Fermented beans for breakfast, a hula dance course in the starlight lounge, and tai chi on the sun deck. For
Dana Phillips, traveling around the world on a Japanese cruise ship becomes a cultural adventure. As the
only German on board, she makes one blunder after the other. First she bungles a proper greeting, then she
forgets to change out of her "toilet" slippers, or she turns her teacup in the wrong direction – an absolute faux
pas. In order to stop constantly attracting negative attention, she decides to learn Japanese customs as
quickly as possible. As she does so, between Tokyo and Tahiti, an entirely new horizon opens up.
Dana Phillips was born in Kronberg im Taunus in 1980. Her academic background is in journalism and
fashion design. She has worked as an independent journalist for various newspapers and online magazines
and lives in the Kreuzberg section of Berlin, where she shares an apartment with Fred, her Jack Russell
terrier. In her leisure time, Dana pursues photography and enjoys cooking.
