Feldkirch 

a town with lots of variety as a holiday destination 

Feldkirch, the mediaeval town in the extreme west of Austria, is a town for connoisseurs. Embedded 

amongst gentle hills, it harmoniously unites the dynamic living of modern times with the magic of history. 

The town presents itself in a fascinatingly versatile manner: entertaining and full of ,,joie de vivre“ at 

the Festival of Jesters or at the bestknown wine festival in the west of Austria, and culturally 

distinguished at the Feldkirch Festival. This charming little town can offer everyone their favourite holiday 

tour be it a stroll amidst untouched natural surroundings, a cycling tour in the nearby Rhine valley or a 

leisurely shopping trip through Feldkirch‘s old town. 

Feldkirch is open-towards its neighbours in Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Germany and Tyrol. It is only a 

few kilometres to Lake Constance, Vaduz or the quaint Swiss canton of AppenzelL Travel a bit farther 

and you come to lnnsbruck, Lucerne or the Bavarian royal castles. Colourful impressions which you will 

enjoy mulling over in Feldkirch, the jewel of Vorarlberg.

Historic old city and surrounding area 

Feldkirch is Vorarlberg’s best-preserved example of a medieval city. The 

whole of the old part of the city is protected as an historic monument in 

order to maintain its rich cultural and historic traditions. 

Schattenburg Castle 

Feldkirch’s most important landmark was buildt in 

1260 to protect the citizens and the town itself. 

Schattenburg was the seat of the Count of 

Montfort. The Montforts became one of the most 

important and powerful aristocratic families of 

the region during the middle ages. After the reins 

of rule were passed on to the Habsburgs in 1390 

important extensions were made to the castle. 

The name „Schattenburg“ comes from the middle 

high German word „Schade“, which means 

„Schutz“ (protection) or „Schirm“ (shield). In 

1825, it was put up for sale, at which time the 

City of Feldkirch acquired it. Today it houses a 

local history museum and a restaurant. 

Town Walls 

1218 marks the first documentation of Feldkirch 

as a city. The town walls were essential to protect 

the medieval town, by the 19th century they were 

no longer required so early in 1826. So, beginning 

in 1826 the great stone wall was dismantled and

used to fill the city moats, upon which the 

present roads were constructed. One can still see 

remains of the walls at the castle Schattenburg, 

at the Katzenturm (Cats Tower) and near the 

Diebsturm (Thief’s Tower). 

Katzenturm (Cats Tower) 

This important part of the city’s fortifications was 

built between 1491 and 1507. The name comes 

from the cannons (cats) that were stored in the 

tower. Today, the largest bell in Vorarlberg hangs 

in the tower and rings every Friday at 3pm. 

Pulverturm, Wasserturm, 

Diebsturm 

(Powder Tower, Water Tower, Thieves Tower) 

On the River Ill there are three towers. In the 

north, the Thief’s Tower; on the road to Liechtenstein, 

the Water Tower; and in the south opposite 

the provincial conservatory the Powder Tower. 

They represent some of the best preserved 

medieval defense structures in Vorarlberg.

Arsenal 

Built in 1436, this gothic building was used to 

store weapons. In 1647, during the 30-Year’s War, 

the Swedes plundered it. Today it is used by 

various clubs as their headquarters. 

Schloss Amberg (Amberg 

Castle) 

Probably built in 1502 by the „Stadtammann“ 

from Feldkirch, it was a favoured spot of the 

Emporer Maximilian. 

Siechenhaus (Infirmary) 

Buildt at the beginning of the 14th century as an 

infirmary for the diseased poor. Today it serves 

as a youth hostel. 

Tosters Castle Ruin and 

St Corneli’s Church 

The castle was built in the middle of the 13th 

century, and was a secondary dwelling held by 

the Montforts. During the Appenzell Wars, in 

1405, it was destroyed. Below the castle is St. 

Corneli’s Church, built in 1178. There is also a 

1000 year old yew tree which is under protection. 

Half-timbered 

construction 

Half-timbered houses located in Rosengasse are 

worth visiting. 

State Conservatory 

Provincial Conservatory built in 1900 as a Jesuit

boarding school. In 1649 and 1856, a number of 

Jesuits came to Feldkirch. 

Feldkirch-Seat of the Diocese 

For centuries Vorarlberg was 

partitioned into the three dioceses 

of Chur, Constance and Augsburg. 

In 1819 Vorarlberg became a part 

of the Brixen Diocese. Feldkich was 

the seat of the General Assistant for 

Vorarlberg. In 1968, it became its 

own Diocese. 

St Nikolaus Cathedral 

The cathedral was built in 1478 by Hans Sturm, a 

stone mason from Vorarlberg. The cathedral 

contains many notable pieces of art. The pulpit is 

a beautiful example of late gothic wroughtiron 

work from about 1520 and was formerly used as 

a tabernacle. In the altar piece of the right-hand 

side chapel is the impressive depiction of the 

Lamentation, painted in 1521 by Wolf Huber from 

Feldkirch. The modern stained glass windows are 

the work of Martin Häusle. 

St John the Babtist‘s 

Church 

The city’s founder, Count Hugo I of Montfort, supported 

the Knights of the Order of the Johanniter. 

In 1218, he built the Johanniter church, opposite 

the „knight’s“ house with hospital and a mill. In

1610 the house fell under the patronage of Weingarten 

Cloister, and in 1695, under the patronage 

of Ottobeuren. The area within the town to which 

the cloister was assigned, was the source of many 

arguments. After it was secularized in 1802/1803, 

it served as a school. In the 20th century it became 

the headquarters of the town’s electricity 

works. 

The Church of Our Lady 

The late gothic single-nave building was 

completed in 1473. Between 1672 until 1678, the 

church was renovated. This church is characterized 

by a shingled, onion tower built above one corner 

of the church. Today the building is utilized by the 

Serbian Orthodox Church. 

Holy Cross Chapel 

The chapel on the far side of the River Ill was an 

endowment of Count Ruldolf V. of Montfort, the 

last of the Montforts. It was built in 1380 in 

memory of his pilgrimmage to the Holy Land. 

Capuchin Monastery 

In 1605 the Capuchin Monastery was buildt 

outside the city walls. The monks were brought 

into the city as a result of the counterreformation. 

The leader of the monastery, Fidelis 

of Sigmaringen, was martyred in 1622 and later 

canonized. His relics are preserved to this day, his 

relics are preserved in the Cloister. 

Dominican Monastery 

Altenstadt 

This women’s cloister was founded in the 13th 

century. The baptistery was consecrated in 1442; 

its frescos date from the 15th century. 

St. Magdalena`s Church 

in Feldkirch 

This church was built at the same time as the 

Siechenhaus at the beginning of the 14th century. 

Beautiful frescas date from around 1320 and 

sculptures are from local artists. 

Feldkirch-An important 

administrative center 

Town Hall 

The Town hall was built between 1490 and 1493 

in the central part of the town because the old 

town hall on the outskirts of the town was threatened 

by floodwaters from the River Ill. Grain 

was storage was on the ground floor and the 

cloth hall was situated on the second. After the 

great fire of 1697 the town hall was rebuilt. The 

council chambers and town archives were housed 

on the first floor. After 1789, no more goods were 

sold from this building. A building and a century 

later its function as a granary came to and end. 

In the 1930s the building was extended and the 

Holy Ghost Hospital was integrated into the town 

hall. The frescos on the front façade show the 

Feldkirch Letter of Freedom. 

Dom St. Nikolaus Liebfrauenkirche

The St. Gallen Administrative 

Building. 

Bailiffs administered possessions in Feldkirch 

belonging to foreign clerics. Michael Gugger of 

Staudach was born in this house from which the 

possessions of the St. Gallen monastery were 

administered. During the 18th century he became 

Abbot of the monastery and was responsible for 

its marvellous restoration. His coat of arms can be 

seen on the façade of the house in Neustadt 8. 

State Court and former 

State Financal Administration 

Art nouveau style built at the beginning of the 

20th century. 

Liechtenstein Palace 

Built after the huge fire of 1697, it was used by 

the governors of Liechtenstein as an administration 

building. Today houses the town‘s archives, 

library, exhibition hall and the tourist office. 

Landeskonservatorium

Feldkirch-a town of 

commerce 

Ganahl Textile Mill 

Vorarlberg boasted a large textile industry in the 

18th century because of its proximity to Switzerland. 

In the Biedermeier era, many new textile 

mills were founded. In 1833 Johann Josef Ganahl 

built his mill on the banks of the River Ill. It was 

the first mechanised textile mill in the monarchy. 

Clessin’sche Stadtapotheke 

(Town Pharmacy) 

The former „Clessin’sche Stadtapotheke“ is the 

oldest pharmacy in Vorarlberg. The pharmacist 

Carl Fidel Clessin was mayor from 1823 until 

1826. Shortly after the French Revolution he 

dedicated a commemorative target to the citizens 

of Feldkirch as a reminder of the town`s long liberal 

tradition of advertising itself. 

Leone House 

House number 12 Schmiedgasse features a 

unique balcony. The artistic iron railing was built 

in 1777 by the business man, Josef Anton Leone. 

Gasthof Lingg 

In the 19th century this building was the property 

of Andreas Griss, whose daughter was married 

to the painter Josef Bucher (1829-1883). The 

remarkable paintings on the front façade of this 

building were added by the Lingg family in 1888.

Ardetzenberg 

The very existence of the vineyard on the slopes 

of the Ardetzenberg demonstrates the importance 

of wine to Feldkirch. The city’s founder, Count 

Hugo I of Montfort, contributed to the extensive 

cultivation of this vineyard. The first Registry of 

Names from Feldkirch is called the „Mistrodel“ 

(„Mist“ is „dung.“) because every citizen had to 

help fertilize these vinyards. Through the 

centuries, the vinyards were a good source of 

income for the citizens of Feldkirch. In 1839, 

Erzherzog Johann (one of the Habsburgs) 

mentioned that the wine of the region had a 

distinctive „Feldkirch“ flavour. 

Feldkirch-Streets and 

Bridges 

The River Ill and its bridges 

In 1537, Feldkirch built a road 

through the „Felsenau“ and a 

bridge over the River Ill out of its 

own funds. It was built to expedite 

the flow of goods from Switzerland 

through the city, and to collect tolls 

for the passage of those goods. In 

the middle of the 19th century, the 

city saw no need for lights because 

the postilions sounded their horns 

at night. „No accident can happen 

unless somebody’s been hitting the 

bottle,“ they said. 

St Michael - Tisis 

Margarethenkapf Union 

Bridge 

Carriages from the nearby villages of Toster, 

Nofels and Bangs could only reach Feldkirch via 

the steep narrow road over Margrethenkapf. Kapf 

Street and its bridge across the River Ill were built 

in 1884/85. In 1925, the neighbouring villages 

were annexed to form Greater Feldkirch. In 1927 

the „Vereinigungsbrücke“ (Unification Bridge) was 

opened. 

Chur Gate 

Because Feldkirch was situated on the River Ill, it 

enjoyed many commercial advantages. The 

transit trade with salt started at the Chur Gate 

and continued over the Holy Cross Bridge into 

Switzerland. For centuries, this bridge was the 

only way to cross the River Ill. 

Holy Cross Bridge 

Since Roman times a bridge has spanned the 

River Ill between Margrethenkapf and Veitskapf. 

The Holy Cross Bridge, mentioned in documents 

as long ago as 1389 and by the 16th century, at 

the latest, was covered by a roof to protect the 

stone arches from frost and humidity and 

weathering in general. In 1844 the bridge was 

renovated and the roof removed. In 1894 the 

over-600 year-old bridge was dismantled and the 

one still standing was build.

Mühletor (Mill Gate) 

Also called „Pig Gate“ because in earlier days the 

traditional „Pig market“ was held here. 

Pedistrian Shopping Area 

Next to historic buildings in the pedistrian shopping 

area, arcades shelter shoppers and charm 

tourists. Entenbachgasse and Rosengasse are 

especially worth visiting.

Hiking tips 

The Castle Tour 

From the Schellenberg Ruins in Liechtenstein 

across the unmanned border to the ruins of 

Tosters Castle with a break in St. Corneli: You 

arrive by bus in the village of Schellenberg in 

Liechtenstein. From there, you follow a path to 

the Schellenberg Ruin. After hiking along the 

edge of the mountain and crossing the unmanned 

border into Austria, you will reach the ruins of 

Tosters Castle. After a break at St. Corneli Church, 

where there is a 1,000 year-old Yew tree grows, 

you will find the bus waiting for you at the foot 

of the mountain. 

Round trip to Maria Grün 

via the Tibetan Cloister 

with its “Peace Stupa” 

Tibetan monks have been living on the former 

dairy farm of the Gassner-Getzner family for 

several years. A little higher up behind the 

cloister there is free access to the “Peace Stupa” 

The walk starts in the Liechtensteinerstrasse, continues 

up Duxgasse to the Letzehof (Buddhist 

Cloister) and from there to Maria Grün and back 

down into the town.

Hiking through the nature 

reserve of “Matschels” 

The bus takes you to Bangs, the westernmost 

resort in Austria. The walk leads you through 

woods and meadows which are especially beautiful 

in the spring when irises are in bloom. A longer 

variation of this hike may be done by bicycle. 

Ardetzenberg (639m) 

Walk along Churerstrasse then Ardetzenbergstrasse 

to Weinbergstrasse from where you take 

a forest path up to the old water reservoir (Wasserschloss). 

On the way there are beautiful views 

of the Rhine Valley, the surrounding mountains 

(Three Sisters ,Rätikon and Hoher Kasten) and the 

town. From the reservoir follow the signposted 

nature trail. The return route is either directly to 

the town or via the villages of Gisingen or Levis. 

Takes about 1 hours. 

Stadtschrofen (612m) 

Walk up Liechtensteinerstrasse, turn left up Duxgasse 

to the Letzehof-where the beautiful landscape 

begins on a hill slope called the „Letze“ and 

continues up to „Stadtsschrofen“ with its breathtaking 

views from the steep cliffs. Walk down 

through the woods the steep way or down the 

forest path and road to the riding path to the 

Gasthof „Maria-Grün,“ which also sports splendid 

views. Continue past the now dried up Maria Grün 

lake to Fellengatter, then finally to the Felsenau 

swimming pool and to the bridge over the River 

Ill. Takes about 2 hours. 

High and Low Känzele 

(640m) 

Starting point Feldkirch-Montfort house: 

Walk up Burggasse , past the castle and along 

Göfisstrasse as far as the first crossroad. Take the 

left turn downhill-Haldenweg- to the Elend Bild 

chapel where the road rises steeply again. Take 

the little path on the left through the woods 

which leads to the Amberg castle and after a few 

metres you will reach a crossroad. Go up the 

steps on the right, cross the Göfis road and follow 

the path to the Hohen and Niederen Känzele. 

(viewpoints) Go past Göfis –Stein (possibility to 

stop at an inn) Take the chance to visit the glacial 

pot-hole here. Return to Feldkirch via the 

Felsenau gorge. Duration: 1,5 to 2 hours. 

Starting point Feldkirch railway station: 

Our hike starts in Haldenweg which can be 

reached by going under the railway line via the 

subway nearest the town, close to the car park. 

Walk up Haldenweg and after a few minutes you 

will reach the “Elend Bild” chapel. From this 

point, we follow the same route as previously 

described above.

Schellenberg (730m) 

Walk up the castle path (Feldkirch-Tosters) to the 

ruins of Tosters Castle. Take the main path back 

to St. Corneli Church with its 1000 yearold Yew 

tree. Take the Rüttele path to Schellenbergstrasse 

and continue on to Hubstrasse; take Werdenbergstrasse 

to the old St. Michael’s Church in Tisis, 

then via Feldweg to Rheinbergerstrasse. Turn left 

and continue down Hohlegasse to the Kapf and 

over the large bridge on the left into the town 

centre of the city. Takes about 3 hours.

Cycling 

Feldkirch is a town at the 

crossroads of three countries, 

Austria,Switzerland and 

Liechtenstein. Connecting these 

countries there are several cycle 

paths in the Rhine Valley and the 

Walgau Valley which enable keen 

cyclists and family groups to 

explore the surroundings. Feldkirch 

is also an excellent starting point 

for mountain biking (Älpele, Gamp, 

Alpwegkopf,Hohe Kugel, Hoher 

Kasten, Pfälzer Hütte etc.) The 

mountain ranges east and west of 

the Rhine valley and the Walgau 

can be reached via short, flat 

approaches on the cycle paths 

(10- 20 km.) Take advantage of the 

regional railway service whereby 

bikes can be transported without a 

problem, and you will be able to go 

on extensive mountain bike trips in 

the high alpine areas of Montafon 

and Arlberg. Cycling map available

Rock climbing wall 

The cliff with the star sign on it was used at the 

beginning of the 80‘s as a rock climbing practice 

wall. 36 routes have been set up with a maximum 

height of 25m.and complying with modern 

safety standards. The bolts are bolted in such a 

way that even children can climb up first without 

danger of falling. Directions: A14 Walgau motorway-exit 

Frastanz- L190 towards Feldkirch- turn 

left immediately in front of the Schattenburg tunnel 

(parking in the Ganahlareal and Illpark underground 

car park) 3 min. on foot to the cliffs situated 

in the south-west. Climbing also possible in 

winter on sunny days.(11am-4pm approx.) Climbing 

guide available at the tourist office.

The construction history of Feldkirch 

The centre of the town of Feldkirch is a medieval settlement that was 

founded and laid out by the Counts of Montfort at the foot of the Schattenburg. 

Feldkirch is first mentioned in a document in 1218. 

The main axis of the medieval town consists of 

the market square (Marktplatz) and the former 

house of the Order of St John of Jerusalem 

(Johanniter-Ordenshaus) with St John’s Church. In 

the 14th century, the town was expanded 

southwards towards the river Ill, the new 

“suburb” (Vorstadt) incorporating the site of what 

is now Montfortgasse as far as the gate Churer 

Tor. There, in 1379, the first town hall was built. 

As a junction for trade and traffic routes, the 

town possessed great geopolitical significance for 

the Habsburgs who had ambitions regarding 

Switzerland; but there were also multifarious 

links with the regions of Graubünden and northern 

Italy. Notable changes were made about 

1500 during the reign of the powerful Emperor 

and King Maximillian I, when the fortificationswalls, 

towers and gates-were extended and the 

town attained the appearance that it still today 

apart from losses in the 19th and 20th century. 

The town with its area of 1.30 km remained very 

small for a long time. It bordered directly on 

purely agricultural communities like Göfis, Tisis, 

Tosters and the larger Altenstadt. Since the citizens 

of Feldkirch had capital and were also agri-

culturalists, they bought a large amount of land 

in neighbouring communities-fields, meadows, 

pasture and forestland-and this became the basis 

for urban expansion in the 19th century. Just one 

hundred years ago the slopes of Ardetzenberg 

and Blasenberg still bore extensive and intensively 

cultivated vineyards. The early industrial 

phase began to emerge around 1800 shortly 

after the Napoleonic Wars, which had not left 

Feldkirch unscathed. Indeed, the wars had 

demonstrated all too clearly how useless the 

medieval fortifications were. Largescale new 

industrial sites demanded land and better transport 

infrastructure. As a result, in the first third of 

the 19th century a major part of the city walls 

was demolished and the defensive ditches were 

replaced by wide streets, lined with new buildings. 

Industries such as weaving, spinning and 

metal processing spread in the medieval artisanal 

area along the Mühlekanal, thus extending from 

Felsenau, over Leonhardsplatz and into the Vorstadt. 

Change was ushered in by the construction 

of the Vorarlberg railway (1871) and its extension, 

the Arlberg railway, which meant that from 

1884 the municipality was connected with the

est of the empire. At this time two branches of 

local industry wich had existend since the Middle 

Ages, lost their significance-the grain trade and 

the salt trade. The population’s outward expansion 

became more and more evident in the second 

half of the 19th century. Industrialisation and a 

building boom led to a rapid increase of the 

number of the town’s inhabitants. In this period 

the industrialists’ villas were built along the 

Bahnhofstraße. The events of 1910 were decisive 

for the further development of Feldkirch. In this 

year the town suffered catastrophic flooding from 

the river Ill, which necessitated substantial urban 

alterations: embankments were built along the 

Ill, the Kapfschlucht was enlarged and the municipal 

sewage system was regulated. These measures 

brought the town such prestige that the 

surrounding communities were incorporated with 

Feldkirch in 1925, giving the town an area of 

34.34 km . The 1950s and 1960s saw a great 

deal of residential construction, and in the 1970s 

the town acquired its distinctive road network 

with the Hirschgraben road and Walgaustraße in 

the Felsenau gorge.

Buddhist Monastery „Letzehof“ 

In 1982 the Tibetan spiritual teacher Geshe Rabten Rinpotsche founded 

a Buddhist monastery on the former estate of the factory-owner Getzner 

family. The monastery is managed by Buddhist monks from Tibet, Mongolia 

and Europe and can be visited at any time. The prayer and meditation room 

as well as a peace stupa in the grounds of the monastery are open to all. 

There are regular public seminars and evening talks on meditation. Guided 

tours are also offered. The Letzehof can also be reached on foot from the 

town via Liechtensteiner Straße and Duxgasse.

Vinobile 

At the “Vinobile” in April, 100 vintners from wine 

regions all over Austria present their wines. From 

Friday until Sunday, over 1000 white, red and 

rosé wines can be tasted at the Feldkirch Montfort 

House. Vintners are available at every booth 

to provide tasting tips and personal advice. Additionally, 

each year a relatively unknown wine 

region from outside Austria is introduced at the 

“Vinobile.“

Feldkircher Montfortspektakel 

This market, at the foot of Schattenburg, will take 

you back to the time when the area was ruled by 

the Count of Montfort. Every year, about 20.000 

visitors take this journey back through time to the 

middle ages. People live, eat, drink, sing and 

celebrate as they did 700 years ago, at booths 

constructed of linen, wood and straw. Merchants 

sell their wares. Knights fight for the honor of fair 

ladies while others entertain the crowds in the 

manner of the distant past.

In early summer each year (May/June) Feldkirch 

stands in the limelight for international music. 

The festival is under the direction of the world 

famous, successful director and stage designer, 

Philippe Arnaud. who presents impressive liaisons

Feldkirch Wine Festival 

The Feldkirch Wine Festival hosts about 20.000 

„friends of the vine“ each year at the beginning 

of July. For over 40 years, this Folk Fest has 

resonated with the sounds of music groups from 

the Market Street. Each year, tens of thousands 

of glasses of wine and refreshing wine-based 

beverages flow at the five „wine islands.“ Every

Austria. The trend of late has been toward 

quality, without sacrificing its cosiness. More and 

more wines are poured directly from the bottle,

Feldkirch Juggler Festival 

Nearly 100 street artists from all over the world 

meet in the old part of Feldkirch every July to 

perform as in bygone days. Clowns, jugglers, 

mimics, and comedians compete in many 

languages for the favours of the audience. Every 

little street, street corner, and arcade hosts these 

multinational artists for two days. The organizers 

work tirelessly to ensure the quality of the 

entertainers: No electronic support is allowed, 

and the performers must move from place to 

place so the spectators won’t miss any of the 

highlights. 


ArtDesign Feldkirch 

In November each year the international Art Fair 

takes place. The emphasis is on the latest designs 

in furniture, fashion, jewellery and innovative 

designs of the 20th and 21st centuries. The fair 

developed in its own right after being part of the 

Art and Antiques Fair which started in 1981 and 

is the first of its kind in the Lake Constance area.

Feldkirch „Blosengel“ 

Market 

A week before Advent, the inner city falls under 

the spell of the „Blosengel Market.“ Over 50 

booths offer a variety of original gifts and 

goodies, such as hot spiced wine or cider, and

Vorarlberg apple specialty in batter. Friends meet 

to enjoy the companionship, the food, the spiced

Feldkirch Wildlife Park 

Feldkirch Wildlife Park was founded in 1963 as a non-profit-making 

association. Today around 160 animals from 18 different native species have 

their home in this spacious wildlife park. 

Living in packs, hibernation and other animal habits 

Why do wolves live in packs? Where does an eagle build its aerie? What do 

groundhogs do in winter? What colour is an arctic hare in summer? Anyone 

looking for answers to these and thousands of other questions is warmly 

invited to accompany the keepers during feeding or to take part in a guided 

tour. 

Nature trail 

For people with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge there is also a nature 

trail in the Feldkirch recreational forest along with the wildlife park. This 

has over 70 signs packed with all sorts of information about the forest – 

plants and animals, nature‘s cycles, climate and soil conditions. It is open all 

year round and is free of charge.

Schattenburg Museum 

Today‘s landmark was built around 1260 to protect the town and its 

citizens. The castle was the ancestral seat of the Earls of Montfort, who rose 

to power in the Middle Ages in the region covered by today‘s Vorarlberg. 

When command over Feldkirch passed to the House of Habsburg in 1390 

important extensions were made by the Habsburgian Reeves. Its name 

„Schattenburg“ is derived from the Middle High German word „schade“ 

which means „protection, shield“. When the castle was surrendered for 

demolition in 1825, the town purchased the complex. Today it houses the 

Schattenburg Museum and a restaurant.
