This 40 hour, hands-on course has been designed for crime scene investigators, evidence technicians, crime lab personnel, coroners and/or medical examiners who attend crime scenes involving violent death and will provide them with the skills needed to analyze and interpret bloodstain evidence at crime scenes. Topics to be addressed in this program include: - Biological hazards (bloodborne pathogens) - History of bloodstain pattern analysis - Scientific principle as it pertains to bloodstain pattern analysis - Determinations that can be made from bloodstain pattern analysis - Physical attributes of blood - Reactions of liquid blood to the application of force - Effects of targeting surface characteristics - Effect of environmental factors on bloodstain formation and drying times - Characteristics of blood in motion - Mathematical principles related to bloodstain pattern analysis - Identification of the mechanisms that create bloodstains - Chemical testing and enhancements of blood - Preservation, collection, and documentation of bloodstain evidence - Bloodstain experiments **Cancellations for this program must be received by NEMRT 35 days prior to the start of class in order to avoid being billed. This course will be taught by: Instructors with the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy. Officers of all ranks experience stress on the job. Issues regarding shift work, balancing family needs, financial decisions, and operating in the rule-bound, yet highly discretionary, world of policing require officers to develop a skill set that few academies prepare them to use, let alone know about. An experienced law enforcement manager and educator will provide students with a number of ways to better cope with both the "normal" challenges of the job and the acute occurrences which can produce high levels of stress. Personal leadership approaches are emphasized throughout this one day course and officers will have a chance to consider better ways to make decisions, including the following: - Compassion fatigue - How the dynamics of control and trust can change attitudes - Recognizing why officers have special communication needs - Overcoming the damaging effects of "rule bound" and stoic approaches to the job - Recognizing symptoms of stress and how they differ from other jobs - Developing an action plan based on a personal vision beyond the job - Overcoming the "peaks and valleys" of unhealthy career investment - What goes wrong: Alcohol, divorce, isolation, suicide and depression This class will be taught by: Chief Kent Williams, Bartlett Police Department. Winter 2011-12 In-Service Course Catalog This course prepares law enforcement officers for certification and licensing as Illinois Breath Test Operators. Instruction for this course includes: - Detailed discussions on drinking driver enforcement - Pharmacological effects of alcohol - Legal matters relating to drinking driver enforcement (including implied consent and case presentation for court) - Operation and function of breath testing equipment approved for use in Illinois - Laboratory training in the use of breath alcohol testing equipment This course will be taught by Instructors from the Illinois State Police. Students who successfully complete the course and pass the exam will be state certified Breath Alcohol Operators (BAO). This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board. It is not approved for reimbursment. This program has been submitted for funding by the Illinois Department of Transportation through the Police Traffic Services Training Project. If approved, tuition for this program will be waived. NEMRT reserves the right to structure the class in accordance with IDOT grant conditions. **Cancellations for this program must be received by NEMRT 35 days prior to the start of the class in order to avoid being billed. Officers completing this program will be certified as Illinois Breath Analysis Operators by the Illinois State Police. The curriculum was designed by the Illinois State Police and has been approved by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board. Each student will complete a prescribed course of study and perform a series of breath analyses prior to completing a written examination and achieving licensing by the State of Illinois. This program will cover the following topics: - Detecting the drinking driver - Illinois Administrative Rules for Breath Alcohol Testing - Theory of Infrared and Fuel Cell (EC/IR) Units - The Revised Alcohol Influence Report form - Physiology and pharmacology of alcohol - Case law in Illinois affecting DUI enforcement - An examination for certification conducted by the State of Illinois This course has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board.
