded counselling,’’ she says . Elle says it is now time to sign off and shift her course to her career, after dedicatingfive yearstothe mission. Over 473 people have applied for funding since Will to Live Charitable Trust launched Rural Change, with afurther 98 people completing the Anxiety Unloaded programme. ‘‘Rural Change opened up conversations about mental health among awhole new group of farmers, and growers, which will have alasting effect on the health and wellbeingoffarming families and their communities,’’ Neil Bateup, Rural Support National Chair, says. ‘‘Rural Support has been proud to work alongside Elle and her team and are immensely grateful that they are continuingtosupport our rural communities by passing over the wealth of knowledge, and resources. Funded sessions to the 60 people on the programme areopen for them to use until May 15, and health professional invoices in by June 1, are to be paid by June 30. SPORT North Canterbury News, May 2, 2024 33 The Ohoka Club is riding the crest of awave RUGBY Collated BY PETER WILLIAMS The Ohoka Club which for the last few decades, could usually be found towards the bottom end of any Division 1points tables, is scaling dizzy heights. It remains unbeaten after five matches this season in the CanterburyCountry Luisetti Seeds senior rugby competition. New coach, Murray Henderson, has the team humming. The wins have brought anewfound confidence, and belief, within the team enabling it to close out tight matches. To add to the buoyant feeling around Mandeville, both its Division 2and Colts teams are also unbeaten. For the first time, Oxford has fielded ateam in the 15aside Premier Reserve section of the CanterburyWomen's competition and it too is unbeaten to date. This week, the Oxford Div 1 team plays on Thursday night at Prebbleton, while Ohoka puts its unbeaten record on the line against Darfield on Friday night at Darfield. Ohoka vSpringston Ohoka was made to work over time before getting the better of Springston in its 3419 victory on Saturday. Played in ideal conditions at Mandeville, it took 25 minutes before any points were scored, with play seesawing with neither team gaining any control. Scoring was subsequently sparked by Ohoka tighthead prop Zane Paterson who carried the ball up 10 metres before off loading to loosie Mac Kaitao who crashed over to score. Springston was quick to respond —maybe the cry of its ‘back to work boys’ from one of the coaching staff spurred them on — and atry was scored, effectively from the kick off. Following apenalty from its ace kicker Scott Allin, Ohoka went into half time with a10point lead, after Allin scored abrilliant solo try. This started 25 metres out when he found achasm in the Springston defence. The finish of the half for Springston was not helped when it was down a player following ayellow card. Thoughts Ohoka would use the margin to launch total domination did not eventuate. Springston scored awell executed try through its back line in the opening exchanges, before Ohoka could get their hands on the ball again. When it did, atry to first five eight Paddy McCallum eventuated, after several charges at the line. True to the script, Springston responded with atry and the teams went into the final five minutes with only afive point separation. Enter Scott Allin again, who eased the pressure with a50metre, on the angle, penalty. Siasoi Fifita scored atry in injury time after entering the back line from the blind side at speed. Rakaia vAshley After adisappointing performance against Southbridge the previous week, it was important for Ashley to start the game well and keepthe momentum going. It took just 10 minutes for Louis James to score from abreak down the blind by Braxton Taua, who ably converted. Ashley’s first half was built on playing the game at pace with quick lineouts, attack from depth and scrum dominance, building a base from which to attack . Asecond converted try just before half time came after a concerted counter attack from Matt Couch, relishing the space on the wing in amanofthematch performance, wrong footing multiple defenders before linking with Luke Gold who scored. Ashley led 153 at halftime. Shortly after the break, a counterattack led by Nick Sim, delivered front foot ball at the ensuing ruck enabling Matt Couch to again wrong foot a number of Rakaia defenders before offloading short of the line to Corbin Mechen. Changes made by Rakaia created atopsy turvy affair. Rakaia starting to make more meterage through the forwards, and scored two tries. With the score closed to 2215itbecame a dour, but close affair, with Rakaia reduced to uncontested scrums nullifying Ashleys scrum dominance. Oxford vLincoln Slick work by the Lincoln backs saw the visitors out to a12point lead before Oxford realised it needed to put its best foot forward if it was going to be a serious chance to win the match. Halfway through the first half, a bit of individual brilliance from leftwinger, Ratu Uluiviti put Oxford back in touch, when he chipped ahead and regathered his own kick to score near the corner. Two more tries to the visitors put Lincoln out to a247 lead, as halftime approached, but a timely touchdown by Jesse Houston narrowed the lead to 2414. Led by amanofthematch performance by Rob Tucker, and some strong work from Joseph Lockwood, Oxford started to gain the upper hand in the forwards, while Houston underlined his invaluable versatility by moving from No 8tosecond fiveeighth, and inside him, the inexperienced pivot, Harry Muir rose to the occasion, directing play well. It was rewarded with a try to full back Jack Muir and when halfback Seamus Smyth added apenalty goal the teams were locked up at 2424. Lincoln hit back immediately with aconverted try of its own and it was not until the 75th minute that replacement, Stu Feary, finished off agood team try and the scores were again all locked up. Both teams had chances to win the game but in the end had to settle for adraw. Oxford 31 (Ratu Uluiviti, Jesse Houston, Jack Muir, Stu Feary, tries, Seamus Smyth 4 conversions, one penalty) drew with Lincoln 31. Prebbleton vHurunui Aclinical display of attacking rugby saw Prebbleton sprint away to an early 285 lead it would never relinquish. Hurunui knew it had to respond and did so when replacement flanker, Salem Christian, injected some real dominance into its running game, to score twice early in the second half. However, Prebbleton regained its momentum and extended its lead to 25 points, through two wellworked tries out wide. Intent on staying in the fight, Hurunui closed the gap again, this time Josh Cavanagh finding space through the middle off abrilliant line. Then two minutes later, Louie Bethell, made a50metre dash from aruck, leaving aclutch of Prebbleton defenders in his wake. Needing to score twice more, Hurunui tried to spark an attack from deep in its own half, but agrubber kick went awry and Prebbleton scored at the other end, effectively sealing the win. Josh Cavanagh was pivotal for Hurunui, sparking his sides late rally and was resolute on defence while Salem Christians huge shift off the bench earned him manofthematch honours. Prebbleton 47 beat Hurunui 31 (Jono Schwass, Salem Christian (2), Josh Cavanagh, Louie Bethell tries; Matt Hickey, and Logan Topp (2) conversions. Woodend vKaiapoi An injurystruck Woodend squad competed well in the first half, trailing by just 19 points at the break, but in the second stanza Kaiapoi showed no neighbourly love and indulged in a10try scoring fest to run away with the match. Woodend 0 lost to Kaiapoi 64 (Leo McConchie, Taine JacobLawson (2),Lance Taylor (2), Sid Coster, Zach Andrews, David Cook, Kafu Misuata ,Ollie Taylor tries; JacobsLawson 7conversions. GlenmarkCheviot vHornby It was asimilar scoreline at Omihi where the combined side put Hornby to the sword. Both teams traded blows early on and it took some time for Glenmark Cheviot to break down Hornbys defence. Once the first try was scored the floodgates opened somewhat, although Hornby kept attacking. Stand out performer Harry Murray bagged himself four tries on his debut at home, his pace and ability to beat defenders was poetry in motion. Nick Hyde burgled acouple of tries off the back of some immense line out mauls. The GlenmarkCheviot forwards were incredibly strong up front, laying agreat platform for the likes of Murray and Mike Keane to continually make metres. As always, Jordy Grays impact changed the momentum of the game when he came on after 40 minutes. GlenmarkCheviot had too much firepower in the end and came away with asolid win. GlenmarkCheviot 67 (Harry Murray (4) Nick Hyde (2) Henry Power, Andrew Zuppicich, Caleb Beck, Jordy Gray tries; Beck 6 conversions beat Hornby 7. Southern vSaracens Adepleted Saracens travelled to Hinds looking for its first win of the season. But it conceded early points. Down 12nil, the team finally clicked into gear and Hadrian Jackson scored. Saracens best period of rugby followed, but it couldn't convert it into points and trailed 720 at the break. Southern blew out to ahandy lead early in the second half, but Saracens hit back with acracking try to Toby Ashby. Cocoach, Dion Jones also got on the scoresheet. To its credit, Saracens, with 10 players missing through injury, was able to compete for long periods of the game, but firstup tackles let it down. Experienced forwards, Nathan Goodwin and Willy Kerr stood out. Exciting colt Tobias Christini had astrong game, while Caleb Pomare Edwards and Hadrian Jackson were strong in the backs.
