This seminar will provide the skills an officer needs to initially respond to cases involving
different forms of child abuse. Five major areas of child abuse (physical, sexual, emotional,
neglect, and sexual exploitation) will be examined by an experienced juvenile officer.
This seminar encourages student participation and emphasizes current investigative
fundamentals and practices. Topics discussed will include:
- Psychodynamics of child abuse
- Neglect abuse injuries
- Identification and reconstruction of physical abuse injuries
- The role of D.C.F.S.
- The role of children's centers and police investigators
- Medical examination and laboratory tests
- Documentation, photographs, interviewing forms
This course will be taught by: Officer Michael Kirby, Inverness Police Department, and by a
representative from SIDS Alliance of Illinois.
With the increasing number of lawsuits filed against police officers each year and the
growing size of court awards, supervisors and patrol officers cannot afford to be unfamiliar
with laws related to liability. This day long course reviews civil liability law affecting Illinois
peace officers and updates participants on recent developments in the realm of civil liability.
Topics to be discussed include:
- Meanings of terms associated with liability suits
- Common liability-producing situations
- Individual officer liability
- Liability of supervisory personnel
- The circumstances for "qualified immunity"
- Circumstances entitling indemnification
- Recommendations to protect officers' assets
This program includes a post-test and test critique and will conclude at 5:00 pm.
