following information has been extracted from a booklet entitled<br />

Education Assistance Scheme 1976, Information for Applicants<br />

which, together with the TEAS application form, are available<br />

student counselling <strong>of</strong>fice, level 2 <strong>of</strong> the business and arts building.<br />

~ssistance under the Tertiary Education Assistance Scheme may include:<br />

(i) payment <strong>of</strong> tuition fees;<br />

(ii) living allowance;<br />

(iii) incidentals allowance;<br />

(iv) allowance for a dependent spouse (husbandlwife) and/or child;<br />

(v) fares allowance.<br />

student must be eligible for living allowance in order to receiveany <strong>of</strong> the other<br />

)) Living allowance: ,<br />

) Ordinary students - students are classed as ordinary unless they meet one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

criteria for independent status. Ordinary students have the means test applied to<br />

parental income and may receive living allowance at one <strong>of</strong> the following rates.<br />

I<br />

(i) At home rate<br />

For students living with parents while attending courses the maximum rate<br />

payable is $1000 per annum. (Reg. 42(2)(b))<br />

I<br />

(ii) Living away from home rate<br />

Where students live away from home to attend courses the maximum rate is<br />

$1600 per annum. The latter rate is payable to students who<br />

- have reached or will turn 21 years <strong>of</strong> age in 1976 and will be living away from<br />

home (Reg. 42(2)(a)(i));<br />

- must live away from home to meet compulsory residence requirements <strong>of</strong> their<br />

course (Reg. 42(2)(a)(iii));<br />

- because <strong>of</strong> distance and time involved in daily travel must live away from home<br />

in order to attend the institution <strong>of</strong> their choice. (Reg. 42(2)(a)(iv));<br />

- are under 21 years <strong>of</strong> age and must live away from home because <strong>of</strong> difficult<br />

conditions at home which would have an adverse effect on their studies.<br />

Students must substantiate their claim by submitting with their application form<br />

a signed statement outlining conditions at home together with corroborative<br />

declarations from persons aware <strong>of</strong> the difficulties. Where appropriate, a floor<br />

plan <strong>of</strong> the home must be included. meg. 42(2)(a)@)).<br />

)Independent students - for independent students, the means test is applied to the<br />

income <strong>of</strong> the student and, where appropriate. -- - hislher wifelhusband.<br />

The maximum rate payable is $1600 p.a. (Reg. 41(2)).<br />

Students may be granted independent status where they<br />

(i) have reached or will turn 25 years <strong>of</strong> age in 1976 (Reg. 30(l)(a));<br />

(ii) are orphans. (A signed statement must be attached to the application form giving<br />

names <strong>of</strong> parents and date <strong>of</strong> decease.) (Reg. 30(l)(c));<br />

(iii) are wards <strong>of</strong> State. (Documentary evidence, eg. a statement from the appropriate<br />

state authority, giving the date on which the applicant became a ward <strong>of</strong> State,<br />

must be attached to the application form.) (Reg. 30(l)(d));<br />
