The Cheviot show ‘must go on’
ByROBYN BRISTOW
The push is on to save the Cheviot A&P
show.
To ensure the annual community event
continues, volunteers are urgently
needed to step up, and take the reins on
the executive.
Stalwarts of the A&P association are
urging anyone interested to swing in
behind the local event, and offer up some
of their time, to secure the show’s future.
Lorraine Hansen, the association
secretary, and Jeff Wilkinson, aformer
president who has done two stints in
charge, say the show must go on.
They say it is aspecialcommunity event
that has year’s of history and memories.
However, while there is generally
enough volunteers to lead the various
sections, alack of astructured succession
to fill the executive roles of president,
senior vicepresident and junior vicepresident
is putting the show in jeopardy.
It has been held together by Lorraine,
and ahardyfew who have stepped in to
make sure the show carries on.
It has had arocky few years, being
cancelled in 2022 and 2023 due to Covid,
followed by heavy rain which left the
showgrounds flooded.
Lorraine says there has been no real
handover within the executive, with
‘‘three of us coming in and running blind’’.
‘‘We have tried to get more people to
come on board, but haven’t had any luck
to date,’’ she says.
Emmaand Chris Mulcock were at the
helm this year as presidents, with Phil
and Lynda Dicksontaking the reins the
year before.
But Lorraine says the ad hoc way the
association has been operating for the
past five to six years, can’t continue.
‘‘Ideally we would like to recruit every
year, with the junior vicepresident
moving into the senior vice presidents
role, who would step up to president, as
the president moves on.
‘‘It is abig commitment. But with
succession, they are apart of it for a
number of years before taking the
presidents role,’’she says.
Personally shewould like to see each
president hold the position for two years,
giving those below more time to
experiencethe role.
‘‘We have alot of younger people who
are keen, but they are not quite ready yet.
‘‘Also if we used these younger ones
now, there would be abiggergap created
to fill later,’’she says.
Lorraine says the show clashes with the
Wanaka and Mayfield A&P shows, and
although the association has looked at
moving to another date, it is difficult to
find aweekend without clashes, or it
becomes too early or too late.
‘‘You can’tshift it easily,’’ she says.
Jeff Wilkinson, who chaired a
community meeting on the show last
evening, says the show is ‘‘extremely
important’’ forthe community and
All the fun of the fair ... The annual show provides plenty of entertainment for all ages.
district, and for kids and grand kids.
‘It is very, very important.
‘‘We have all grown up with it. It is well
over 100 years old.
‘‘It will definitely continue.
We just have to get people to stand up
and take on the role of president,’’ he
says.
His own son was ‘‘dead keen’’ to take an
executive position, but not for another
four or five years.
Meanwhile others will have to bridge
gap, and ‘‘some of us old foggies’’ will have
to keep it going meanwhile, he says.
Jeff says it is sad the association is in
the position it is, as it has beautiful
grounds, isagreat wee show, and is a
great community event which attracts
strong entries and agood crowd.
‘‘We don’t want to lose all that,’’ he says.
