This program is designed for recently-assigned evidence technicians and will introduce them
to various evidence collection, identification, and preservation techniques. The impact of
these techniques upon specific criminal investigations will also be discussed. Course topics
include:
- Crime scene management
- Crime scene photography
- Crime scene sketching, diagramming, and animation
- Forensic Laboratory Sections
- Evidence recognition, handling, packaging, and submission
- Trace, tool mark, and firearm evidence
- Footwear/tire track castings
- Latent prints, impression evidence, and AFIS technology
- Biological evidence and D.N.A.
- Search warrants and consent to search
- Gun shot residue tests and results
- Advances in evidence technology
EACH STUDENT SHOULD BE FAMILIAR WITH HIS/HER DEPARTMENT'S 35 MM
CAMERA AND/OR DIGITAL CAMERA AND SHOULD BRING THE FOLLOWING
ITEMS TO CLASS:
- Camera(s)
- Tripod to fit each
- Latent print development kit which includes black powder/magnetic powder, tape, and
backing cards
- Sufficient packaging and personal protection supplies to process a crime scene
This program is certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. It
is not reimbursable by the ILETSB.
This course will be taught by: Officer Michael Kirby, Inverness Police Department.
This program has been designed to provide recently-assigned criminal investigators with the
basic skills needed to perform their duties. This course would also be of value to experienced
patrol officers who have responsibility for conducting follow-up investigations of minor
crimes.
Students will review the role of a criminal investigator during the investigative process and
study practical and effective investigative techniques for personal and property crimes. Basic
principles of effective crime scene management, interviews and interrogations, and
technological investigative tools will be examined in detail.
Additional topics include:
- Search and seizure guidelines
- Substantive law review
- Identification procedures
- Rules of evidence
- Surveillance skills
- Developing information resources
- Involvement in investigative task forces
