Tourism important
This week marks the start of Term 2for
schools, which means areturn to the
winter uniforms and areminder that we
are now definitely heading into the colder
season.
Ihope all parents across Waimakariri
had an enjoyable time with their children
at home for the past couple of weeks and
congratulate you all on managingthe
school holidays, particularly if you were
juggling work at the same time.
Wishing all teachers and school staff
across the electorate the best of luck and
good health for the term ahead.
Ienjoyed visiting the team at Wellbeing
North Canterbury recently to catch up with
them about the incredible work they have
been doing.
We are very fortunate to have such a
dedicated group of professionals here in
Waimakariri providing avast range of free
social and community services.
From parenting programmes and advice
for grandparents and other caregivers, to
support for young people and families
struggling with the cost of living, the team
at Wellbeing North Canterburyhave a
wealth of knowledgeand expertiseand I
know they provide avery valuable service
to many in our community.
As Associate Minister for Health Ihad
the pleasure of speaking tothe National
Rural Health Conference, which was
attended by more than 450 rural health
professionals, as well as speakingatthe
Local Government New Zealand
conference in my role as Minister for
Tourism and Hospitality about the
importance of tourism for local
communities.
As the electorate MP for Waimakariri, I
am familiar with how localgovernment
works, having worked with the local
council on many issues during my time
across arange of issues that come up, from
speed limits to bridgereplacements.
Both central and local government have
an important role in welcoming and
supporting tourism, and of course tourism
and hospitality businesses also benefit
from the decisions that central and local
government make on mixed use
infrastructure, which is used by both
visitors and local communities.
We need to attract more visitors to
regional and rural New Zealand, and this
includes the Waimakariri, so it’s great to
see people working in this space like the
Oxford Dark Skies advocates but also our
amazinghospitality venues.
Iknow Kaiapoi in particular is a
drawcard for domestic visitors due to the
efforts beingmade in this space.
Lastly, it was good to attend anumber of
Anzac services across the Waimakaririthis
year at Ohoka, Woodend, Cust and West
Eyreton.
With so many services in the electorate
over two days it is impossible to attend
them all, but Iwould like to thank all those
who organised the various events this year.
It was great to see suchastrong
attendance at all the services, including a
large contingent of young people.
While those with lived experience of
World Wars are in increasingly fewer
numbers, it was heartening to see so many
people turn out to honour those who
fought for our freedom and remember the
sacrifices they made all those years ago.
It isalso vital that we continue to
recognise the ongoing impacts of service to
this day, both physical and mental, which
are adaily challenge for all who have
served in both the World Wars as well as in
more recent conflicts, up to the present
day. So Iwas pleased to see the services so
wellattended.
Anzac reflections
in Waimakariri
Ihope you all managed to
commemorate Anzac Day this year.
As Mayor Iwas honoured to attend
andspeak at anumber of different
services held around our District to
commemorate those brave young
men and women who sacrificed so
much so that we may enjoy the
freedoms we have today.
At this time, Ithink about how war
has shaped my own family.
Ithink of my great grandfather
who was amember of the North
Canterbury Mounted Rifles, who
fought in the Great War more than
Ithink also of my grandfather,
who left this very District, leaving
behindhis wife and parents.
That young man went on to spend
four years in aprisoner of war camp
in Europeand North Africa.
Ican only imagine the horrors he
must have endured.
I’m sure his very being was only
sustained by the hope that he would
one day return home and be
reunited with his family.
Iknow at the end of the war his
return home to normal life was
difficult, and although in those days
it was very rarely discussed, those
years had taken aterrible toll on his
wellbeing.
My Grandfather was aprominent
anddear figure in my life.
He is someoneIcame to respect
even more, years after his death
It’s important at this time, and
always, to remember our service
men and women —those who have
passed and those who are serving in
current conflicts.
We honour them by showing
tolerance of our differences and
embracing compassion and
understanding.
The public consultation on our
Long term Plan has now closed.
We have received more than 300
submissions to the Plan.
Iwould like to thank everyone
who took the time to make a
submission.
It is really important to us that
everyone has had the opportunity to
have their say.
The next stage in the process is to
go through all of the submissions.
People will also be given the
opportunity to be heard on their
submissions before council meets to
finalise the Long Term Plan in June.
Following this, we will respond to
those who made submissions, and
address the points they raised.
Longterm vacancies starting to be filled in Kaikoura
ByDAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Key appointments have been made, but
there are still opportunities to work in
Kaikōura.
Staff recruitment has been a
headache for the Kaikōura District
Council in recent years, but chief
executive Will Doughty says he has
finally appointed anew building control
manager.
The council has had vacancies in its
building department for more than two
years.
‘‘We are consistently chasingour tail
looking to get some replacements and
we havehad good support from
contractors and other councils in the
building space.
‘‘But it is good to get afulltime role
based here.’’
Mr Doughty said other Canterbury
councils havebeen providing support
with buildinginspections and
consenting over the last two years,
particularly the Hurunui District
Council.
Glen Vaughan will be moving from the
Central Otago District Council to be the
new building control manager in
Kaikōura, starting on July 1.
Anew buildingadministrator and a
new emergency management officer
have also been appointed. Butthe
position of building control officer
remains vacant after more than two
years, while there is also avacancy for a
parttime customerservices officer.
Despite the lack of permanent
buildingstaff based in Kaikōura, the
council has received afavourable
accreditation assessment from
International Accreditation New
Zealand (IANZ).
‘‘It is acredit to the team that we have
no significant noncompliances and
seven general noncompliances,’’ Mr
Doughty said.
If the council addresses the general
noncompliances by July it will be
classified as a‘‘low risk’’ building
control authority, with the next
assessment due in 2026.
