But her father marries her to Reinmar’s older brother, Wirtho, who is a violent drunkard. When Wirtho finds out about Arigund and Reinmar’s love for each other, he has his brother brutally murdered. Arigund flees from her husband’s vengeance and falls into the hands of Bohemian robbers who were hired by Wirtho to make the disagreeable wife disappear. However, the band hopes to gain more by extorting ransom from Arigund’s wealthy father. So they keep Arigund alive but at a cost: From now on she is forced to roam around with the band of robbers until her father pays the ransom. The situation heats up when Wirtho’s followers find out where she is so that the kidnappers and Arigund are forced to retreat deeper and deeper into the Bohemian countryside. Finally, Arigund agrees to sing on markets and fairs to distract the listeners while the thieves rob them of their money. Never would she have thought that she would ever be forced to use the gift of her beautiful voice to such an end. Finally, in a marketplace in Prague, she is discovered by the young knight and minstrel Heinrich von Meißen, who is enchanted by her voice and recognizes her immediately: For he was a close friend of her dead love, Reinmar. Heinrich pulls off the almost impossible: He outsmarts the robbers and Arigund is a free woman again. Subsequently, she herself has a successful career as a minstrel singing alongside the famous troubadour Heinrich von Meißen – in the guise of a eunuch. She sings at the royal courts of Prague and Vienna. And Heinrich falls in love with her. But Arigund does not respond to his courtship. If she were to admit her feelings for him, this would be the end of her disguise. As a eunuch, she feels safe… until the day when her husband Wirtho is one of the guests at the royal court recognizing the singer Tassilo immediately as his wife, Arigund. Her chances of telling her side of the story are slim. After all, it is her word against that of her husband. But then Heinrich von Meißen steps in. He is willing to take the field in an ordeal by battle and fight the accuser. In the end, Heinrich defeats Wirtho – not only winning the duel but also Arigund’s heart. Karolina Halbach, born in 1962, holds a PhD in Natural Sciences. She and her family live in the vicinity of Passau, and she loves nature, her family, their two dogs, and three ponies.
