The library<br />

The central reference and lending library is housed in a modern fivestorey building<br />

with an ultimate capacity for 100,000 volumes, 650 readers and 50 staff. It is<br />

available for the use <strong>of</strong> all full-time and part-time staff and students, and is usually<br />

open from 8.45am to IOpm, Mondays to Thursdays, 8.45am to 8.30pm on Fridays<br />

during semester, and from 9am to 5pm during vacation. It is also open on Saturdays,<br />

public holidays and vacations, according to demand.<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> the material held by the library is available for loan to staff and students<br />

<strong>of</strong> the college, and copying facilities are available at reasonable cost. The major<br />

purpose <strong>of</strong> the library is to supplement and support the formal instruction given<br />

.in all courses <strong>of</strong> the college curriculum and to provide ample opportunity for rec-<br />

reational and general reading.<br />

In 1975, the collection comprised approximately 96,000 volumes including fiction<br />

and bound periodicals. Over 3,000 current periodicals are received, including a wide<br />

range <strong>of</strong> indexes and abstracts. A rapidly growing collection <strong>of</strong> audio-visual<br />

material, including records, audio and video tapes, slides and film is being developea.<br />

Library staff work in close association with teaching staff in develo3ing these resources,<br />

and in helping the students by introducing them to a diversified collection <strong>of</strong><br />

literature and a wide range <strong>of</strong> media on all types <strong>of</strong> subjects. Formal and informal<br />

instruction is given to students on the use <strong>of</strong> catalogues, reference works and<br />

bibliographical aids.<br />

Services and facilities<br />

Archives kept relate mainly to the history <strong>of</strong> the college. Enquiries should be<br />

addressed to the readers' services librarian whose <strong>of</strong>fice is on level 2.<br />

Bags and valuables. A cloakroom is provided for coats, bags, etc., and is kept<br />

under surveillance by closed circuit television. Coin lockers are available in<br />

the cloakroom and should be used for valuables. Bags may be brought into the building<br />

on condition that they are submitted for examination to attendants at the exit before<br />

leaving the building.<br />

Book lockers. A number <strong>of</strong> book lockers are available near the reading areas on each<br />

floor for 2 week periods. Application for keys should be made to the loans counter.<br />

Calculators are available for loan from counter reserve on level 2 in exchange for a current<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> identity card. The calculators may be used anywhere in the library. Power<br />

points are provided on all levels. Loan periods are for one hour but may be extended.<br />

The conference room located onlevel 2 can be closed <strong>of</strong>f by a folding sound-pro<strong>of</strong> partition.<br />

Departments, clubs, societies or persons interested in the use <strong>of</strong> the room for holding<br />

temporary displays are invited to contact the chief librarian. Bookings should be<br />

arranged at the Registrar's <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

Drii vending machines. Coin-operated drink vending machines are located in the<br />

cloakroom on the entrance level for the convenience <strong>of</strong> users <strong>of</strong> the library.<br />

New books are put on display for one week during which time those available for loan<br />

may be reserved for borrowing at the end <strong>of</strong> the display period. Suggestions by students<br />

and staff for additional titles are welcome.<br />

Pamphlets are arranged in classified order in filing cabinets on level 2, alongside the<br />

reference collection. The vertical file, which is adjacent to the pamphlets, contains<br />

ephemeral material, arranged alphabetically by subject.
