An orphan girl. A mysterious horse. And the miracle of Christmas.
The perfect gift book for Christmas: a heartwarming Christmas story à la Charles Dickens about a
miraculous horse.
1850, not far from London. Heavy snowflakes are fluttering down from the night sky covering the frozen
forest floor with a blanket of white glittering crystals. All is quiet but then - suddenly - hasty footsteps
echo through the silence. The heavy breathing leaves no doubt: This is a matter of life and death.
Twelve-year-old Agatha is on the run from her pursuers. She was sick and tired of the violence and the
indignities that she had suffered in the orphanage. But her pursuers have almost caught up with her.
The first one is already trying to grab her with his hands, when something truly unbelievable happens:
Out of nowhere appears a white shimmering horse and carries the girl away. The mysterious horse
takes her to a little farm. Exhausted and shivering from fear, the girl finds a place to sleep in the barn
where she hides between bales of hay. Later, the farmer and his wife discover her there and from this
moment on, they take care of her. After a few days, the farmer and his wife see the girl as a gift from
God because they had always hoped to have children of their own but it was not meant to be. When she
talks to the farmer and his wife, Agatha pretends not to remember who she is and from where she has
come because she is terrified of being returned to the evil orphanage wardens. Yet, Agatha misses her
brother who is still in the orphanage. She decides to save her brother and so it happens: On Christmas
Eve, Agatha gets on the back of the horse and sets out for London to begin her rescue mission.
Karolina Halbach, born in 1962, holds a PhD in Natural Sciences. She and her family live in the vicinity
of Passau, and she loves nature, her family, their two dogs, and three ponies.
