Dictionary and Grammar
Fantasy
894 pages
978-3-404-28524-2
Paperback
The languages invented by J. R. R. Tolkien’s for his imaginary world of
Middle-Earth have become a genuine cult since The Lord of the Rings. The
completely revised and expanded edition incorporates Tolkien's own
substantial "Notes on Words, Phrases and Passages in The Lord of the
Rings, published in 2007, as well as other new source material.
It contains an introduction to Tolkien's art of language creation, a history of
the Elven languages of Middle-earth, and a comparative grammar of Quenya
and Sindarin. The main part consists of bidirectional dictionaries of Elvish words, with full references. There
are also sections on Elvish writing systems, and two new appendices on the languages of Orcs and Dwarves.
There is no other book-length study on the subject at a comparable scope worldwide.
recommendation from
our backlist for all fans
of the forthcoming
Hobbit movie!
In ancient time the Elven lord created seven Rings of Power. Three he gave
to the children of Men, to walk the Middle Realms at will. Two the masters of
Dwarves have in their keeping, who guards the gates to the Underearth.
One the lord of the Elves holds for himself, who rules the Overworld on high.
Of the seventh ring, no one knows. Surrounded by mountains and see,
Elderland is home to the peaceful Ffolk who have been living there for
centuries. But when the shadows of the past awaken, young Kimberon and
his friends must set out for a dangerous journey, which will lead them to the
farthest deeps of the earth and the ends of time - and to a far greater destiny
than any one imagines.
In the tradition of J.R.R. Tolkien, this novel captures the essence of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The book contains the novels THE RINGS OF POWER and THE MASTERS OF TIME.
