Big country, vast farms, and a great love affair. This moving love story spans decades and
continents.
Blackpool, England. The year is 1918. Nurse Elena Fabrizia and Dr. Lyle Macallister meet in a hospital.
Although the Scotsman and the young Italian woman feel drawn to one another from the first moment, their
parents oppose the match. She stems from a traditional Catholic family; he is a Protestant. Different partners
have long been chosen for both of them. Lyle is meant to marry Millie, his childhood love; Elena, an Italian
from her father's hometown. To escape their fate, Lyle and Elena secretly make plans to abscond. Yet an
additional obstacle places itself in the path of their love. Millie announces in a letter that she has wonderful
news. A short time later, Lyle learns that she is expecting a child from him. In order to fulfill his
responsibilities, Lyle marries the woman he doesn't love. When Elena learns of the wedding she is completely
devastated. Not long thereafter, she, too, discovers that she is expecting a child, but for her and Lyle it is
already too late. To avoid disgracing her family, she bows to her father's wish and marries Aldo, an Italian.
Together they move to Australia where Aldo has bought a farm. But life in Queensland is hard and full of
deprivation, and Elena cannot forget the love of her life. Her son, Marcus, reminds her of Lyle every day.
Lyle's marriage is also anything but happy. After the tragic loss of their son, nothing binds him to Millie
anymore, and he decides to leave his wife – who has taken a lover to console herself. He travels to Australia
as a flying doctor. In the meantime, Elena has resumed working as a nurse. Their paths cross anew, but does
their love have a chance this time?
